% MEEMA Schools are made for memories. They are the architects and builders of dreams. The molders of spirit. The creators of beauty. For those who get involved in their school, dreams can come true. Silently from the sky, Tufts of cold, dry goose down From the heavens on high. The snow so soft, so still, So while. Comes to blanket the shivering earth On a cold winter’s night. The softly drifting snow Casts a spell over beast and man, Silence envelopes civilization, Peace is at hand. The Pioneer mural that clings to the wall, Is centered at the entrance of the main hall. It holds a memory of a past gone by, Of the unknown Pioneers at Sandy High. It leads through the path of Pioneer days, To the Sandy River where the memories drift away But the deer stand aside with a watchful eye, On the Pioneers to come to Sandy High. Debra Johnson The Commons. Breakfast could be chocolate chip cookies, egg sandwich or sweet roll. Snack, a candy bar or coke. Lunch may be pizza, burger or soup bowl. Snack again if we re not broke. Dinner features leftovers, potato chips, granola or cokes. Much discussed, much condemned. The cafeteria machines prove to be an any hour friend to hungry Sandy folks. The breakfast nook away from home for 1325 students and 144 faculty members, the Commons, serves a wide variety of food to suit any taste. For breakfast 15 dozen sweet rolls, maple bars and donuts are sold daily, but the most popular early morning food is the chocolate chip cookies. Twenty-three dozen of these, hot from the oven, are consumed daily. Cheeseburgers are by far the most popular lunch foods with 15 dozen purchased every day. making 900 a week. Pizza runs a close second, selling 350 pieces on the one day a week it is offered. Although many students drink soda pop. six cases of milk are sold daily. With 66 cartons of milk to a case that makes 396 glasses of cow’s juice. Besides the nutritious foods as those mentioned above, great quantities of junk foods are consumed, but these are stocked by a private concern. It is impossible to get a count on these items. Not only does the Commons serve as a feed- ing through all day. but other activities are staged there - wrestling matches, dances, talent shows, fashion shows and plays. The Library... Books on shelves Magazines, papers on racks. Chairs and desks for studying Pillows on the floor for tired backs. Card files for searching, Film strips to view. This is your library Where spirit and knowledge you can renew. The Lockers In an empty school building I sit, look at lockers, wait for inspiration. I fall asleep. I awake to a night illumined by bright dancing moonlight. The air, exhiliratingly crisp, lit with the night-magic of a full moon. Moon-fog twists and vapor-mists, forming.........ghosts. Locker-spirits, embodying portions of spirits of people passed. People who have left us because luck just wasn’t with them on that tight curve, or because the other guy was over the center-line. Because their hunting partners weren’t REALLY safe hunters like the shoulder patch said. Because they wanted to know what was on the other side and couldn’t wait to find out, or because life was just too hard to take, so they took their own lives. Many of the faces are clear, but the names need not be mentioned; they are too close in time, the memories too vivid, too fresh, too clear. Lockers, containers of life, capture a few strands from the stout ropes of our lives. At the end of another school year, we remove all physical traces that we occupied these lockers, carrying with us our locker-spirits, to next year’s lockers, unless fate dictates that one of us falls. Leaving behind only the locker-spirit, liberated when he or she dies. Greg Skelton The buses... The final bell rings harshly. But it’s music to our ears. The rush begins through the door; Voices erupt in glad cheers. Footsteps clatter loudly in the crowded halls. Lockers slam violently. See you tomorrow, we wave and Shout to all. To the yellow coaches waiting, We rush on winged feet. We’re going home, Another day of school is complete. The squeeze is on. One, two, Three we crowd into our seats. We don’t mind. Let’s go home, Our joy knows no retreat. The alarm rings loudly. In the morning the process is reversed. We dress hurriedly and Walk like robots well rehearsed. To the yellow coaches waiting patiently, We go on dragging feet. We’re going to school. Move over; don’t take all the seat. This is a story Begun in our childhood days, A tale somewhat exaggerated But true at least in many ways. Waterfalls tumble From drenched