Timberline Lodge Celebrates 50 Years IN TH€ SHADOW OF rhe Notional Hisroncol Londmork TmoeOne Lod e yonds the new and modern Wy'eosr Day Lodge Even x, rime stands sH! ir rhe old lodge, changes occur on rhe outside Alrhough ir may seem like Mr Hood is a long way from Sandy, ocruolly, Sondy Union High School is practically on rhe mountain. SHS is rhe closest high school to Mr. Hood, the highest mountain in Oregon, wirh boundaries extending oil rhe way up to and beyond Government Comp. So, when one of rhe most significant historical monuments in rhe U S that is located on Mr Hood has on anniversary, Sondy students should take notice. As rhe town continues to change and becomes more and more modern, wirh new businesses popping up all around, citizens should nor forger about Timberline Lodge — where rime hos stood srill for fifty years. In rhe 1980's people ore disappointed if rhey don't own a cor In rhe 1930's when Timberline wos built, people were lucky if rhey had o job. These were rhe terrible yeors of rhe Great Depression President Franklin Delono Roosevelt formed o number of federal ogenoes to bring more jobs to rhe unemployed One of these ogenaes, rhe WPA (Works Progress Administration), along wirh rhe U S Forest Service, creored Timberline Lodge Construction on the lodge began in 1935 on o sire chosen ro accomodate rhe needs of skiers, dimbers, hikers, and sight seers. Ir wos built wirh stone walls and huge timbers so it could withstand heavy snows ond strong winds The designers of rhe lodge felr rhor it should be built ro go wirh irs surroundings They made lorge oreas for windows ro bring rhe mounrain into' rhe lodge Also, rhe archirecrs followed rhree rhemes of Mr Hood's heritage: rhe Pioneers, rhe Northwest Indions, ond rhe native wildlife of Mr Hood 4—opening Visitors ro rhe lodge can find rroces of these rhree rhemes everywhere. After two yeors of construction, rhe lodge wos finally finished Alrhough this may seem like o long rime, ir is important ro remember that practically everything was made by hand ond wirh rhe hardships rhar rhe 500 men and women who builr rhe lodge wenr through, construction was actually quick. Nowadays if there is on inch of snow on rhe ground, school is cancelled Sometimes construction projects are even stopped for rhe winter. This wasn't so with Timberline Lodge Mosr of rhe people who worked on ir lived in Government Comp in rents with wood floors and sides. They often had to walk much of rhe way ro Timberline each day. and didn't stop for rhe snow But rhe acrual construction isn’r rhe only thing special about Timberline Lodge The amounr of individual work by rhe orrisrs and craftsmen also make ir special Through rhe whole lodge carvings, paintings, iron structures, ond hand-woven rugs abound Even now. mosr oil furnishings are hondmade Fifty yeors after rhe lodge was dedicated by President Roosevelt and officially finished. Timberline srill remains rhe some as it did before Ir is a hotel where skiers, climbers and tourists often sray in rhe some rooms rhar older sixers, climbers, and rourisrs used ro stay And ir srill employs mony local mounrain people, including some Sandy students who are trying ro eorn enough money ro ger rheir cars
