PLAY NAT'L HONOR SOCIETY PROM GRADUATION 2 CLASS OF 1966 The September of 1962 brought 95 enthusiastic freshmen to Sandwich High School. We did not realize the work and fun that was in store for us. Our first job was collecting boxes for the Pow-Wow. Bob Pruski, dressed as an Indian, lit the enormous pile of boxes to make the Pow-Wow a great success. In addition to this everyone eagerly worked on our Homecoming float, ’'We'll Bear Down On Them , which to our disappointment took fourth place. We started out our Sophomore year by taking a third place with our Homecoming float, We Shall Proceed With Vig-ah . Later in the fall we sponsored a sock-hop and then had a car wash before the Prom. The highlight of the year was the ordering of our class rings. The style was slightly different from preceding years and we were proud of them. Our Junior year seemed to go all too quickly. Our first project was the Homecoming float. With high hopes and hard work we strove to make our creation, She Stoops To Conquer , the most unique float ever. However, to our disappointment it only took third place. The Junior Class play, Hillbilly Wedding , was produced with a great amount of hard work. It was a great success and furnished the necessary funds for our next major activity, the Junior Carnival. It furnished fun and excitement for all who attended. After the Variety Show the romantic setting of a tropical island with palm trees and a treasure chest established the mood for an enjoyable evening of dancing and carried out the theme, Treasure Island. May brought spring and to S.H.S. the Junior-Senior Prom. All This and Heaven, Too brought not only an elegant evening to all but also angel hair from heaven! At the end of the year the coaches gave a round of thanks to our boys who helped bring the football and track championships to Sandwich. Our final cycle in high school brought us to our Senior year. Once again we strove to make our Homecoming float, The Unsinkable Sandwich Indians , a great success, but we again only took third place. At Christmas time we all awaited the arrival of our Senior pictures. The ordering of graduation announcements brought still more excitement. The Juniors showed all of us southern hospitality with their Prom, Southern Fantasy . Afterwards we enjoyed the lively Post Prom Party with Bob Hale and the disc jockey. Soon we found the end of the year coming to a close. Senior Class Day was filled with many memories and we then realized that leaving S.H.S. would bring many tears. Baccalaureate was held May 23 and Graduation was on June 3. We set a new style for graduates--the boys wore blue gowns and the girls wore white gowns. Our days of high school were finished but we had many lasting memories to take with us. She made her home in America with the Russell Larson family. She had three brothers and sisters in High School and one in Junior High. Signe, Senior; Royce, Sophomore; Kent, Freshman. Maryse enjoyed sports most while here, and to prove it, she broke her foot in the G.A. A. Basketball Championship Tournament. She participated in Student Council and Speech. She also showed her acting ability, by performing in the Musical. Maryse spoke at many organizations in the surrounding towns and was a member of a panel discussion, which was composed of other Exchange students. The Senior Class feels very lucky to have had Maryse with them, and therefore dedicates this page to Maryse so she might remember Sandwich High School a little better. Maryse comes to school with ALL (!?) of her homework finished. Early in the year, we captured first place on our Homecoming float, Give 'em the Dickens . This was just the beginning of our accomplishments, for throughout the year, we presented a Junior Class Play, Junior Carnival, and Junior-Senior Prom. There was also a large number of us in school activities and beginning to prepare for our futures by taking tests, as those before us had done. Our Junior year was an interesting and exciting year, which will never be taken from our memories. FRESHMAN CLASS The Freshman Class started out its busy year by gathering boxes for the annual Hoemcoming Pow Wow. Each freshman class tries to outdo the previous class by making the biggest fire. Naturally, the class of '69 argues that this was the biggest and best yet. Along with the Pow Wow, they accomplished the difficult task of putting together their first float, which placed only 4th. As the year progressed, they began to feel like a part of SHS and they're looking forward to the three years that lay ahead of them, as upperclassmen . Freshman Student Council Representatives. FRESH-SOPH FOOTBALL This year's frosh-soph team under the direction of Coach Rex Avery, who was assisted by Mr. Jim Ringel, compiled a season's record of 0-7-1, playing with a team composed of almost all freshmen. These boys, after learning many fundamentals and gaining much experience, should prove valuable on future varsity squads. Coach Hughes directs his varsity team from the sidelines. A Marseilles back is stopped short of the goal line. They also finished in a fourth place tie in the conference with a five and four record. This year was a record breaking year. The varsity scored 109 points against Plano to break the old record of 102. A new consecutive free throw record was also set by Geof Gengerbacher, who made 18 free throws in a row. Chuck Miller, captain, was voted the most valuable player by his teammates. A new addition has been added to the sports program this year at Sandwich. Despite a losing team record, due to inexperience, several of the team members placed high at district and conference meets. Since the team is losing only five seniors, this year of able coaching by Rex Avery will contribute next year to the experience the team lacked this season. WRESTLING AND CROSS COUNTRY Also new to the Sandwich sports scene this year is a group of seven determined distance runners--the cross country team. Lack of experience accounted for a losing season; however, prospects for the future are bright. Since all of the members of the team are underclassmen, they will be returning as experienced runners next year. Juniors, Bob Ferris and Bill Meyers led the team, followed by Tom Keaton and Dave Wood. Sophomore, Lamar Lewis and Freshmen, John Grantham and A1 Adams were also members. Cross Country: SITTING: B. VARSITY BASEBALL Record 0-7 The varsity team, coached by Jim Ringel, didn't have a very successful season. The squad, composed mainly of freshmen and sophomores, was hampered by a lack of experience. However, Coach Ringel feels that they all gained from the season and that they will do better next year. Bill Mueller was selected captain. He was also chosen as Most Valuable Player. 88 Duke Krauspe, 1st Base Jay French, Shortstop George Abens, 3rd Base Bill Mueller, Pitcher FIRST ROW: L to R: John Krauspe, Bob Ferris, Jay French, Bill Meyer, Ed Cummings, Gary Heckathom, Mike Wood, Bill Scheidecker, Steve Wendorf, Mike Eberle, Roger Fought, Tom Goudy. VARSITY TRACK This years track team proved to be one of the best organized and hardest working squads that has represented Sandwich High in many years. With five returning seniors serving as a backbone of the squad we won all but one of our triangular and quadrangular meets. The Little Ten Track meet was scheduled to be held at Sandwich May 2 and many coaches and writers picked Sandwich at best to win second place. Through a total team effort, however, we managed to tie Hinckley Big Rock for a Co-Championship in the Little Ten Conference. The Frosh Soph placed second in the Little Ten Track meet. BOWLING The Bowling League started late in September with about 40 members. This will be the first year the group has joined the Youth Bowling Association. We also compete in the DeKalb Tournament in De-Kalb. The Youth Bowling Association also sponsors a Tournament in Aurora. We competed in this Tournament, as well as the four county tournaments held in DeKalb by the DeKalb Recreational Alleys.
