Heaton’s Arrival Brings Many Changes Tardies, smoking, and srria disdpline were among rhe new policies being enforced ar SHS. Along wirh rhe arrival of Superinrendenr-Prindpal Dr Kenr Heoron come o new ser of rules for rhe sraff and srudenrs. The purpose was ro moke SHS o more posirive environmenr conducive ro learning. Ar rhe beginning of rhe school year ir wos apparenr ro mosr of rhe administration rhar rhere was a problem wirh excessive absences and rordies, nor ro menrion smoking, chewing and truancy. From September ro rhe srarr of January, rhanks ro o righrer discipline policy, rhere were 196 suspensions. Although several of these suspensions were rhe some person being suspended more rhan once, ir was srill a higher number rhon in posr years. Near rhe beginning of rhe year, rhe school district hired Dennis Daniels who become a sorr of hall monitor porroling school grounds ro help cur down on vandalism, rruancy, smoking and rordies. Ar first, Assisronr Prindpol Dick Harrison was rhe one dealing with mosr offenders He commented, First of all, we enforced rhe dosed campus rule. This cur down on a lor of rhe problems. Sraff was affecred by rwo changes. First was a school-wide no smoking policy Teachers had ro leove campus ro smoke, a did disrricr patrons who come ro arhleric evenrs and orher activities. After all, Harrison concluded, how many srudenrs ore going ro be lore ro class when rhe reachers are ourside warching rhem? Ar rhe end of rhe firsr semester, more changes occurred ar SHS. The school board changed Assisronr Principal Dennis Crow's rirle ro Principal. Thor left Hearon wirh rhe rirle of Superintendent. Dick Horrison was srill Assisronr Prindpol, bur he moved from disdpline ro srricrly srudenr services and scheduling. To complere rhe change, Mike Funderburg wos named Administrate Intern Da KENT HEATOn came ro by woy of i ho and was pur in charge of discipline Since rhe crock-down on disdpline, Things improved. There wos a decrease in rordies, smoking and overall discipline, and once ogoin, a berrer ourlook for Sondy High 2—opening
