THE CLASS PROPHECY VOL. 19 THEOLOGIST TO SPEAK A six months' tour in Europe and the Or- ient has convinced Theodore George, national president of the American Theological Society, that the modern world may crumble into de- generacy and futility with even greater trag- edy and chaos than did Greece or Rome. Mr. George will describe some of his exper- iences as well as his reactions to his tour of Europe in two public lectures in the Clover Room of the Bellevue-Stratford tomorrow night and VVednesday. ANDERSON FOR CONGRESS Arthur Anderson, well known labor leader, announced himself as a candidate for the Re- publican nomination for Congress in this dis- trict. Mr. Anderson served as President of the American Federation of Labor for a number of years, and has recently been elected Judge of Clearheld County. He expects a lot of sup- port from the people of this district, because he is the only Republican candidate in the field thus far. AUGUST MILLER APPOINTED CAPTAIN OF S. S. PENNSYLVANIA August Miller, former DuBois boy. has just been appointed Captain of the S. S. Pennsyl- vania, by the Secretary of the Navy. Captain Miller graduated from Sandy High School in 1926, and from Indiana Normal in 1928. He then ,taught school until his recent appointment to Annapolis. After graduating from that place he was placed on the Penn- sylvania as an ensign. He has been receiving high honors since that time. DuBois should be very proud to have such a man as Mr. Mil- ler. November 22, 1940 gg g NFO.,26 COLUMBUS SPERIE CHOSEN AS COACH AT HARVARD UNIVERSITY Cambridge, Mass., Nov. 21.-C0luI1ll7uS Sperie, athletic coach of Penn State College, has recently been named Basketball coach of Harvard University. Mr. Sperie was one of the star players of the Harvard team years ago. Since that time he has been Penn's fa,- vorite coach. Sperie takes a great interest in athletics and Harvard is lucky to get such a coach as he. It is hoped that Basketball in Harvard will be more successful this year than it was last. Mr. Sperie will start his team practicing as soon as he lands in Cambridge. MISS SYLVIA HOOVER LEAVES FOR CHINA New York, Nov. 22, 1940.-Miss Hoover, the well known missionary, left this morning on the S. S. Olympic for China, where she will take up her old position of converting the heathen. She has been doing excellent work in China for a number of years. She has en- countered some daring experiences while on her travels, and many times has almost lost her life. She has converted more than two thousand heathen during her stay in China, and expects that many converts this year. Her mother and her friend are accompanying her. WALTER MORGAN APPOINTED CAPTAIN OF NATIONAL GUARD Harrisburg, Pa., Nov. 22, 1940.-Walter Morgan has just been appointed Captain of the First Battalion, 108th Artillery, Pennsyl- vania National Guard, it was announced here today by the Governor of Pennsylvania. Mr. Morgan is from DuBois and he has served the National Army for a number of years. He takes his new post April the Hrst. FORMER DUBOIS GIRL ENTERS ZIEGFIELD FOLLIES New York, Nov. 22, 1940.-Miss Rachel Mark, a graduate of Sandy High School, has signed a ten thousand dollar yearly contract with the Ziegfield Follies Company. Her stage name will be Bebe Marx. During her younger days she was in the movie world, where she took the leading role in a number of pictures. Some of Miss Mark's leading pictures are, Cinderella, Cross Currents, and Fairy- landf' She is considered one of the best sing- ers and dancers in the Follies. It is sure she will make a decided hit with all theatre goers. FAMOUS NOVELIST RETURNS HOME New York, Nov. 21, 1940.-Miss Mable Long, one of AIIICFICHYS greatest woman nov- elists, has at last come back to the United States. She arrived on the S. S. They had loads of good eats, and a very g'ood time. She carried a large bouquet of lilies of the valley. Mrs. Bolton is a gradu- ate of the Sandy High School, and is at pres- ent a valuable teacher in the DuBois High School. The happy couple will make their future home in Youngstown, Ohio, where the groom holds a responsible position. Miss Bundy was born in Sabula, where nine o'clock is considered the middle of the night, and she has never been able to get over it. She declares staying up late destroys beauty. LILITH BEST WINS HIGH PRAISE AS ACTRESS Shares Applause with Miss Leach in Role of Lady Macbeth. Chicago, Nov. 22, 1940.