Mr. Carter has influenced many stu- dents with his confidence in people, his love of life, and his power of leadership. In the few years he stay- e d at Central, he not only donated much of his time to planning ex- perimental teaching techniques, but he also found time to help with _many extracurricular activities. His willingness to advise clubs and at- tend athletic games was an inspira- tion to many people who felt the tug _of apathy or boredom. He stood by “the students as an advisor, coun- selor, and more importantly ...a friend. Not To Mention Christmas Dance 33 Boe GG To ‘eRe ... 10 Give Every Student AChance To The work of Central’s organizations continued throughout the _ year, despite a growing trend of indif- ferences on the part of many sstu- dents. The leaders of service clubs faced the ageold problem of orga- nizing worthwhile projects while - their members would support. They managed to find conditions at Central and in the community | which needed improving and set to work. _ The clubs organized to promote a _ specific interest faced a more com- _ plex situation. These clubs attracted students who desired an opportun- ity to cultivate their own interests _ but who often rejected service to the school through menial tasks. Those Clubs unable to initiate programs for club meetings often attempted token school service projects and _ met with little response. The most enthusiastically supported clubs were the ones that primarily de- voted themselves to using the com- mon bonds of the members to fulfill _ the club’s purpose. _ Students were beginning to see the possibilities at Central for develop- _ing a wider variety of activities. But somewhere in the rolls of red tape, the actual development of certain cultural activities did not take place. _ The ultimate goal of the school’s fj extra-curricular program, to give every student a chance to develop his own individual interest, was _perhaps seen by a few but was not reached. © : Develop His Own Individual Far Upper Left: Marcia Prestwood, President of the Students for Environmental Action, sees the Biology Pond as a victim for eco- logical improvement. Despite the sponsoring of several student activities, Student Council leaders were dis- turbed by the lack of initiative on the part of the representatives in setting up Council projects. Interests The Mathematics Department at Central boasts a great variety of course offerings. Students choose their math courses to meet their specific needs. Imagine the monotony and bore- dom if everyone in the entire world was just alike. The world is people. For centuries the origins and lives of people have captivated individ- uals. Students at Central now have the opportunity to learn Social Studies through mini-courses. By this process, students study in areas where their specific interests lie. ve Language; expressions in words. The Language Department encom- passes many phases of learning ranging from the construction of simple sentences in a foreign lan- guage to the discovery of the mean- ing of a literary work. Students learn to convey their thoughts not only through writing but also through sppech. Studying waht others have expressed in words and learning to express oneself in words are the basis for language study. Above: In order to remain aware of classroom procedure. The aroma of burnt roast beef drifts into the atmosphere so strongly that it knocks the _ Sanford bird population out of the sky. Central’s students become immune to such tor- ture. [= — - = ad ad -— s site Central’s Pride and Joy, The Vocational Department has been the subject of much dis- cussion during its growth in the past few years. Although some educators see this type of learn- ing as a movement toward rele- vancy, others fear that its direc- tion may replace the three R’s rather than being an addition to them. At Central, the facilities and variety within the vocational curriculum make it an experi- ment with nationwide impor- tance, but for students here the program simply offers the oppor- tunity to obtain training for basic occupational skills and to learn the ropes of business and _ in- dustry through work on the job and in the classroom. (Freshman The Physical Education De- partment at Sanford Central offers students the opportun- ity to express themselves through physical endeavors. However, at the present time participation is limited to freshmen except for a small group of upperclassmen who take Advanced P.E. In the spring, the Student Council passed a bill requesting the establishment of a four year physical education program at Central. Perhaps this will be done. Students taking P.E. not only participate in Physical activities, but also learn health | care and personal hygiene. 8 ate ney wie Right: Freshman physical education students prepare for a _ basketball game. Below: Assistant Principal, Carson Oldham, observes the beginning of another school day filled with new problems, new plea- sures, and new experiences. The duties of the city school administrators and the school board are varied and took on a slightly different look this year. The Superintendent, Mr. Brinson, along with a school board member, Dr. Covington, joined many other educators from our country and took a trip to Russia to observe the educational system. They saw new ways of teaching and brought back many ideas to better our school systems. Mr. Seaman, Assistant Super- intendent, took on the extra duty of teaching Mrs. Vale’s English classes for one week. During this time, he not only got an inside view of the school and its problems but also got a chance to brush up on his English. Dr. James The school, as part of the Sanford community, cannot completely separate itself from the world of business and industry. Money becomes an im- portant factor in most phases of school life— from the English Department to the senior class picnic. Time and again, the community is asked to buy from, sell to at discount prices, and donate to various school functions, all of which spend valuable time asking for money here and there. The complexity of the economic situation leaves us all with a variety of feelings from which come our expressions: friendly bickering over the high prices; a gift of money given perhaps cheerfully or begrudgingly, but with the ever-more present realization of a loss in profits; a gift received with perhaps gratitude or disappointment but with a growing sense of guilt over begging for the sake of education with nothing to give in return except the promise of a new generation. Far Top Left: The Christmas Uayade, alae cluded many of Central's students. Itwas supported by the businesses of Sanford. Far Bottom Left: Fire brings destruction to a well-known business here but the San- ford Fire Department quickly rushes to keep the fire from spreading to other places. Left Middle: In order to meet San- ford’s expanding needs, roads have to be. _ widened and improved. Left: The hospital serves a vital function of our. community. coe Below: Much fun and excitement were Hig brought to the SOON with LEG Coun- ae ty’s Fair.
