MEE MA SANDY, OREGON Arenetta Paige Editor Eleanore Hermanson Jan Haselwander Adviser Associate Editor We wish to express our appreciation to Mr. and Mis. Carroll Hermanson for all the help they provided in producing this yearbook. Vol. 38 1969 - 70 “MY FAIR After many months of great anticipation and lots of hard work, the first musical in the history of SUHS came off as a huge success. My Fair Lady, based on George Bernard Shaw's Pygmalion, included many well-known Lerner and Loewe songs, such as Get Me to the Church on Time, Wouldn't It Be Loverly, I Could Have Danced All Night, and many others. Preparations began in the spring of '69 when the lead parts were awarded after two days of try-outs. Then came the long, hard task of memorizing the parts during the summer. With the opening of school in the fall, the maj- ority of the work also began. Planning costumes LADY’’ ROARING SUCCESS and scenery, reciting lines and most important, rehearsals became a part of the cast's everyday life. It was easy to tell when the rehearsals were underway and to detect members of the cast. They walked trancelike in the hallways and classrooms as if they had had only five hours sleep. During the final week, this was not far from true. After the tension had built up and tempers be- came short, the opening night finally arrived! All doubts diminished as an enthusiastic student audience displayed their approval. Although the two following performances received standing ova- tions, opening night was the big test. Closing night was unique in that each director received token gifts from the cast. These were chosen because they represented the traditional theater expressions the directors used during the production weeks. It's going to be a bomb, Mr. John Bowma head director, had often said. He received a miniature time bomb. Mr. Dennis Crow, drama coach, earned a dolly with a broken leg because of his frequent remark, Break a leg. A dolly make-up kit was given to Mr. Gary Connelly, art director, while a champagne glass and a carton of milk was received by Mr. Fred Proett, orchestra director, for his quip, I'll drink to that! 3 7 mmmmm MAIN CHARACTERS Eliza .............. VARSITY GRIDDERS LABOR FOR NEW COACH Even though finishing with a disappointing 2-7 record, the Sandy Pioneer 11 , under first year Head Coach Jim Turin, had numerous bright spots during the course of the season. The Red and Black forces went into the opening contest against Reynolds with 10 returning lettermen, including seven starters from the year before, and the outlook for the 1969 grid campaign looked promising. But the Lancers, led by a powerful fullback - the Wil- co loop's top scorer, ripped through the Pioneer defense for a 27-0 triumph. The Frontiersmen's only big moment came on a 42-yard aerial from Jim Martin to Dean Phelps which penetrated to the Lancer 15, but a 15-yard holding penalty on the next play stifled the effort. The Pioneers opened their home season the following week against Wy'East, the team that finished fifth in the league. The Eagles combined a crunching ground game and two touchdowns in 22 seconds late in the second per- iod to defeat SUHS 27-0. Outstanding in defeat for Sandy were Tackles Randy Huserik and Ron Boyles, Fullback Roger Williams and Halfback Dennis Weisen, who brought the crowd to its feet more than once on two stirring runs and two pass receptions. With the opening kickoff at Silverton, Brent Peterson took a hand-off from Phelps and streaked 92 yards from the sidelines for the Pioneer' first touchdown of the year. Peterson scored the second time with a 10-yard run, but to no avail for the Silverton Foxes retaliated with four touchdowns to win 28-14. The kickoff return by Peterson was the longest in Pioneer history, breaking the old 89- yard record held jointly by Jim Sliger, '69, and Jerry McLain, '67. 20 (Kneeling) Ron Boyles, Randy Huserik, Jim Martin, Dean Phelps. (Crouching) Dennis Weisen, Steve Redmon, Alan Go- ger, Don Pullen, Steve Cantenbcin. (Standing) John Day, Terry Cansler, Paul Wunische, Larry Thomas, Mgr. Joel Mills. The number one grid outfit in the state came to town a week later and the Crusaders of Jesuit sent the Frontiers- men down to their fourth straight defeat with a 24-0 victory. Jesuit, which hadn't lost in 3. 