CTOE Cover design by CHRIS THOMPSON Janet Yingling July 17, 1970 - January 9, 198' DEDICATIC Janet will be most remembered by her friends as a caring and kind person as well as an excellent student. She loved unicorns, science fiction, and anything to do with the movie “Star Wars”. She was a quiet person and kept to herself most of the time. Very few people got to see the real Janet. I was one of the lucky ones. I would like to dedicate this yearbook, along with the students and staff of Sandwich High School, to Janet Yingling. Yvonne Freeman t go orever they say, so many ways, and say goodbye, memories and makes true Touching our At times we This brings bac us sigh. , rilU{’ ■ The smiles you gave the hearts you touched, Never has anyone quite done so much. For you, Janet Yingling, we’re so glad you were born, Now you rest peacefully with the lovely unicorns. 2 3 A LOOK AT THE YEAR 1987-88 When I think about the year behind I laugh and wonder why of why all good things have to end and why we must say good-bye? THE COACHES AND BULL DANNEWITZ ALWAYS SAID. WE MUST MAKE THE INVESTMENT'. THIS QUOTE WAS DESIGNED TO PROVE THAT TIME SPENT ON THE PRACTICE FIELD WOULD BE THE WAY TO VICTORY. THIS WAS GOING TO BE THE PERFECT THEME FOR 1987 THE SENIORS REALIZED AT THE START OF THE SEASON THAT THIS WAS THEIR LAST YEAR IN HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL. CONSEQUENTLY THEY WOULD HAVE TO SHOW THAT THEY WERE WORTHY OF THEIR NAME. THE SANDWICH INDIANS. THE FIRST GAME AGAINST THE BURLINGTON CENTRAL ROCKETS ENDED AFTER FOUR WELL FOUGHT QUARTERS. UNFORTUNATELY. SANDWICH LOST 10 TO 0. HOMECOMING WAS DEFINITELY A DIFFERENT STORY. THE INDIANS RAN AWAY WITH A GREAT VICTORY DESTROYING THE COMETS WITH A HUMILIATING SCORE OF 32 TO 8. THE INDIANS ALSO DEFEATED DWIGHT 8 TO 0. WILMINGTON CAME TO INDIAN TERRITORY UNDEFEATED BUT THIS DID NOT SHADOW ANY DOUBTS OF A VICTORY FOR SANDWICH. SANDWICH HAD SUFFERED THROUGH A ROUGH SEASON HOWEVER CAME TOGETHER AS A TEAM TO PRODUCE THE BEST AND MOST EXCITING VICTORY OF THE SEASON THE 1987 FOOTBALL SEASON ENDED IN THE REAPER STADIUM. TOWNSPEOPLE OF SANDWICH AND PLANO HAD AWAITED THIS GAME IN WHICH BOTH TEAMS PLAYED STRICTLY FROM PRIDE. LATER IN THE GAME. AN INDIAN KICKOFF FORCED THE REAPERS TO PUNT. SHAWN JUDD BLOCKED THE PUNT CAUSING THE BALL TO ROLL INTO THE END ZONE FOR A SAFETY GIVING SANDWICH AN 8 TO 6 WIN. THE SEASON DID NOT END AS THE INDIANS HAD PLANNED. HOWEVER THERE WAS A LESSON TO BE LEARNED. SANDWICH FINISHED THEIR SEASON WITH FOUR ALL CONFERENCE PLAYERS: TOM BARKER. (CENTER}. SEAN EGGENBERGER. (DEFENSIVE NOSEGUARD). JOE KEETON. A Season To Remember The 1987-88 Basketball season began with a secret optimism for a great year We had 9 of 11 players returning from a respectable 15-11 season the year before. However, an adjustment had to be made with the addition of a new head coach The piesenson practices were a little shaky but within time we came together as a team. A short while later, we captur' d our first tournament championshp We had won our own Thanksgiving Tournament, but felt th.it we had not been honestly tested. Our first real test came against a talented Yorkville squad which was considered to be a candidate. for the conference championship. We prevailed with j close victory and began to set our sights on the Plano Christmas Tnumamont. We entered the tournament as the number one seed and won the first game easily. The next two games were not as easy to win. It took a strong comeback in the second half to defeat a fiery Harl-ville team and a solid offensive game to turnback o balanced Harvard squad. The next game was to be the championshp against our rival Newark. This tfurn had the state's leading scorer. Our outstanding defensive effort along with a patient offense overcame the strong Newark team for the 25th Annual Plano Christmas Tournament Championship. The undefeated season continued on, but not without close calls. It took two frve-throws. in the last seconds, by |on Monti to defeat a very patient Wilmington offense We needed an all-state performance by Scott Schafer to defeat Shabbona. a (team considered one of the best in the area. The regular season ended with a heated victory over Wilmington. In this game, tempers flared but the Indians cooler heads prevailed to earn a victory and finish the regular season with a perfect 25-0 record! It was on to the Shabbona regional, which was widely recognized as one of the toughest in the state Our first opponent was conference runner-up Yorkville. This game was played with the intensity of a regional championship with us coming out on top. ending Yorkviiles season. The regional semifinal wus against a tough Plano team but once again u stringent defense and a balanced offense over-cnme the Reapers for the regional championship we faced the Norseman of Newark again fora tournament title. It was a closely fought contest throughout the entire game, with us finally puling away for an 11 point victory and the first regional hasketbal championship in Sandwich history. the next step in our undefeated season was me Princeton Sectional. The first team we played at Princeton was a small, but potent offensive Toulon team. After jumping out to a large first half lead, we held on after a vigorous comeback by Toulon. For the sectional championship wc played n toll, well-rounded, well-balanced. Spring Valley Hall team who be3 state-ranked Ohio to reach the championship. On this night in March we played our host game all year. We beat Hall in resounding fashion and came away with the sectional title The victory was overshadowed by the deaths of two men within the community and for that reason the game was dedicated to them Our next game would be in the Dekalb Supersectional as a member the Sweet 16. We played