1953 CLASS PROPHECY On one cold foggy night in the year 1963, as the Bartley jet, named after the world's most famous jet pilot, John Bartley, landed at the airport in Sandy, Oregon, I, Shirley Winbinger, just back from Egypt, said good- bye to the two airplane hostesses, Beverly Linton and Barbara Banks, and walked into a town of mystery and adventure. As I walked out into the platform, two policemen, Lloyd Bridgmon and Karl Hartmann, were having a big argument in the center of a crowd of people. Making my way toward the crowd, I bumped into Lois Sherman. She told me that she was there gathering information on the big mystery for David Myers story for the Sandy Tribune. Before I could ask her what the mystery was, I became conscious of two tall men looking around the platform with magnify- ing glasses. After asking Lois who they were, I found them to be two of the world's most famous scientific detectives, John Malone and Gordon Nilsen. Their valuable assistants, who were also looking around for clues, were Jo Anne Chilton, Ingemar Stromberg, and Marjorie Suckow. Looking once more about the platform, I picked up my suitcase and started for the Blue Manor Hotel, owned by Joyce Bartlemay. Although the night was foggy, I could see a big, red, flashing arrow pointing toward a large brick building. As I walked up to the arrow, I could barely read the words under it. I believe it read something like this: If you think your time is near, come to see your FRIENDLY undertaker, Tony Carlson. See the special embalming services performed by Skip Hoar, and the exquisite style of our lady beautician, Willa Waugh. Only one complication—you MUST have your death certificate signed by our secretary, Violet McCormick, before you enter our door. After reading that advertisement and remembering the commotion at the airport, I walked down the street more cautiously than ever. As I neared the main part of town, several neon show bills caught my eye. I was surprised to learn that several of my school mates were reaching stardom. Some of the bills read: LIFE OF MARILYN MONROE , starring Bobbie Mount and Edward Hopp, Academy Award Winner of 1963. Next Friday, the 13th, the Sandy Theater Presents the Three World Distinguished GLOBE TROTTERS , Melva Hill, Shirley Meyer, and Marjorie Cooper. ZIGFIELD FOLLIES OF 1963 presents-- The Singing Tap Dancers , Pat Downey and Sheila Jones, singing We've Got Our Men. The Tumbling Tumblers, Barbara King, Betty Hurst, and Tom Gregson. While I was reading one of these show bills, I suddenly heard a terrifying noise behind me. I thought for sure that the police were chasing the gangster, but as the noise came closer, I found it to be only Tom Weisen and Wally Maxwell. It looked as if they were practicing for a midget car race. About a block from the hotel, I stopped at the Swedish Ballroom to have dinner. As I walked into the ballroom I met Maridine Crone. She told me that she was singing at the ballroom for a week before she went to
