VARSITY GRIDDERS LABOR FOR NEW COACH Even though finishing with a disappointing 2-7 record, the Sandy Pioneer 11 , under first year Head Coach Jim Turin, had numerous bright spots during the course of the season. The Red and Black forces went into the opening contest against Reynolds with 10 returning lettermen, including seven starters from the year before, and the outlook for the 1969 grid campaign looked promising. But the Lancers, led by a powerful fullback - the Wil- co loop's top scorer, ripped through the Pioneer defense for a 27-0 triumph. The Frontiersmen's only big moment came on a 42-yard aerial from Jim Martin to Dean Phelps which penetrated to the Lancer 15, but a 15-yard holding penalty on the next play stifled the effort. The Pioneers opened their home season the following week against Wy'East, the team that finished fifth in the league. The Eagles combined a crunching ground game and two touchdowns in 22 seconds late in the second per- iod to defeat SUHS 27-0. Outstanding in defeat for Sandy were Tackles Randy Huserik and Ron Boyles, Fullback Roger Williams and Halfback Dennis Weisen, who brought the crowd to its feet more than once on two stirring runs and two pass receptions. With the opening kickoff at Silverton, Brent Peterson took a hand-off from Phelps and streaked 92 yards from the sidelines for the Pioneer' first touchdown of the year. Peterson scored the second time with a 10-yard run, but to no avail for the Silverton Foxes retaliated with four touchdowns to win 28-14. The kickoff return by Peterson was the longest in Pioneer history, breaking the old 89- yard record held jointly by Jim Sliger, '69, and Jerry McLain, '67. 20

(Kneeling) Ron Boyles, Randy Huserik, Jim Martin, Dean Phelps. (Crouching) Dennis Weisen, Steve Redmon, Alan Go- ger, Don Pullen, Steve Cantenbcin. (Standing) John Day, Terry Cansler, Paul Wunische, Larry Thomas, Mgr. Joel Mills. The number one grid outfit in the state came to town a week later and the Crusaders of Jesuit sent the Frontiers- men down to their fourth straight defeat with a 24-0 victory. Jesuit, which hadn't lost in 3. 5 years at the time of this game, was held scoreless for the first 22 minutes before breaking loose for four TD's. Again Weisen, Williams, Boyles and Huserik were standouts in defeat along with Paul Wunische and Don Pullen. Win-hungry Pioneers shot down the Canby Cougars 20-0 in the next game for the first victory of the season. TD's were scored by Weisen, Peterson and Williams. William's educated toe accounted for the two conversion counters. Peterson's tally came on a 78-yard scamper after a timely block by Williams, recording Sandy's second longest run from scrimmage. Only Jon Sandstrom, '65, with a 81-yard romp against Molalla in 1963 topped Peterson's feat. The counter gave the 190-pound, redheaded senior his 92nd career point, topped only by Bill Henselman, '59. Roger Williams, Sandy's hard-charging fullback, rescued the Pioneers from football disaster at the hands of The Dalles Indians. His fourth quarter surge brought two touchdowns and a 14-6 victory. The powerful Pioneer gained over 100 yards as he smashed through the Indian line time and time again. This win provided the two in a row for the season. Injuries plagued the Frontiersmen when they gave battle but lost to the Central Panthers 34-6. After Sandy had driven down the field in the opening minutes of the game, Williams crashed over from the one for the evening's first score, then misfortune struck. On the ensuing try for the extra point, Williams, who also does the kicking, was belted by a 280-pound tackle. The instant Williams' foot hit the ball, his leg was frac- tured in two places. This brought to an end his high sch- ool football and basketball careers. And if that wasn't enough, Halfbacks Dean Phelps and Dennis Weisen were also put on the injured list, Weisen (continued to page 22) 21
