The most formative period, and that in which our characters are most determined, has been the one just passed. Our high school years marked the transition in our lives from adoles- cence to maturity. Our teachers have worked incessantly and understandingly to help us set up our goals in life, to clarify our ideals and to understand our- selves. Under their tutelage we have en- deavored to study mankind past - the history and heritage, in an effort to ob- tain an understanding of mankind present and ourselves. This year, as in the past, school spirit ran high as our football, basketball, and wrestling teams went on to victory. The tennis, track, cross-country, rifle, and bowling teams made the name of Calhoun High School respected in the field of inter- scholastic sports. The girls, teams too played their part in promoting sportsman- ship and school spirit. The student body was behind the teams throughout the year, and the bleachers were packed at all the major games. The school backed the teams, and they in turn proved themselves, as shown . . . Varsity In TOP ROW - M. Walters, L. Ruzyla, M. Levy, Debonis, G. Vaughn, D. Dye, N. Megahan, L. Garter, W. Taylor, R. Early in the year eleven members of the choir sang with the All State Sectional Choir, and a few weeks later Carol Flynn and Joe Pappalardo were privileged to be able to sing with the All State Choir. In the spring the main events were Festi- val Competition and the production of the Rogers and Hammerstein hit musical South Pacific. Thoughout the year Mr. S. Talbot Thayer worked with the group to obtain a Fine musical organization which won praise wherever it performed. Ist ROW - M. Metzger, P. Padow, S. Victor, C. Flynn, E. DeVito, S. Boritz, B'. H 1 , , H57 In the conference room Career Da Everybodyis interested Inspecting the exhibit On December 10, 1959, B'nai B,rith,s Integrity and Fidelity Lodges and Chapters sponsored a Career Day Conference at Cal- houn. The keynote address, delivered by Dr. William Nelligan, Dean of the School of Education of St. John's University, preceded the division of the senior and junior classes into forty-four groups. These went into corresponding conference rooms where experts in various Helds ranging from accounting to teaching informed the students of opportunities in them, and of the duties of and quali- fications for each. Thanks to the efforts of these people the students of Calhoun High were able to obtain a deep insight into the prob- lems and benefits of the careers of their choices. 119 if-' My-, 5 M-'inns 991101 H I H, 1 -F. The Year We This was the year of the trips. In the wake of Humphrey, Harriman, and Nixon, who had made news-making visits to Russia last year, followed Ei- senhower through Latin America, Rus- sia, and Asia. Khrushchev came here, as did Castro, Adenauer, and Ben Gur- ion. Adlai Stevenson went through Latin America while both DeGaulle and Macmillan paid visits to the Afri- can trouble spots. Nasser made one of his pilgrimages to Moscow, and Queen Elizabeth had a chat with President Eisenhower as they opened the St. Law- rence Seaway. Prince Philip is due here shortly to open the British exhibition in the Coliseum. While sit-down strikes were being held at chain store counters in both the North and the South, while the longest steel strike in our country's history was being fought, while Castro was stirring anti-U.S. sentiment in Cuba, and the Senate was Hlibustering over a new civil rights bill, a new perfected polio vaccine was going through its testing Graduated . program to save thousands of lives. These were the times of the quiz-show scandals, of the payola scandals, and the obvious cleaning-up of government malpractices by Senate and House in- vestigating committees, as election time rolled around the corner. Princess Margaret settled down with her Anthony Armstrong-Jones, and Queen Elizabeth had a baby boy. Two planets were put into orbit by the U.S. and U.S.S.R. Hit shows were Take Me Along, Fiorello, Tenth Man, Miracle Worker, along with the old standbys My Fair Lady, and Music Man. It was the heyday of Bobby Darin and the Kingston Trio, Elvis was discharged. As the world moved toward the '6O,s, the first graduating class of Calhoun completed its final year of high school. They have much to remember and much to look forward to - for they are entering a new way of life and a new decade, M2256 ff ' These were the hit shows.
