Baker Shares Indian Experiences Dear Mrs. Harr, Well, congrorulorions on rhe budger!! (Dill Waugh thinks some officials were paid off.) I'm glad ro hear rhor ir finally wenr through. From all occounrs, Supr. Hearon seems ro be making many changes or SUHS. I understand rhar nor all of rhe changes ore populor There was a big commotion in rhe compound last nighr. Monoj was shooting marbles when he saw a green Mamba snake slither under a rock. A general search- and-desrroy wos organized and eventually they caught it. Ugly sucker The weather here is absolutely fantastic. Eighty-two degrees, low humidity — parodise, in short. Ir really couldn’t be better. You know what they say about rhe best laid plans of mice and men. Believe ir or nor. I've only got another three months of school. It's true, by about March 7th, I'll be starring my five-month vacation. The rest of rhe students will start finol exams on March 7th, bur since I won't be going ro those, my vocation'll start March 7rh. Sheeesh!!! My classes now are: Hindi. Economics, History, English, Socidogy and Kannada. They're so easy. Academically, I'm nor getting much our of this yeor Dur I certainly hove leorned a tremendous amount of Indian culture AH things considered, ir would be best for me ro retake my junior year. I’m nor particularly happy about having ro do so, bur I think ir would be ro my benefit. Oh, well, we'll worry about rhor when I come back. I’m watching on interesting spectacle now. Encephalitis is going around so rhe governments slaughtering all rhe wild pigs Someone's trying ro catch this gigonric sow. She's (rhe sow) making a lor of noise. Sounds like o bit of hell. Arne Daker Wilson Spends Year How would you feel if you left your family and friends for a whole year? Well, Krissie Wilson did just that She spent her entire junior year in Brazil learning other cultures and meeting other people. Krissie lived in Londrino Parana, on area with only five other Americans. She leorned rhe Portugese language in just three months, quire an accomplishment for such a difficult language. Brazilian schods were different for Krissie. First, they were open, meaning rhar no walls separated rhe rooms. School was held three rimes a day, and students could choose which rime they wanted ro orrend. Students in first grade through high schod could go either from 7:30 om ro 12:30 pm, or from 2pm ro 6 pm. High schoolers rhor worked during rhe day could go ro schod from 7 pm ro 11 pm. People in Brazil are really friendly and open-minded according ro Krissie. They are also sociable people No drinking age exists. In Brazil so after school many students go into rhe bars ro drink and socialize with their friends. Krissie commented rhar rhe people in Brazil seemed much happier than Americans. She said they hove no fear of nuclear war there. She also noted rhor there ore people in Brazil who are either very rich or very poor. She said rhor rhe families are very close and coring. Brazilian food is heavy — they have rice and beans every night and after they ear, everyone sleeps for a couple of hours. Brazilians have tors of borbeques and they mostly borbeque steak. Krissie was able ro travel o tor while in Brazil. She visited both Argentina and Paraguay. Krissie odjusred well after she found our rhar there were dentists in Brazil. She rook 15 toothbrushes with her because she thought they had no dentists. When she got there, she discovered rhar her host mother was a dentist.
