Text from Pages 1 - 128 of the 1961 volume:

Dedication Mrs. Parmenter, three years ago you joined the faculty at Sandy and have since that time contributed a great deal to the school and to the students. We, the senior class, feel particularly indebted to you for your unceasing a d cheer- fully given cooperation, help and inspiration during the production of the junior class play and the prom. We have admired you as a teacher, advisor and, most of all, as a friend. For these reasons and many, many more, we, the class of 1961, wish to dedicate this Mee Ma to you. This year, Hilmiye Metin of Bursa, Turkey, has become part of our school and what we shall always remember of the years 1960 and 1961. Hilmiye, a petite, rather quiet girl, has endeared herself through her sense of humor and friendliness to all who have been privileged to become acquainted with her. Knowing and working with Hilmiye has been a pleasure and an experience that Sandy High School will never forget. Hilmiye is 17 years old and goes to school at Bursa Kiz Lisesi (Bursa Girls’ High School) in Bursa, Turkey, the fifth largest city. Turkey, Hilmiye informs us, is quite modern and has much the same kind of climate as Oregon, although it varies in different regions just as it does here. Hilmiye’s family consists of her father who is a car- penter, her mother who works in a silf bactory, a brother, 15, and a sister, 8. Before Hilmiye came to the United States, she was going to become a math teacher; now she wants to be an English teacher, “maybe”, and hopes to win a scholarship to an American college to study some more. , Hilmiye says, “I just love the United States, Sandy High School and the students here. I have had many good times at school with my friends. Before I came to Sandy I thought I wouldn't find such good friends as I have in Turkey, but now it seems just like home to me.” TH£R£ fcR£ FOUR KINDS Of P£OPl£: Those who don't KvlOW that tkeij don't know-, Those wko know •that thsij don't know-, Those. who dovt'l know that: the j Wvtow •, those who know) that theu know. This comedy concerns a mis- chievous thirteen-year-old girl who, by trying to help a college student in need of a place to stay involves him, herself and her family in many amusing situations. By the invention of a desperate sounding story, she persuades her mother to let him stay, which solves the immediate problem, but which causes many more problems. The characters were chosen as follows: Jack Strope as Fred Miller, a lawyer in his early forties; Colleen McLean as Harriet, Fred’s attractive wife; Joan Grambo as Mitzi, the mischievous thirteen-year-old; Bob Hensleman as Ben, Mitzi's shy, stud- ious brother; Fern Horttor as Kathy Miller, a pretty, sweet eighteen-year-old; Sharon Smith as Mrs. Cooney, an ironing woman who is always ailing; Larry Bartley as Joe Robertson- Handy”-the good-looking uni- versity student; Trecia McLain as Mary Jane Price, a member of the high school pep squad;Jerry Isackson as Spike, a swag- gering football hero; Wayne Berglund as Sidney, crooner for a local orchestra; Elaine Plaster as Ducky, the good pal of Kathy; Bud Skipper as Bert, Ducky’s boy friend; Tinker Heyn as Lenore, Ducky’s dramatic cousin; Emilie West as Mrs. Robert- son, Handy’s charming, well-groomed mother; and La Rita Russell as Mrs. Custer, the fussy next-door neighbor. The student directors were Beverley Drew, Jim Thornton, and Carol Hensleman. The Director and advisor was Mr. Allen. John Pittman and Jack Strope handled the staging. Loletta Anderson and Delores Reynolds did the make-up. J. Schilling L. Bjork C. Valberg .M. Mitchell E. Woods 83 j D. Cutsforth. f L. Lauderback Pres. Kennedy B. Although placing 5th in the league, the scrappy Pioneers gave the fans many thrilling moments during the season. Most of the punch and drive came from “never say die” Pioneers such as Jim Wolf, with his accurate passing; George Shaw, the ever hustling offense and defensive end; Everett Hollenbeck, defensive player; Art Skipper, a never out hustled or out charged lineman; Warren Horning with his power and break away speed to go long runs and Don James to keep them honest up the middle. The high light of the season came in the final game with Parkrose as the hustling Pioneers dominated the game on offense to give themselves a 31 - 0 season finale. I 00-1 IMS I Va rsi t v Basko Ilia 11 The 1960-61 edition of the Sandy High “Pio- neers”, with a complete disregard for pre- season rating and a lack of tested veterans, began their first practice with seventeen boys, only three of whom had seen any previous hardwork experience and then only on a limited scale. Pre-season “dope had predicted the “Pio- neers” to finish last in the league because of lack of height, speed, and experience, but the “dopesters” failed to reckon with a desire to win which was a trademark of the team all season. Only the lack of experience kept Sandy from a better win-loss record. The final Wilco league standings are: Scap- poose 14-0, Jesuit 10-4, Reynolds 9-5, Sandy 8-6. Scoring wise, Jim Wolf paced all Sandy scorers with 225 points and a 16.1 average for league play which left him just 12 points shy of Dennis Fergerson, Reynolds guard, who finished first with 237 points. It was just a question of too little, too late for both Jim Wolf scoring wise and his mates as the SEASON RECORD Dec. 2 Wilson 51 Sandy 35 Dec. 6 Benson 49 Sandy 50 Dec. 9 Battleground 51 Sandy 28 Dec. 13 Battleground 52 Sandy 45 Dec. 16 Gresham 57 Sandy 49 Dec. 20 Jesuit 44 Sandy 42 Jan. 6 Silverton 36 Sandy 50 Jan. 13 Wy'East 49 Sandy 57 Jan. 17 Reynolds 48 Sandy 42 Jan. 20 Parkrose 36 Sandy 35 Jan. 24 Mo lalla 47 Sandy 59 Jan. 27 Scappoose 68 Sandy 60 Feb. 3 Jesuit 58 Sandy 48 Feb. 7 Silverton 53 Sandy 68 Feb. 10 Wy'East 55 Sandy 59 Feb. 17 Reynolds 54 Sandy 58 Feb. 21 Parkrose 54 Sandy 67 Feb. 24 Molalla 41 Sandy 49 Mar. 3 Scappoose 55 Sandy 47 team played down to the wire for a possible 2nd place tourney berth but early season losses spilled their undoing. Among the many bright outlooks during the season was the play of three sophomores who saw much action as varsity players; Carl Sandstrom, 6'5 center, who finished 3rd scoring for Sandy and 13th in league action, Dan Nichols 6' forward and Larry Russell a guard. All showed good team work, defensive ability and a genuine desire to play, and should be the basis for a strong Sandy team next year. In addition the squad carried five juniors led by high scoring Gary Barden and dependable reserves Carl Aschoff and Frank Emerson. All in all the team proved an inspiration to work with. Spirit remained high, all players worked hard, long hours to make a winner. Two men proved to be outstanding for the year, Jim Wolf with his leadership and all around team play, and Lenny Searls and his “quick” hands and constant go, go, go. Such are teams made of!! Warren Horning should repeat in the 100 and 200 yard dashes and Harold Polvika, Dave Ludi, Len Searls and Dave Rowley will carry the 440 and 880 and mile honors. In the hurdles and high jump, Don James will be our number one man with Carl Sandstrom puching him in the high jump. All other areas will be wide open and should prove interesting. BASEBALL This year’s baseball team started off with 32 players, mostely freshmen. Out of these 32 players, there were only five letter- men returning to play. They were Jim Wolf, Eddie Boyko, Dennis Cutsforth and Roy Potter. The team captain was Jim Wolf. At the beginning of the season as this book was going to press.