against a Forreston team that most of us knew little about. This night, unlike the Hall game, was not our night. Despite an outstanding performance by Pat Quinlan our undefeated season hod come to on abrupt end and our dream of going downstair fall one game short With tears in our ryes, and disappointment on our faces we returned to the high school to comemorate a season unliko any other Despite the sorrow, the anger, and the pain we all felt, we will always know that this was a season to reinember. -Mike Hesscnlierger- FRESH SCPH EASPETDALL Bottom Row I. to R: Rob Figgins. Argh!” A little knowledge is a dangerous thing especially in the hands of a budding pschoan-alyst! Laurie Huntington is 19. bright, and impersonally scientific. Her family has its faults, but it takes Laurie to psychoanalyze them to death. In no time, she’s turned the house into an experimental maze, and has the family wandering around with thermometers in their mouths to determine their ENERGY PEAKS. Laurie administers one of her ink blot tests to some of her mother’s friends who are extremely important to her father getting a much needed bank loan and matters explode. The ladies leave in a huff and when younger brother Wally finds Laurie’s case book, with all her family laid bare, its time to fight back. The whole family decides to carry to extremes some of Laurie’s pet theories at 2:00 A.M., just as Laurie has returned home from a late date with her boyfriend. Don Flowers, Blondie, and Chad Bohnstedt added to the realism and humorous quality of the play. Mark (Kurt Corman) and his romantic interest Laurie (Deena Alabastro) solve their differences on the front porch. Isn’t that special? While trying to solve their parents problems Joan (Lana Hinshaw) and Wally (Brandon Shelton) ask the proverbial question: “Why do children have to be born with parents?” 72 The struggle ensues as Sid and Ted, with the help of’ their wives. So. the computer club thought it would be appropriate to learn more about IBM computers. We wunted to find out how they are made, how they aro used, and what careers are directly involved with them. In order to explore these questions, we are planning an excursion to the IBM facilities in Rockford. In addition to this, one member brought in his computer. This computer is portable and can tulk with the aid of a talking word processor. We have also learned to use various computer programs for the IBM computer. These include Electric Desk. Turbo Pascal. Fontasy. and Typo Right. Some of the games we learned to play aro: Freddy's Rescue Roundup. Verso. Word Seeking, and Solitairo. Student Council Student Council does various activities throughout the school year. In our years head, here at S.H.S., 1 think we will learn to grow, mature, and accept the fact that the good things in life just don’t come to you unless you believe and try. We, freshmen, came into this school not knowing anyone. We made friends with the upperclassmen and realized that they were the same as us once. We will continue to meet more new and exciting people and to grow less frightened. What lies ahead for the class of 1991??-----A friendly and intelligent future!!! My stay in Sandwich w ill remain in my mind as a special memo ry for the rest of my life. When I first arrived I felt lost but. the students and the teachers hel| ed me understand for example. American slang as well as a host of other cultural differences. The most beautiful thing I saw in the; U.S. was snow . 1 loved Christmas with decorations, cookies, and pies! Spending Christmas in the U.S. was great. My expectations for the United States mainly came from the movie I had seen. Girls Just Want To Have Fun” and Sixteen Candles” were not good indicators of how life really was in the U.S. however I still found the country beautiful and exciting. My first impression of Sandwich included the picture of a small and rural town. My hometow n is the size of Chicago and the population of Sandwich is equal to the population of my school! I really enjoyed the opportunity to see the country life-style and fresh air atmosphere that Sandwich offered. The Raymonds. Brumunds. and Sextons made my stay an exciting and beautiful experience. They were wonderful to me and meant more to me than I can say. I love them, will miss them, and thank them for event hing. I would also like thank all of the students for the warm and fantastic welcome they gave me. I found the never-ending questions about my country. India and my hometown. 11 yd era baa very interesting. Some of the questions included. Do you live in huts? . Do you have a bicycle? , and the most memorable. Do you own an elephant? I enjoyed answering these questions and will always remember the reactions I got when responding to them. 1 would like to say a special thanks to Mr. Close and Mr. |ur-kowski for their patience and special welcome they showed me. 1 am grateful to my teachers for their kindness and help. Three cheers for Sandwich High School! Hip Hip Hooray!! When you read this. I will have left, however. I want you to remember that I love you all and will miss you a lot. You have been wonderful. I know in the future you will make other exchange students as happy as I was. Keep in touch! Love. Geeta Sood It is with a little bit of mostalgia that I leave this town. On the other hand, it is with a lot of pride and with the conviction that you positively influenced me that I return to Quebec, where I'll be ambassador of Sandwich. To all of you. I wish what we all want; happiness. Don't forget however, that you have to look for it inside of you. We make our own happiness. Nothing is easy ... But how a great amount of joy feels one who w ins the race after an honest fight! Happiness and )oy are assured to all of vou because you are Indians.
