FIRST ANNUAL YE RBOOK BA QUET , .n,,.,A. wi Q H F'- .4 The First Annual Yearbook Banquet was held on May 23, 1978, at 7:00 p.m., at the Braeloch Inn in Cazenovia, New York. It was planned by the organization's advisors in order to recog- nize the editors and staff of the 1978 SPADE. On this evening, special awards and certificates were presented to acknowledge those outstanding students who worked in the spring and fall either raising funds, or preparing the publication itself. With- out their diligence and cooperation, this event could not have been made possible. It is hoped that all future years will be as successful as 1978 and 1979, so that this occasion will remain an elegant and special tradtition at SCCS. MATH HELPERS The Math Helpers program gives high school students the opportunity to act as tutors for elementary students who are having difficulties in mathe- matics. Math helpers may earn academic credit for their as- sistance. The Middle School Spelling Bee competition determines the best speller in grades six through eight for the school year. Contestants for 1979 must not have passed beyond the eighth grade and must not have reached their sixteenth birth- day before June 7. Each competitor takes a written preliminary test to determine the 10-12 semifinalists in Sandy Creek. These semi-finalists then compete in an oral competition in a traditional spell down assembly program to determine the champion. Sandy Creek's champion for 1978 was Charlotte Reid. The champion competes in Syr- acuse with other representatives of Central New York in the Her- ald-Journal-American Spelling Bee in late April. The winner of that contest travels to Washington, D.C. for the Na- tional Spelling Bee in June. This year's semifinalists were Eileen Clerkin, Ralph Albrecht, David Engst, Scott Pearson, Charlotte Reid, David Bou- chard, Teresa Soule, Dawn Greenfield, Lynnette Bird- slow, Kathy Brewer, Kim Hal- dane, and Nancy Potter. The festivities, which welcomed the Class of 1978 back home , began with a pep rally 8th period on Friday and a bonfire and pizza party Friday night. Saturday morning, the Seniors held a pancake breakfast and apple fest. The profit was donated to a memorial fun for Bill Seweryneuk. After a car rally, Millie Russell, SCCS Senior, was crowned by her sister Tessie, the 1977 Homecoming Queen. Following the coronation, the S CC S football team played a tough game against Beaver River. The Comets lost 8-16, mainly because the Beavers scored a touchdown in the final minutes of play. The activities of the Homecoming Weekend were concluded by a Homecoming dance on Sat- urday night, which featured the Barry James Band. Qcwv Joni 45:5 Sub' Dx vzrvf Jo- qf's Sandy in TS AY . Very few matches were close in score, but all were packed full of excitement. Everyone involved in the wrestling pro- gram has worked furiously to attain their individual and team goals, usually with very little recognition. To rectify this, the 1979 Spade would like to extend its congratulations. The Varsity B team compiled an overall 5-4 record while chalking up im- pressive victories over Indian River and Thousand Islands. The program offers 30 major courses and enrolls approximately 1400 students. The BOCES curriculum provides courses in areas such as business, electronics, graphics, health services, cosmetology, food prepara- tion, metal fabrication, engine repair and maintenance, masonry and carpentry.
