1985 SPADE Sandy Creek, Central School Sandy Creek New York 13145 Volume 34 ' Dedication Mrs. Barbara Newton J :f' In honor of her 28th year of teaching at Sandy Creek Central School, it is with great pleasure that the 1985 Spade is dedicated to Mrs. Barbara Newton. Mrs. Newton began teaching at Sandy Creek in 1955. For 28 years she has taught Home Economics. With her expertise in nutrition, cooking, sewing and child care students have been able to learn skills which allow them to live as independent adults. During her years on the staff at Sandy Creek, Mrs. Newton has been a j.V. Cheerleader Advisor, an Adult Educa- tion teacher, a Girl Scout Leader, Class Advisor several times-most re- cently class of '82, a member of the Teacher's Association and consultant to many extracurricular organizations. Her desire to teach was inspired by her favorite Aunt Phillis, a Home Economics teacher, as well as by her father, a member of the Boards of Education in Cattaraugus County and at the State level. We are thankful for the inspiration they gave her and are indeed fortunate to have her here. Mrs. Newton, it is with great pride and deep respect that we, your students and friends, dedicate this yearbook to you, in recognition of your many years of guidance, patience, interest and concern for the students of Sandy Creek Central School. o Dedication 5500300306161 Title Page Dedication Introduction Classes Student Life Organizations Sports Faculty Ads Conclusion Table of Contents Page Number 1 2 4 5 57 65 93 115 131 140 Of Contents w ' V ,X it . t f f ti' Q 15 L 5 no 51 N if +3 I Mm- . . Carrying on an old tradition, the yearbook staff once again polled the Senior Class. We made some rather normal discoveries . . . As typical, Seniors' choices were made on the basis of Will it make my parents nuts? . Screwballs and Ghostbusters , movies condemned by critics as worthless trash having no plot, were chosen as the favorite movies. Depicting the cooperative, well adjusted attitude of this year's Senior class, We're not Gonna Take lt was picked as the favorite song. Groups chosen ranging from the wild Scorpions , partying Van Halen , and the more mellow sounds of Journey and Huey Lewis displayed the wide range of interesting personalities we have in our class. And last, but not least, three teachers were almost unanimously chosen as Class of 85's favorites. These honored few were Mr. Hunt, Mr. Schug, and Mr. Sorn- borger Qaffectionately known as Quincej. 1 o ' Classes Class Couple: Melissa Kuss and Thad Schug ,ad ' Best Dressed: Chris Ellis and Wendy Karod Most Athletic: Diana Leighton and Sam Washburn. Absent: Susanne Albrecht, Kirk Ellis and Fred Schug. The Class of '85 managed to accom- plish many things this year - other than a few memorable parties - which was rela- tively unheard of among former Senior Classes. Our first fund raiser of the year was the 300 Club which we managed suc- cessfully with the help of Mrs. Sherry Glazier. Although our first pizza sale was a flop, we switched restaurants and fol- lowed with two profitable pizza sales. In December the Seniors sponsored a well attended dance with 95X. Our dough was blown on three things: the jrfSr Prom, graduation announce- ments and caps and gowns, and of course, the infamous Senior trip. For those Seniors who can't remember too clearly - we went to Washington D.C. and Virginia Beach. And last, but not least, the Seniors got their nerf-court!! tThis is also known as the Senior Study Hall or Senior Privi- leges by teachers and underclassmenj Many thanks goes out to the High School Student Council for providing us with funds to buy furniture. These included sub sales, a Christmas items sale, a Valentine's Day Dance, and they also planned a tee- shirt and button sale. The usual ac- tivities such as car racing, chugging, chasing the opposite sex, and dipping also took place, but failed to raise much money for the Senior trip. They also plan on at- tending the prom and are certain to make it a worthwhile experience. Classes Class of 1987 fax? A! Most everyone knows that BOCES is a vocational ftechnical school, but students who do not attend BOCES usually have no idea what goes on at the school besides classes. There are four clubs at BOCES: VICA, DECA, HOSA, and FFA. These clubs enable students to compete in the areas which they study. Students also go on field trips. If you are a cosmetology student you may visit your product distributor. Nursing students visit Oswego Hospital. In the spring a trades fair is held in the mall where displays from each ofthe classes are set up. During the trades fair the mechanics class raffles off a car which