cliffs When spring rains And melting snow Overflow earth’s surface. Bubbling springs, Turbid rivers And flooded fields, This is spring, Cruel yet incredibly beautiful. With fragrant flowers Pushing through the damp earth, Blossoms crowding the tree branches, Winter’s chill is forgotten And spring’s capriciousness forgiven. Sui 'i •  r% ,«: ar 2 Class of '79 big, shrinks to 250 The large freshman class of ' 79 stagger- ed the imagination of Sandy High. Of the 330 who started, only 250 graduated after many moved away, some dropped out and some didn’t quite make the grade. During this year, Cindy Lakey, Delores Randall. Debbie Randall, Gwen Wallis and Peri Miller represented the senior class on the varsity football rally, providing the greatly appreciated support for the team, which included nine all-league honored seniors. Homecoming proved exciting and stimu- lated school spirit. Cindy Lakey was crown- ed queen and Becky Orcutt and Cathy Gil- berg served as princesses of the festivities. First place in the float competition caused senior enthusiasm to reach a peak which lasted throughout most of the year. In the first annual Sports Challenge, the class took first place by a narrow margin of five points over the sophomores. Seniors enthusiasm hit its second peak. The class graduated on May 24 with a multitude of people in attendance. The class colors were maroon and gray. We alone hold the colors to paint our rain- bow was the motto chosen by the class. Red roses were selecied as the class flower. Top right: Darrell Boring plays saxophone while directing the pep band at a basket- ball game. Sandy High students were ordered to take the shots or prove they had been inoculated by their doctors. If they did not comply, they would not be allowed to attend school until the epidemic ended. Fortunately for many stu- dents. the epidemic ended before the threat was to be carried out. One doctor and one nurse vaccinated ap- proximately 1200 students in one day. Some students shook off the shot with no ill effects, others fainted or became ill and had to be carried to sick bay. Japanese studente, teacher spend busy three weeks here This year 11 Japanese students and a teacher from Sosa Senior High School in Yokaichiba, Japan arrived on March 22 for a 21-day visit. While they were at Sandy, they partici- pated in many classes, even cooking Ja- panese food in the gourmet foods class and teaching the kindercare children how to do origami (paper folding). They went to Far- rell's to celebrate three birthdays and to the Organ Grinder for pizza. They went ice skating, bowling and to many parties in students’ homes. One day was spent traveling to Salem to meet Governor Vic Atiyeh On their last day at Sandy, a farewell assembly was held. The Japanese per- formed a festival dance from their country. At the end of the dance they presented their happi coats (festival coats) to their host brothers and sisters. They sang a Japanese song and the Sandy High alma- mater. After they left Sandy, they traveled from Portland to San Francisco by Amtrak and then boarded a 747 jet for the nine-hour trip back home. Right: Japanese attend farewell assembly. Another visitor from Japan was Hisae Matoi who stayed at Sandy for six months. She also attended classes, learned to understand and talk English. She was very friendly, enthusiastic and popular with students, and she was especially help- ful in the Japanese humanities. Asiatic studies and kindercare classes. She help- ed to teach students about her country, trained many students to make folded ani- mals and helped many students how to speak a little Japanese. In Italy, he attends a high school for aeronautics which prepares students to become pilots, and his time spent at Sandy will delay his graduation from one to two years. His school accepts girls, but very few attend, so the coed school was Walter’s first experience to go to school with so many girls. All the classes I took here helped me a lot, Walter said, especially physics and pre-calculus. He added that the civics class was very interesting and the typing class was his first experience with this type of class. Walter participated at Sandy on the soc- cer and tennis teams. Since his school in Italy has no sports program, he belongs to two clubs - tennis and recreational skiing. His future plans are not set yet since he has more schooling before he enters col- lege. All Italian young men must spend one year in the military service. Since his schooling has been pilot’s training, he will go into the Air Force after college.
