Let's see what these alumna have contributed to the world. As we open the memory book of these ten years the first face that catches our eyes is that of jane Cragan. CLASS HISTCDRY The echo of the school'marm's bell rings in our ears as we, the Seniors of 1949, remember our first day at dear ole Sanford High. In the year of 1945 we, as Sub-Freshmen, were beginning the best years of our lives, however, at the time we did not realize it. To begin our schooling, we had as our leader, Mr. E. R. Smith who backed our class officers. President, Vernon lsenhour, Vice-President, Bobby Hartnessq Secretary, Betty Harton. By the time 1946 rolled around we Freshmen felt that we were now a part of S. H. S. We chose as our President, Vernon lsenhourg Vice-President, Gene Iohnsong Secretary, Bobby Hartnessg Treasurer, Bill Gilliam. This year we had as our leader, Mr. M. A. McLeod whom we shall always cherish as our understanding friend. ln the year of 1947 many of us had the honor of being chosen waiters and waitresses of the Sophomore Class for the junior-Senior Banquet. We chose as officers to lead us through this year: President, Billy Miller, Vice-President, Gene johnson, Secretary'Treasurer, Billy johnson. Again we began our year with a new leader, Mr. E. P. Pearce, who served us until the end of our high school career. Before we knew it the year of 1948 had come and we were Juniors. We enjoyed the junior- Senior Prom which we had planned in Plantation style for the Seniors. Our Junior play, 'iliminy Cricket, was a big success. Our leaders were: President, Vernon lsenhour, Vice-President, Gene johnson, Secretary-Treasurer, joe Sprott. The Seniors chose from our class as their Junior Marshals: Vernon lsenhour and Sally Cadell, Chiefsg Grady Pardue, Robert Holco b, Curtis Womack, Marlene Ledwell, Marie Avery, and Sarah Pruett. VVe had the honor o choosing the Student Council President from our class for the year of 1948-49. The candidates were Buddy Heins, Mary Dawson, and Grady Pai-due. Mary Dawson won the election and she was the first girl in S. H. S. history to become President of the Student Council. It is now 1949 and we, as Seniors, are bidding farewell to the wonderful times which we have had. We chose as our President, Duncan Reddittg Vice-President, Grady Pardueg Secretary, jackie Johnson, and Treasurer, Sally Caddell. Our Senior play and junior-Senior Prom were big successes. The memories of S. H. S. will linger with us always and we wish all who come to take our places the very best in everything. . Paced by the accurate shooting of Mary Lou Jones, who scored 27 points in one game this year, that against Chapel Hill, the 1949 edition of the Yellow Jacket Cirlsn can be ranked as one of the best teams in this section of North Carolina. The guards, also, have shown remarkable improvement since the beginning of the season. Miss Ernestine Vinson is carrying on in a very capable manner as coach since Mrs. Horton found it necessary to give up her school work, and coaching of the girls team for the past two years. . The boys have a wonderfully line spirit and work together in such a way that a great deal of improvement will be easily noticed before the end of the season. As this is written in mid-season, it looks as if we will win about one-third of our games. With a strong junior Varsity that will play about a ten-game schedule, the boys who move up to the Varsity next year will in all probability add much needed strength to our team for 1950.
