Larry Allen, dressed as an Indian, lit the bonfire on Friday night which began the series of events. Wendy Smith gave an inspiring talk and there was much enthusiasm for this year's outstanding football team. The climax of the evening was the announcement of the 1964 Homecoming Queen. Jacquie Scents was chosen to reign over this year's Homecoming festivities. Doug Carter was chosen King. SENIOR CLASS FLOAT JUNIOR CLASS FLOAT The Homecoming parade on Saturdsy morning consisted of five bands and numerous floats. The Homecoming court was also featured in the parade. Homecoming Dance Famous Books was the theme for this year's Homecoming Dance. The seniors appropriately decorated the gym. Ken Oder and his band provided the music for the large number of students and alumni who attended this annual event. The evening was enjoyed by all who attended. Climaxing the evening was the coronation in which Jacquie Scents was crowned Queen by King Doug Carter. Would you help me? I twisted my ankle. I decided it was time I put some of the money my father left me to use. It hasn't done much for anyone so far. Musical Take It Easy, the all-school musical, told about the conflicts that arose in a small town, called Shady River when a dance band came to town. The opinions of the young and old differed as to what kind of music would be played. After a romance between the band leader and one of the local girls, the members of the opposition were won over and popular music prevailed. Oh, no you don't ! They are forced to spend the night at the Belsch-nickle's mountain c bin. Ceelie Belschnickle, the oldest and ugliest of the six daughters, takes a fancy to he city dude, Ronald, so Paw Belschnickle sets out to see that she gets him. 'Dearly beloved, we are gathered here together . . . Gosh dam it, Ceelie, you'll make me lose my supper ! 'You two should be skun for what ya done to Five. To complicate things, Ronald and Bonnie Mae, the sensible family bookworm, become fond of each other and are unaware of Ceelie's plans. It all ends in an unusual sort of hillbilly happiness as Ceelie discovers she really prefers Obey Upschlager, a dewy-eyed mountain boy to Ronald, and Bonnie Mae goes to the city with the Maxwells to study nursing. Junior Carnival On March 6, Treasure Island opened its crepe-paper doors and turned the gym into a fun-filled carnival. The fun house had its usual treacherous traps and there were pirates and jailers who roamed the midway looking for dangerous mutineers to jail in the escape-proof (?) brig. The carnival dance topped the gay evening. Ken Oder provided music for the Island Paradise which drew the couples onto the floor amidst the confetti. Variety Show The Variety Show included many different and humorous acts. It opened with the locally known Regals and ended with our own teacher, Mr . Clark. Some of the acts in between were Girls Octet, Dan Berggren with a monologue, a skit from forthcoming musical, and a satire of Hamlet” done by the Senior girls. Brad French was the moderator of the show. Mr. Clark HAMLET—by the Senior girls. What's the matter with you? Sandra asks Mabel. Stranger in the Night Sylvia Lee and Mabel Crane are two innocent owners of the Boulevard Hotel Book and gift shop. All goes well until Grant Terry arrives from New York telling of a vicious plot scheduled to take place in the Shop--a plot of MURDER! Within a very short time everyone in the hotel thinks they are the victim, for many different reasons. Eddie thinks he is the victim because of the traveling bag Nona, the elevator operator, has given him--he thinks it is full of stolen property. Sylvia thinks she is the one marked for murder for a reason she refuses to tell. Velda Stevens, the secretary of Mr. Rutledge, is convinced she is the victim because she was once hooked up with a blackmailer. Mabel knows that her time is up because she has learned how to capture a man. The play was full of surprises and turned out to be one of the best plays ever produced at Sandwich High. The play proved to be a real success with the many helpful hours of guidance given by Mr. Reid and Miss Johnson, the directors. The play was made complete with the help of Miss Young for scenery and make-up. A heavenly atmosphere prevailed with the festivities taking place up in the clouds. The evening began with the Jr.-Sr. Banquet. Master of Ceremonies was Kevin Casey and the main speaker was Bobbie Johnson who took us on a trip to the stars. A course that hadn't been planned on was the angel hair, which soon proved to be pretty unpopular. Next came the coronation where Pat McFarland and Chuck Miller were crowned King and Queen. Six little angels outlined the path to the throne. The angels were Jan and Jim Fanning, Sherry and Kim Elington, Mark Johnson, and Penny Rossok. The carpet boys were Barry and Gary Bedford, and the crownbearers were Michelle Bennett and J im Quinlan. During the Prom, couples danced in the mist of the heavenly starlight to the music of Ken Larkins band. The Big Dipper, fleecy clouds, and twinkling stars added to the enchantment. After the Prom, Ron Riley of WLS entertained at the Post Prom Party, which was enjoyed by all who went. Jacquie Scents and Doug Carter crown the new King and Queen Pat McFarland and Chuck Miller. 