Mrs. Graf served as a secretary in our school system for 22 years. She displayed great dedication to her work and was always willing to lend a helping hand wherever it was needed. She was particularly helpful in aiding the students with clubs and organizations within the High School. Mrs. Graf was cheerful, caring, and enthusiastic. In short, she was a very wonderful person. We all miss her, but will never forget her. 1. Are we 1, or are we 1? 2. How's this for an original Wacky pose? 3. Just another funfilled day at ol1 Sandwich High. 4. I'm afraid to look, but I think that this is the wrong jacket. 8. Suzie, I was just kidding. Of course you can ride in my car. 9. What's the matter, guys? Never seen a camera before? 5 WELCOME BACK Spirit week started our Homecoming with 5 days of craziness. T-shirt and hat day started the week with other events including movie star day, backwards day and orange and black day. A super Saturday finished the week's excitement. The parade was well attended. All of the students worked hard to finish their floats before the deadline. The Seniors captured first place with an enormous float, Puff . Overcoming the panic of a stolen float, the Juniors placed second. The Freshmen and Sophomores placed 3rd and 4th. 1. Junior Float. 2. Freshmen Float 3. Sophomore Float 4. S.H.S. marching band 5. I'm the 1979 Miss Scrubbing Bubble. J J J J' J J J J J J The Homecoming this year was a great success plus a super victory for Sandwich. The chilly weather started everyone off in a rowdy mood. The parade was led by Marshall Russell King, a long time fan of the Sandwich Indians. Large crowds of loyal fans attended the game and celebrated the victory at the dance. The band Tamarack , with their wide variety of music, made the dance a really smashing event. The high point of the evening came with the crowning of the 1978 Homecoming King and Queen, Juniors, Ron Beardsley and Diane Fanning. 0 «r HOMECOMING 1978 1. The enthusiastic parade made the team eager to win. The final score was 20-12, our first Homecoming victory in 3 years. Because of our victory, the dance was well attended. Coach Hutchins said this about the game, “Because of the efforts of Brunoehler, Benson Ei-senberg, and VanPelt, Braidwood was unable to score in the 1st half. We piled up a 14-0 lead with great running by Strever, Stratton, and Heywood. The 2nd half continued with Braidwood scoring 2 TD's to our 1. With time running out, Stratton made a game-saving tackle at the 3-yard line to insure our 20-12 victory. J J -h J 10 1. We're gonna whomp and stomp all over you!!! 2. WINTER TIME Quite a number of people turned out for the Winter Dance to listen to the crowd-pleasing music of Borealis. The Student Council sponsored the dance and, with a little assistance from Santa's helpers, they put up the decorations to match the Christmas season. The snowflakes dangled from the ceiling and couples had their photos taken in front of Santa's sleigh. The scent of evergreen was brought out by the massive Christmas trees. As you danced among the crowd, you could sense the excitement for everyone knew that St. Nick was on his way. It was a slightly chilly night, but that did not affect the crowd. Everyone who attended, danced the night away. 1. Dance, Dance, Dance. 2. Is it really worth it? 3. Pine power! 4. You would have to use permanent marker since I only take a bath on Friday. 5. With the return of football we sponsored Homecoming and reinstated the traditional pow-wow. With the winter season came Winter Festival '78. That accomplished some of the Student Council members participated in a roll-a-thon. Sponsoring the read-a-thon and attendance at the annual North Central District and State Conventions rounded out the year. Highlights of the year were Student Council sponsored assemblies featuring a hypnotist and the Navy Band. Year-end elections resulted in a new slate of S.C. members. We will miss our Sr. members: John, Pate, Rona, Sally, and Debbie and hope the 1979-80 Council can do an even better job. 18 1. Do you see what I see? 2. A hard working Council member. 3. VICA has worked hard selling candy and sponges to raise money for their annual banquet. The May banquet, hosted for employers, parents, trainers, and students, was a big success. There was alot of hard work put Into the VICA organization. The early morning classes were probably the worst but the students were always glad to receive their hard-earned pay checks. The pride and satisfaction of being able to support themselves made it all worthwhile. VICA teaches each student a sense of responsibility. Having a job prepares each student for their career after high school. Everyday there is something new to learn and someone new to meet. There are many benefits to make up for all of the hard work. 87 I BELIEVE IN MUSIC 88 BAND 1. Color Guard left to right A. Bottcher, L. Wicks, P. Schwemelin, A. Koehler, D. Fritsch, K. Helin, T. In addition to football performances, the band also played in parades and in between basketball games. The Pom pons were featured at half-time. The Band will be taking a summer trip also for the first time in three years. This trip will take them to Nashville Tenn., where they will give three concert performances, march through Opryland, and participate in workshops and special tours. If you could see behind the scenes, this somewhat poor record would take on a new and different meaning. To begin with, the Sandwich Varsity returned to action this year after a 3 year absence. They played a demanding schedule including Hampshire, the 1 ranked team in the state. Talent was in abundance. The only problem was trying to put it together as a team. Taking all of these factors into account, the season now looks quite admirable. In the words of the coaches, The 1978 football season of S.H.S should be considered a success. I. Front row: F. Introducing our Superstar! VOLLEYBALL The girls volleyball teams had a few more fosses than wins this year, but still had a lot of fun and learned how to work. The Varsity team ended their season with 5 wins and 11 losses. Four girls on the Varsity team were honored at the sports banquet. Beth Hendron was voted in as the most valuable player, while Lisa Bonner and Karla King were chosen as the most outstanding players. Jill Knox came up with the highest average of good serves, displaying a big 92%. The Jr. Varsity team had a little edge on the Varsity. They had 7 wins and 9 losses. Lana Olson was chosen by her teammates as the most valuable player. Cathy Hendron, who also had 92% of good serves, had the highest average of the team. Mrs. Masilunis coached both teams with the help of Suzie Williams at the J.V. level. We hope to see some of the same faces on the teams next year. 10 109 STAND TALL The 1978-79 Varsity Basketball Team went through a season of many changes. Though they were hoping for a better record, they did have fun. Victories over Waterman, Marseilles, Paw Paw, and Aurora Christian were the highlights of the season. Outstanding showmanship by senior Roger Van Pelt was greatly recognized. Through their ups and downs they remained a close knit team and put forth great efforts. I. L. to R; back row, C. Abens, R.