-wMiss Lilith Best, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Best, of DuBois, Pa., won high honors as an actress in Chicago last evening when she played the part of Lady Macbeth in Shakespeare's drama, Macbeth Today she found herself as an actress whose performance was eloquent, magnetic and beau- tiful. Miss Melva Leach, who is both eloquent and beautiful, portrayed Lady Macduff. She held the audience spellbound with her excep- tional acting. This is Miss Best's and Miss Leach's first appearance in Chicago, and the critics from this city claim they are excelled by no other actress. VERNON DIXON PAYS A VISIT TO THIS CITY Tells Rotarians of His Success in Cattle Rais- ing in the West. Mr. Dixon, from Montana, gave a very in- teresting talk on Cattle Raising, last evening before a large number of Rotarians. Mr. Dixon left this city a number of years ago for the west. He purchased a ranch in Montana which has been a decided success. He ex- plained that Cattle Raising is a very remun- erative job, and a very good way for develop- ing the west. POPULAR YOUNG MINISTER ELECTED PRESIDENT OF MEADVILLE COLLEGE Meadville, Nov. 22, 1940.-At a meeting of Allegheny College trustees in Pittsburgh to- day, Dr. john Cunningham, of Boston Uni- versity, was elected president of Allegheny College. He will come to Meadville early in January to take up his new work. Dr. Cunningham was born in DuBois, Pa. Upon graduating from Sandy High School, he went to Boston University, where he obtained the degree of D. D. and L. L. D. He was or- dained a Methodist minister in 1935, and comes to Allegheny very highly recommended. He is married and will bring his family with him. CHATFIELD RETURNS Philadelphia Orchestra Leader Back in Phila- delphia with Bride. Philadelphia, Nov. 22, 1940.-Prof. Chat- field has returned to his home on West Mer- maid Lane, Chestnut Hill, after spending the past several months in Europe. He and his wife, the former Miss Mildred Brookes, have been on their wedding trip since their marri- age in New York, October 14. Mrs. Chatfield before her marriage was a successful stenog- rapher for the Secretary of the Treasury in lfVashington. PRIZE TO PROFESSOR Dr. Brown Gets 350,000 for Contribution to Science. Baltimore, Nov. 22, 1940.-The Research Corporation of America awarded its first an- nual prize of 350,000 to Dr. Brown, professor of Chemistry at johns Hopkins University. Dr. Brown's greatest contribution to the world was the changing of mercury to gold. His experiment is one unknown to all scientists. Dr. Brown will not reveal his secrets until his death. SANDY HIGH HAS FIRST WOMAN PRINCIPALQ FORMER PUPIL OF SANDY HIGH SCHOOL DuBois, Nov. 22, 1940.-For the first time Sandy Township High School will have a lady Professor at its head. She is Miss Edna Lind- say and a former pupil of S. H. S. She grad- uated with the class of nineteen twenty-six and from there Went to Allegheny College, where she received her degree. Since then she has distinguishd herself as a teacher in South High School, Youngstown, Ohio, and has also taught in Sandy for five years. This year the board of directors decided to make Miss Lindsay their first woman Principal. We know she will be a success at this work, and Sandy Township is proud of her. RISKS LIFE SAVING CHILD Ellis Barker, motorman of an elevated car, climbed under one of the trains at the Pitts- burgh freight yards yesterday, and rescued a small child. A passenger declares he saw the child run in front of the west-bound train into the path of the one going east. Mr. Barker brought his car to a complete stop, climbed under a standing train and saved the child from being killed by the train going east. Mr. Barker was given a medal for his heroic deed, also a purse of 35,000 by the child's father.
