MATH HELPERS The Math Helpers program gives high school students the opportunity to act as tutors for elementary students who are having difficulties in mathe- matics. Math helpers may earn academic credit for their as- sistance. The Middle School Spelling Bee competition determines the best speller in grades six through eight for the school year. Contestants for 1979 must not have passed beyond the eighth grade and must not have reached their sixteenth birth- day before June 7. Each competitor takes a written preliminary test to determine the 10-12 semifinalists in Sandy Creek. These semi-finalists then compete in an oral competition in a traditional spell down assembly program to determine the champion. Sandy Creek's champion for 1978 was Charlotte Reid. The champion competes in Syr- acuse with other representatives of Central New York in the Her- ald-Journal-American Spelling Bee in late April. The winner of that contest travels to Washington, D.C. for the Na- tional Spelling Bee in June. This year's semifinalists were Eileen Clerkin, Ralph Albrecht, David Engst, Scott Pearson, Charlotte Reid, David Bou- chard, Teresa Soule, Dawn Greenfield, Lynnette Bird- slow, Kathy Brewer, Kim Hal- dane, and Nancy Potter.