5 years at the time of this game, was held scoreless for the first 22 minutes before breaking loose for four TD's. Again Weisen, Williams, Boyles and Huserik were standouts in defeat along with Paul Wunische and Don Pullen. Win-hungry Pioneers shot down the Canby Cougars 20-0 in the next game for the first victory of the season. TD's were scored by Weisen, Peterson and Williams. William's educated toe accounted for the two conversion counters. Peterson's tally came on a 78-yard scamper after a timely block by Williams, recording Sandy's second longest run from scrimmage. Only Jon Sandstrom, '65, with a 81-yard romp against Molalla in 1963 topped Peterson's feat. The counter gave the 190-pound, redheaded senior his 92nd career point, topped only by Bill Henselman, '59. Roger Williams, Sandy's hard-charging fullback, rescued the Pioneers from football disaster at the hands of The Dalles Indians. His fourth quarter surge brought two touchdowns and a 14-6 victory. The powerful Pioneer gained over 100 yards as he smashed through the Indian line time and time again. This win provided the two in a row for the season. Injuries plagued the Frontiersmen when they gave battle but lost to the Central Panthers 34-6. After Sandy had driven down the field in the opening minutes of the game, Williams crashed over from the one for the evening's first score, then misfortune struck. On the ensuing try for the extra point, Williams, who also does the kicking, was belted by a 280-pound tackle. The instant Williams' foot hit the ball, his leg was frac- tured in two places. This brought to an end his high sch- ool football and basketball careers. And if that wasn't enough, Halfbacks Dean Phelps and Dennis Weisen were also put on the injured list, Weisen (continued to page 22) 21 (continued from page 21) with a slight concussion and Phelps with tom hip muscles. Estacada Rangers next delivered Sandy's sixth loss of the season with a 36-0 score. A 48-yard Indian touchdown pass in the final period of the game lifted Molalla to a 12-8 victory over Sandy. The Pioneers built a 7-0 lead in the third quarter on a spectacular 87-yard pass intercep- tion by Frontiersman speed- mer- chant Brent Peterson, who hijacked the pass on his own 13 and raced down the gridiron untouched. Pet- erson also booted the extra point, by Mike Hite Referee gives V for victory after Sandy TD on the home turf Football staff includes Coach James Turin, Coach James Kit- Martin works hot line, chen, Athletic Director Ken Brown, Coach Dennis Warren and Coach Glen Smith. 22 J.V. TALLIES GOOD YEAR The JV Bucks ended the season with a 3-3-1 record. The defensive team generally did a good job, holding two teams scoreless. The offense started slowly but began to really click near the end of the season. In the third and fourth games, two outstanding players were lost due to injuries, Cliff Sandercock with a broken leg and Mike Leary with a knee injury. Individually many played well and we have a lot of good prospects for varsity next year,11 Coach Smith declar- ed. JV football team members are (1st row from L) Dennis Lake, Pat McMahon, Larry Moody, Ross Snell, Cliff San- dercock, Jerry Stratton, Don Senner, Tom Ellis. (2nd row) Bill Parker, Ted Samson, Jim Kerr, Dan Adamson, Mitch Eblen, Steve Truesdale, Lynn Hartzler, Cliff Nelson, Mike Abercrombie. FROSH PLAY BALL Although the freshman football team, led by first year frosh coach, Mr. Dennis Warren, man- aged only one win in eight contests, they triumph- ed over the Rangers of Estacada at the end of the season by a score of 16 to 0. Coach Warren commented that the overall re- cord did not testify to the capabilities of the team. The team, playing a rough schedule, showed hus- tle and some bright prospects for the future. by Tom Fussell 24 Team members are (kneeling) Jeff HoUenbeck, (standing) John Dixon, Steve Parker, Tom Fussell, Coach Lee Cole, Curt Meier, Terry Moore and Mgr. Randy Hunt. HARRIERS TURN OUT FOR CROSS COUNTRY Jeff Hollenbeck and other team members await starting of the meet. The cross country team under new coach, Mr. Lee Cole, and consisting of only six members had just one home meet all season with the other five on the road. Lack of turnout hampered the Pioneer effort. Sev- eral standouts from the team of the previous year failed to come out this year, so the team wasn't as strong as expected. The team had only one var- sity returnee, three year letterman Tom Fussell. Curt Meier and opponent obey signs and keep moving. 25 WEEK FEATURES Bonfire: Roaring success. Students doing their thing. Homecoming court includes Freshman Princess Diane Moore, Sophomore Princess Cathy Proctor, Queen Char Hames, Junior Princess Karen Hutchins and Senior Princess Jean Thompson.
