Bert, as the first exchange student that Sandy High has ever had the privilege of having, we owe you much. You have been an inspiration to us all. We have learned many things about your country and have become very fond of you. It has been a pleasure working with you and gaining your friendship. We hope you will be able to come to visit us again, sometime in the future. We also hope that in the near future another group of classes will have the pleasure of knowing and working with another exchange student, as we have with you. I, DWIGHT TAYLOR, being of sound mind and body will all my pencils and five's to all my teachers. I'm just as generous as they are! I, JON TORREY, due to my advanced state of destitution, can only will my 20-20 vision to a person who is neither here nor Darr, and couldn't see Tarantula Ghoul without his contact lenses and bifocals, if she were perched on the end of his proboscis! I, SPARKY VALBERG, being of sound mind and body, will to Sandy Union High an old set of car keys to put on a hook in the office's key box to make it look like someone was rule abiding enough to turn his keys in. I, LAURA WATSON, will my naturally curly eyelashes to anyone who uses eyelash curlers. I, DICK WERNER, will my stubborness to the next unlucky person who wants it. I, BARBARA WHITLOCK, will my ability to debate with a certain person to another certain person who can convince this certain person. I, DIANE WILLIAMS, will my ability to cry to Judy Mills, but of course she cries just as much and as often as 1 do, so 1 leave it to Nevada for irrigation. I, MARIE WOLF, will my position as Treasurer of Dancing Majorettes to any girl who will take it. Sandy fans were treated to a perfect season on the home floor—as the Pioneers were un- beatable in the SUHS gym. Altogether they won ten straight at home end lost the only two regular season games at Clackamas and Neahkahnie after easily beating both teams earlier. At the state tournament, the Pioneers started with a rush to upset favored Jefferson, 59- 50 then fell to superior height in losing to Klamath Falls and North Salem. Over-all, Sandy finished the year with a fine 21-4 record, and with eight returning letter- men should field another strong team next year. BILL HENSELMAN JIM BARTLEY ROGER HOFFMAN LYLE SCHWARTZ GENE SEARLS BOB HOLT JOHN LUDI MICK BYRD Sandy UNIVERSITY OF OREGON, Ebgene (Special)—Underrated Sandy, getting 38 points from its capable H-bomPers, Ed Hoffman and Bill Henselman, toppled Jefferson’s Portland champions, 59-50, as the State A-l High School Basketball Tournament opened on an ex- citing note at McArthur Court Tuesday night. Sandy’s unexpected but thor- oughly earned success followed a nip-and-tuck struggle in Tourney Scores (First round) Klamath Falls 41, Astoria It Sandy 5t, Joftarson 50 which defending champion Klamath Falls clung tenacious- ly to a slim lead and repelled Astoria, ranked No. 1 in all polls, 41-39. A crowd of 6.006 screeched as a long swisher by Astoria’s Gordon Scott, which would have tied the score, was ruled a split-second too late by the official timer.. The enthusiastic audience gave Sandy’s Wilco League champions a standing ovation as they took the play away from favored Jefferson, lead- ing from the moment Hensel- man's good fake and layup made tne score 10-8 late in the first quarter. Henselman, 6-foot senior, and Hoffman, 6-1 junior, poured in jump shots from all angles and broke away for lay- ins, too. Coach- Ken Servas’ Pi- oneers stole the ball frequently and often outrebounded the Portland champions. Hoffman wound up with 22 points, Henselman with 16. m The 26-g a m e tournament buckles downjjo all-day busi- ness Wednesday, with six more first-round contests on menu, beginning at 9 o'clock. The underdog victors con- verted 21 of 34 free throws, and three Jeff players—Terry Baker, Vic Ellis and Mickey Hergert — fouled out in the final quarter. Jeff Hits at .300 Clip The Democrats manufac- tured two more field goals, hitting on 21 of 70 tries for a .300 mark, but collected on only 8 of 19 foul shots. Henselman found the range on 6 of 12 field shots and 4 of 9 free throws. Hoffman hit 8 for 19 from the field, 6jor 8 at the black mark. Sandy employed an .effective Drubs Jefferson zone defense, and Jeff didn’t connect consistently froqt -out or rebound adequately, even though it