Every float was unique in its own way. which made the winners difficult decision for the judges to make. The winning float was the sophomore’s Knock’em Goofy theme. In second place was the senior's float carrying Dumbo complete with flapping ears. In third place was the Victory Kingdom junior float followed by the freshman with their Dwarf the Coalers theme. 22 TH€ GRM€ 1. Pal Hendron leading the Indians to victory. 2. Consequently, the team suffered from inexperience at the beginning of the season but as the season progressed, so did the playing ability. In the opener the Indians travelled to Melrose Park to play the Broncos of Walther Lutheran. They couldn 7 overcome the inexperience and were beaten. The following week against Marengo the Indians displayed a great deal of improvement but came up short scoring fourteen fourth quarter points. The Indians won the Homecoming contest but lost the next two games. Their record was now 1-4. In week six the Indians played an almost perfect game when they took on one of their Route 34 rivals, the Yorkvllle Foxes. It was the turning point of the season. The indians went on to win the rest of their games beating Wilmington, Plano, and Seneca. The defense helped the Indians throughout the whole season. They went up against four of the top fifteen rated quarterbacks in the Chicago area. The offense proved that they could put points on the board in the Yorkville and Coal city games. In these two games combined the Indians scored seventy points. Great year Indians. TAl€NT SHOW SCHOLASTIC BOWL TCAM BflCCALAURCATC The baccalaureate ceremony is held each year in honor of the Sandwich High School seniors. Rev. Oregon Mayer from the Salem Lutheran church gave the baccalaureate address this year. The ceremony centered around thoughts of seniors as they prepare to go forth into the future with hope and faith. This is only the second year that Sandwich high school has participateI in the 1-8 scholastic bowl com[ etition. This is a five person team competition where points are earned by answering toss up and bonus questions from the categories of Science. Math. Social Studies. Humanities. Fine arts, and a miscellaneous category which includes Home Economics. Current Events. Theater. Drivers Education. Shop. Etc. An electronic device is used to determine who will be the first person to answer the toss up question. If answered correctly then that team gets 30 seconds to work together to answer the lx)nus question which has multiple parts. If some parts of the bonus question were answered incorrectly, then the captain of the other team may give answers for those parts and earn Mints for the opfKising team. The teams earn 10 points for each toss up question answered correctly and up to 20 points for a bonus question depending upon how many parts of the bonus were answered correctly. This year's team had an outstanding record of 7 wins and 2 losses. They were undefeated going into the conference meet but lost a close match in the second round to Coal City'. They then defeated Dwight to take 3rd in the 1-8 conference tournament. The team also com [feted in the first ever state scholastic bowl tournament. SUSIE DIERZEN MARY WILEY 140 FOREIGN Karla Jowett Melbourne, Australia Rotary exchange Student “G’Day Mute!” I have heard this phrase more often than any other since I arrived in Sandwich in January. The never-ending questions about Paul Hogan. Kangaroo's and Koala's, have really surprised and at times amused me. The warm welcome I received when I came to Sandwich was fantastic. Every one was friendly and helped me through my ‘culture shock '. I really didn 7 know what to expect, after all I was being sent to a small town called, (of all names}. Sandwich. My friends in Australia thought my trip to the U.S. would be fantastic. School would be like ‘The Breakfast Club”, or one long episode of Family Ties . Well. I'm afraid life in America is not exactly as it appears in the shows, but I'm having more fun than I ever imagined. Keep up the fantastic work Sandwich! You really know how to welcome someone ‘new' and accept them. I hope there are many more happy exchanges in and out of Sandwich. Illinois. U.S.A. “See ya later Mate!” - Karla Jowett- EXCHANGE STUDENTS Marola Ralmes Madrid, Spain Rendall exchange Student It is hard to describe my year in the IJ.S. A. because I had some hard times and some happy times. During my stay in Sandwich. I learned not only English but things about a country and its people completely different from mine. I am definitely going to miss all of you and wish you good luck in the future. I would like to thank my family and teachers for all the things they have done for me and all times they helped me with my studies. When you read this. I will be back in Spain however. I want to tell you that you are welcome to my home if you decide to visit Spain. I love you all and hope to see you again sometime. Love. Marola Heidi Nybo Stranda, Norway A.F.S. exchange Student Here I am at the end of my year as an A.F.S. student! It has been a great year with much excitement and many new experiences. I arrived in Sandwich in the middle of August with realistic expectations for the year. Now I look back at the year and have several memories and experience both good and bad however. I would not have changed anything. I have learned a lot about myself and other people. I have traveled and seen many different states and most importantly, have lived as a “real American ” for the year. I am from a small town in Norway and therefore experienced no difficulties adjusting to the size of Sandwich. I have had to adjust however, to new customs and traditions and have had to be open to new activities and hobbies that do not exist in Stranda. Norway. Comparing the U.S. to Norway is difficult because the U.S. is so much larger than Norway and is filled with people of different nationalities. I believe it is the mixture of different people that make the U.S. so interesting. My host family, the Cold mans, and my friends have made my stay enjoyable. interesting, and exciting. They have been wonderful and have meant more to me than I can say and I love them all. I hope I will return to Sandwich someday, but during my absence 1 want you to remember that I love you all and realize without family and friends. I would not have been so happy. Thank you for everything and please keep in touch. Love. Heidi 141 Autographs Autographs Autographs Autographs Autographs Autographs Autographs mWALS WORTH PUBLISHING COMPANY MARCCLINC MIMOl'RI USA