they renovated. Of course, the best part of a BOCES student's day is that wonderful bus ride. fThat is, if you enjoy food fights, spit wads, screaming . . . Under the direction of our new English teacher, Miss Kelley, the Comet's Tale Staff had a fun-filled and exciting year. They visited the Pulaski Democrat on a field trip and sold M8:Ms for their activity. One reason for M8:Ms sales was to cover the cost of print- ing the Comet's Tale, which, starting with the December issue was laid out and com- pleted by Staff members. Spe- cial features this year included a 'Dear Comet's Tale' advice column, extensive music coverage, and a brand- new skiing column for winter issues. Last summer four students, jim Rowell-newspaper, Dawn Greenfield, Melissa Kuss, and Erin Robbins- yearbook, attended the School Press Institute held at Syra- cuse University on July 22-27. Each day started at 8:00 with breakfast, followed by classes in which the students learned how to put together their newspaper or yearbook. There was an hour lunch break followed by more class- es. His father, Scott, is an engineer, and his mother, Lise, is a medical secretary. An- ders also has 2 older brothers, Dennis and Christian , living in Denmark. When asked what he thought of our school and town, Anders said it was friend- ly and small . . . kind of an old fashioned town. At SCCS Anders was a member of the var- sity football team where he used his soccer skills in becoming the team's place kicker. Anders also joined the varsity basketball team and had a great time learning the sport. In the spring Anders plans to find out how to play the great American past time and join the baseball team. ln Denmark Anders belongs to a sports club- Sollerod, and is on the following teams: handball, darts, badmitton, tennis, golf, cricket, and his favorite - soccer. Commenting about school Anders said that in comparison to students in Denmark, American students don't have much fun and are too serious in both studies and sports. This year Anders has been a guest of the Maurice Hurd family of Sandy Creek. Yoko Fujita's home is Osaka, japan. Her family consists of: her father, Keigo, who is a doctor, her mother, Mie, and two sisters, To- moko and Iunko. Yoko has thoroughly en- joyed her stay in the United States especially our winter season. Yoko discovered that sledding and playing King on the Moun- tain were great ways to pass time during the winter. Speech has been a difficulty for Yoko but she says American education is definitly eas- ier. Yoko also comments that the students in japan are much more serious concerning their studies and japanese students respect their teachers. Yoko's favorite activity at SCCS is being on the varsity volleyball team where she is a key player with fantastic serving and spik- ing abilities. When Yoko returns to japan she will have another year of high school to complete. Af- ter high school Yoko plans to attend college to study foreign languages. The Keith Tompkin family of Redfield has hosted her stay this year. A guest of the Fred Potter family, Martha Rendon's home is in the city of Monclova, Mexico. There lives her family: one brother, her mother and her father. Martha has re- cently graduated from high school and will continue her education at college where she hopes to study International Relations. Here at SCCS Martha likes the fact that you can choose your subjects to study and that you have free periods during the day. She also enjoys participating on the junior varsity volleyball team. When asked what she thought of our small town, Marth said, I miss going to the movies and the city life, but the farm is okay for ten months. This year's team was led by four seniors: Chris Ellis, Tim McDou- gal, Mike Gilbert, and Thad Schug, who provided the experience and leadership needed for a successful season. One of the most memorable games this season took place at the Oswego tournament where the Comet underdogs made it to the finals and won by one point for the championship. As a team, the J.V.'s progress was eratic this year, the record hardly reflects the talents and abilities of the team members. There were many close games which the team lost by less than 5 points, or in overtime play. On the other hand, Coach Pen- nock observed a great deal of indi- vidual improvement citing Ben Halsey, a first year player, as a prime example of this fact. The highlight of this season oc- curred at South Lewis in which the J.V.s came back from a 12 point def- icit and won by a five point margin. Consolation trophies were also won by the j.V. boys at the Oswego Tip Off Tournament and the Water- town Christmas Tournament.
