GIRLS' SPORTS Basketball season for 1953-54 opened, not with a bang, but with a big question mark in the minds of all concerned. The team was minus the service of high scorer Omie Ree James also Patsy Handy, Elsie Belton, Margaret Gibson, Angie Amos and Gracie Moore. Those returning from Mr. Johnson's last year's team were Temple Tilley, Wifmie Gunter. Synthia Nelson, Sylvia Nelson, Ernestine Hennis, Mary Jane Nelson, Jean Oakley and Ruth Leake. New members of the team were Peggy Hennis, Betty Jo Ferguson, Faye Bullins, Sarah Joyce, Carol Mabe, Geneva Williams, Joy Knight, Emily Smith, Mattie Lou Handy, and Nancy Griffin. Along with these we had Mr. and Mrs. Lyons as new coaches. l Temple Tilley and Ruth Leake served as co-captains this year. Gloria Shaffer, as manager, has kept the team chewing and has been very helpful as hold-it-all and in keeping the dressing room clean. Although most of our team suffered from 'tfirst-year-itis we managed to rate fifth place in the county, winning ten games and losing eight. We were sometimes beaten in score but were never beaten in spirit. The team showed commendable spirit in victory and defeat. RUTH LEAKE Sports Editor BOYS' SPORTS The boys started off the basketball season with only two regulars back from the team last year, Marion Dodson and Donnie Amos. To replace Bobby Joyce, Joe Dillon and Frank Moore there were R. E. Steele, Leroy Dodson and Bobby Carter. These boys came along fine and went on to win the first nine games of the year, before losing the tenth to Stoneville. Keith Dodson and Wayne Knight proved to be very capable substitutes. We had a first string of seven boys, because these two could not be counted out. Behind these seven came Ray Corns, a sophomore, and Melvin Dodson, Bobby Shelton, Junior Richardson and Jimmy Martin, four freshmen who should develop into a combination worth watching in the years to come. L. D. Martin and Bobby Hall, two seniors, came out late but saw a lot of action. Combining these boys led by co-captains Donnie Amos and Leroy Dodson, we put together a team which compiled a record of 14-4 in all the games and a 9-3 county record for third place in the county standing. The leading scorers were Donnie Amos with an average of 21.6 per game and Marion Dodson with 17.4 per game. Much of the credit for success of the team must go to our coach Mr. Reece who had the patience, know how , and ability to guide us through another very suc- cessful year in basketball. Spring is here and time for the baseball season to begin. We are looking for- ward to a big season this year. We have been county champions for the past two years and are hoping to make it the third year with Mr. Eugene Lyons back as our coach. We still have our two good pitchers, southpaw Leroy Dodson and right-handed Marion Dodson. We lost seven players last year by graduation. I'm sure they will be missed, but we know we can count on those reliable replacements from last year. DONNIE AMOS, Sports Editor 44
