Mrs. Parmenter, who directed the play, gave this short summary: “The action occurred in a long-deserted and even haunted statecoach station on the Old Spanish Trail in southern Arizona. The play action started at 11:00 p.m. and ran until 2:00 a.m. During this time the characters, who had arrived at this forsaken place because of a bus breakdown, experienced many difficulties. Among these characters were Mr. Elmer Berry, a small town businessman played by Jack Strope; his wife Bessie, played by LaRita Russell; their daughter Millie, Jeannie Closner, and Carlton Pope, who played Manuel, the Mexican bus driver. Other passengers were Petunia Potter, an old maid, Elaine Plaster; Matt Walters, a young man, Mark Snethen; a washedout blonde chorus girl, Tinker Heyn; and Old Bones, a prospector, portrayed by Larry Bartley. Added to the humor were the old Indian squaw, Poeanti, who was played by Barbara 64 Kaston; Septimus Jepson, an archaeologist, really Bruce Gray, and Lolita, the Mexican girl, played by Nola Goodrich.” $ Front: B. For the first time ever in football, the Pioneers were the District 2-Al representative in the State quarter-finals. A chilly, injury-ridden Pioneer team met the Port- land Interscholastic League and defending State Champs, Jefferson, at Jefferson’s home field. GERNHART The Jeff-men established a modern record in their 70-7 scoring onslaught. Only bright spot for the Pioneers was the accurate passing of Jim Wolf, which culminated in Ernie Hollenbeck’s second quarter TD. During the rest of the season, two seniors, playing their first year of football, provided most of the thrills as Ed Hoffman and Doug Will turned in sparkling offensive performances. Both were extremely capable runners and dangerous pass receivers for Jim Wolf’s ready passes. Lyle Schwartz, the big man in the Sandy backfield, pro- vided the power up the middle. A stand-out throughout the season was the Pioneer line. Bob Holt, Lynn Winchester, Duane Morris and Bud Skipper were the four most often noticed on defense and offense. Varsity Wrestling First-year Varsity Coach Zel Gernhart en joyed a successful season with his Pioneer mat-men at Sandy this year. Six wrestlers from Sandy qualified for the State Wrestling Tournament in the district tourney at Parkrose on Friday and Saturday, March 4 and 5th. To qualify, a wrestler had to place either first or second in his division. Four Sandy men: Terry Spahr, at 115 lbs; Ed Shook, at 123 lbs; Bud Skipper, at 157 lbs; and Lynn Winchester at 191 lbs. all placed first in the finals at the district. Carlton Pope, at 123 lbs., and Ken Strick- land, at 148 lbs. lost only their final matches to wind up with second places and a trip to the Corvallis show. State meet action, which began Friday, March 11th and continued through March 12th in Gill Colloseum at Corvallis, saw the state’s 208 best wrestlers compete for 13 top awards. Lynn Winchester, at 191 lbs., lost only his final match as he placed second in state. It was the best showing of a Sandy High Wrestler in recent years. The other Pioneers also did well, especially Terry Spahr and Bud Skipper. Other Pioneer wrestlers were: Joe Harrell, Bob Cunningham, Ken Dagliesh, Dan Sandercock, Brian Nelson, Larry Meyer, MerritSchilling, Leslie Connell, Pete Darr, Rod Heiser, Terry Spahr, Russ Caba, John Nelson, Carlton Pope, Roger Bigelow, Norman Stauffer, Hal Polivka, Jim Melton, Mark Snethen, Charles Leathers, Carl Castor, Glenn Strickland, Bob Winchester, Dennis Cutsforth, Jerry Isakson, Ken Strickland, A1 Olson, Dave Opperman, Bob Henselman, Leroy Eblen, Roy Farmer, Carroll Platz, David 21iemer, Art Skipper, Lynn Winchester, Ed Shook. 90 Front: B.