finished with a 45-36 edge in retrieves. Henselman dragged down 11 rebounds and Hoffman 10 for Sandy. Slender Will Brown picked off 18 for Jeff. The crowd warmed to the fray as Sandy sank its first eight free throws for an 8-7 lead, then moved ahead on its first field basket, by Hensel- man. Almost immediately, Henselman turned the trick again, jumping one home from the left side. The crowd, cheer- ing for the smaller school, was electrified. Little Howard Bjork’s two free throws and a jumper and hook in rapid succession by Hoffman more than offset two buckets by Brown as the Pio- neers made the count 18-12 by first period’s end. Hoffman dropped in a jump- er from the key and scored off the fast break as Sandy soared ahead, 22-12, and then the two H-bombers stretched the dif- ference to its ultimate,. 15 points, at 35-20, with 1:33 re- maining in the first half. Baker and Brown enabled Jeff to close within 11, 37-26, by in- termission. After the half, with Baker checking Hoffman, the Demos fought hack into contention. Ellis, Hergert and Brown scored as Johnny Neeley’s Portlanders whittled their defi- cit to just five points, 44-39, by third period’s end. Jeff Cuts Deficit to Four But Sandy wasn’t to be de- nied its upset. Big Lyle Schwartz contributed a free throw as Ellft fouled out at the final chapter’s outset. Her- gert moved Jeff the closest it ever came, four points, 45-41, on a jump shot from the left. Then Henselman sank a free throw, and the same Hensel- man drove under, faked and tanked a short jump. This was 48-41, with 5:12 to play. Hergert, a scrapper, fouled out right after that. Hoffman converted a free throw, then hit a short jump, before little Clauis Nickleberry interrupted for Jeff. When Henselman drove un- der for another layup, for 53-43, and Baker fouled out on the play, with 3:20 left, the death knell sounded for the Demos. Baker and Brown tallied 15 points each to lead Jeff scor- ing. After the 38-point outburst! bv . the Hoffman - Henselman] Combination, Sandy’s high was' 16 by Guard Doug Wills. JefTerSSn s uermse was a bombshell. Hoffman produced 17 of his points in the first half, when Sandy’s upset, in final reck- oning, was forged. The Pioneers, representing a school which grew into A-l classification only this year, shot .422 from the field, sink-1 ing 19 of 45 attempts. But it) was at the foul line, even more] that Sandy prevailed. Sandy’s rooters served noj tice that they had a bundle o| talent, too, when they put 3(j dancing majorettes on the floor at halftime. They backed by a lively jazz band, celebrated the 37-26 Sandy lead with gusto and en- tertained the 6,006 opening night fans royally. Pioneer Coach Happy Ken Servas of Sandy, the first coach carried off thirj state tournament’s floor in a good many years, was without doubt the calmest of the Sandy Pioneers after the unsung Dis- trict 2 champions knocked Jefferson right out of tha championship contention in the -second game of the opening round of the 41st state playoff. “I have two of the finest kids iu the state (Ed Hoffman and .Sill Henselman) and nobody ■-olieves me,’’.Servas said in his dressing room without any particular show of emotion. ’• “We’ve won 16 in a row now, and we won them because the team tries hard, and delivers, too,” Servas, who is coaching his first tournament team went on, “I thought we could stop Baker (Terry, the Jefferson ace), and Henselman thought so too, and he did a wonderful job.” Neely Speaks Tersely Servas also had considerable praise for two of his guards, Doug Wills and Mick Byrd. “Both of them had the flu all .week and weren’t anywhere near normal Monday,” he said, “but both played very well.” Jefferson’s John Neeley wrapped up Jefferson’s game in one sentence, “they were one step ahead of us all night, on offense, defense, loose balls, and everything else that counts ” March 17, 1959 CHAMPIONSHIP FIRST RO’JND Osme 2 2-1 Sandy (59) FO-FGA FT-FTA REB PF TP Bill Henselman, f 6-12 L-9 11 3 16 Ed Hoffman, f 8-19 6-8 10 3 22 Lyle Schwnrtz, c 1-1 3-7 6 3 5 Howard BjTk, g 0-1 3-3 li 3 3 Doug Wills, g 3-10 la-6 2 1 10 Roger Hoffman, c 1-1 1-1 1 0 3 John Ludi, c 0-0 0-0 0 0 0 Gene Searles, g 0-0 0-0 0 1 0 Mick Byrd, g 0-1 0-0 2 2 0 TOTALS 19-15 21-31 36 16 QUARTERS: Sandy 18 19 7 15—59 Jefferson 12 lii 13 11—50 1-1 Jefferson (50) FO-FGA FT-FTA REB PF TP Vic Sills, f -11 1-1 10 5 7 Terry Baker, f 5-13 5-8 7 5 15 Wilbert Brown, c 7-12 1-L 18 3 15 Clauis Nickleberry, g 2-17 0-1 1 0 I Mickey Hergert, g 2-10 0-1 1 5 u Mike Barnes, f 0-1 0-2 1 2 0 Herb Washburn, g 1-3 0-0 3 1 ? Nickleberry found the range on a long two-hander but Henselman shifted his way through the de- fense for two and was fouled on the play by Baker. Baker left the game with his fifth personal at this point and Henselman added EUGENE (Special) — The giant has fallen! Sandy’s Pioneers proved them- selves under A-l fire here at Mc- Arthur Court last night as they battled to a stunning 59-50 upset win over Jefferson’s tough Dem- ocrats. The game, part of the first night action witnessed by 6,006 fans, was hot and heavy throughout and saw Ken Servas’ Clackamas county crew roll to big leads in th lirst half and finally have to hangj.qft or the final margin of victory. Sandy, possibly “a year away” according to coach Servas, found itself “adopted” by the Eugene crowd, and was rewarded after pulling ahead 22-12 by a standing ovation. If any player or players have to be singled out, it has to be Ed Hoffman and Bill Henselman. Hoffman burned the net in the first half and Henselman carried the load when the going ot rough toward the finish. Wills hit from the charity stripe John Neely’s PH. champion Demos jumped out to a quick 5-2 'before Hoffman and Doug to cut it to 5-4. Terry Baker got the three-point lead again on a solo layin at 7-4. From there on to the close of the first half, the Pioneers were rough. Hoffman hit four consecu- tive free throws to give Sandy an 8-7 lead but Baker evened things out at 8 with a free toss. Henselman hit two long pushers from the side, Bjork two free throws and Roger Hoffman a bucket, lessened on Jeff’s side only by Wilbert Brown’s tipin for a commanding 16-10 advantage. Brown and Hoffman traded buck- ets shortly before the end of the first stanza and Sandy was out in front 18-12. The Pioneers threatened to run the flustered Demos completely out of the gym in the second quar- ter, building a lead at one time to 15 points. With 4:47 left in the first half, Sandy led 25-16 on Hoffman’s bas- ket and a Henselman free throw. Baker hit for Jeff but Wills used a driving layin to salvage a 27-18 margin. At this point Henselman and Hoffman propelled the Pio- neers to their biggest lead of the night. CHAMPIONSHIP QUARTER FINALS Helselman hit a follow shot and Hoffman a jumper to shoot the gap to 31-20 after Baker canned one for Jefferson. Hoffman hit an- other layin for the fattest bulge of the night at 35-20. Washburn, Brown and Baker then hit for Jeff but Sandy coun- tered with a Wills solo drive and the Pioneers left the court at half- time holders of a 37-26 lead over the fourth-ranked team in the state. One look at the intermission sta- tistics told the whole story. Sandy had a fabulous .520 13-25 shooting percentage and hit 11 of 12 free throws. Jeff shot a so-so .306 (11- 36) and made good on four of six charity casts. The Pioneers out- rebounded their taller Portland foe also, 18-12.' Jefferson showed signs of a comeback in the third canto, out- scoring Sandy 13-7 which cut the ;p lead to a close 44-39. Vic Ellis had seven of those comeback points but fouled out midway through the quarter. Schwartz opened Sandy fourth quarter scoring with a free tos for a 45-39 lead but Jeff rebound- ed his missed second attempt. a later free shrow for a 54-43 San- dy lead. Jeff’s Brown hit two quickies and the lead was cut to only seven at 54-47. Upset Second of Night Wills made three points from the foul line as Jefferson pressed hard and Henselman added an- other drive with 1:25 remaining in the test for a 59-47 lead. Jerry Henry and Brown put three more points between them for the Dem- ocrat total but it was all over and the Pioneers had pulled off the second upset of the night. The first game found Klamath Falls narrowly nip Astoria, the No. 1 team in the state by 41-39. Sandy will now face the Pelicans Thursday evening. High point honors for the game went to junior Ed Hoffman with 22, 17 in the opening half of play. Henselman accounted for 18 more, 11 in the second half to second Hoffman on the Sandy side. As usual, Terry Baker led the Demos with 16 followed by Will Brown with 14. _________________________ Halftime: Sandy 37, Jefferson 28. Attendance: 6,006.