15 The Seniors solemnly march to the strains of Pomp and Circumstance. Graduation On June 8, 1965, 91 Seniors marched down the front steps of the High School toward their last official act as Seniors . . . Graduation. Our first big project was our Homecoming float, Going Down For The Third Time, which unsuccessfully captured fourth place. Dennis Pence was the Indian who lit our bonfire for the Pow-Wow. We happily declared that this was the best Pow-Wow we had ever seen. Money making events included bake sales and car washes. We became Sophisticated Sophomores and enjoyed ourselves. Four of our boys lettered on Varsity Football Squad. Our Homecoming float took second place in the parade and made us quite happy. It was We'll Whip Them All Soundly. Typing brought five-minute timings for us, driver's licenses were given to us, and we became acquainted with Mr. Sampson's Devil's Tongue. In spring our Frosh-Soph Track team won first place in the Little Ten Track Meet. This happy event brought our Sophomore year to an end. As we entered our Junior year we found we were faced with new responsibilities and duties. Eagerly and with much enthasiasm we worked on our Homecoming float, Give Me Liberty or Give Me Death. However, we weren't very successful and placed fourth. Next came our Junior Play, Deadly Ernest, which showed off the talents of our classmates. Our bake sales was also a success which gave us a substantial backing for the Junior Carnival, Monster Holiday. We all enjoyed working on our Prom and were thrilled that everyone liked it. Parisian Gardens brings back many happy memories for all of us. Our theme song was Under Paris Skies and was sung at the annual Junior-Senior Banquet. After the Prom there was a Post Prom Party with Art Roberts, from WLS, as disc jockey. Soon we found the end of the year coming to a close and many of us sentimentally said Good-bye to our Senior friends who graduated. Our Senior year was one none of us will forget. The first great event was the winning of the Fox Valley Conference by our football boys. How proud we were of them the night they brought the trophy home to us. Our Homecoming float received a second in the parade. It was entitled Streetcar Named Desire for Victory. Nine of our Football boys made the All-Conference Football team and four of them were Honorable Mention Little All-State. The first Advanced Biology Class was brought to SHS. Our class sponsored the first Post-Athletic Banquet Dance. This proved to be a real success. Stranger In the Night, our Senior Play was a big success also. The Juniors gave us a nice Prom and we spent a night which many of us will never forget. Our Varsity Track team brought the Little Ten Conference title to us. Class day was filled with memories of the four years. Baccalaureate was held June 6, and our life together came to an end on June 8. This brought tears to many as we thought of leaving our friends and the school that had come to mean so much to us. Junior Class We, the class of '66 faced our junior year with great enthusiasm and anticipation. After becoming acquainted with new subject matters such as chemistry and shorthand, we began our first project, the homecoming float. With high hopes and hard work we strove to make our ere -ation, She Stoops to Conquer, the most unique float ever. To our disappointment, it only came in third. Soon after homecoming the long awaited class rings arrived which everyone proudly displayed, although some didn't appear too satisfied with their own for they traded around until they found a more appealing one. The junior class play, Hillbilly Wedding, was produced with a great amount of hard work and riotous fun. It was a smash success and furnished the necessary funds for our next major activity, the Junior Carnival. A new and different theme for the carnival was sought and finally selected. Treasure Island furnished fun and excitement for all who attended. After the Variety Show the romantic setting of a tropical island with palm tree and treasure chest established the mood for an enjoyable evening of dancing. Then came the highlight of the year--the Junior Prom. The theme was extensively discussed until All This and Heaven, Too was finally decided upon. Following the banquet, the celestial atmosphere set by the decorations provided the background for a heavenly evening for all. The final weeks of school sped by and soon our thoughts were turned ahead to next year - -our senior year. 62 George Abe ns Diane Anderson Merillee Anderson Shirley Bain Linda Bark Gary Bastian Bob Benson Dan Berggren Pat Bowers Kevin Casey Donna Casner Kathie Chapman Jim Cover Donna Covert Terry Cunz Gene Curran Jerry Davis Alice Decker Bob Dummer Susan Eade Joan Felstead Kathie Gerlach Bonnie Gifford Joann Cord DaVonna Greif Mike Guyer 63 Judy Hanson Jean Hartman Roxane Hickman Mike Hill Dan Holmer Ron Hutter Bobbie Johnson Gary Johnson Donna Kerr Patsy King Linda Knights Paul Krapausky Philip Larson Signe Larson Gail Lauth Paul Lawyer Jon Leasure Linda Legner Susan Mall Pat McFarland Mary McMaster Rick Mclnturf Steve McMaster Jim Meade John Meilinger Chuck Miller 64 Bill Mueller Jim Munson Donna Nates Art Pekoe Dennis Pence Gary Peterson Sandy Reiners Karen Risk Carol Rogers Lorretta Warren Jerilynn Rogers Arline Rosentreter Donna Ross Renene Schiradelly Gary Schwickerath Nancy Shook Connie Shumway Mayo Sorrells Chuck Sutton Gordon Tooley Tim Tvrdik Jerry Vancil Linda Vincent Linda Wade Jim Walker Ed Wehling 65 Sophomores Our year began with a little more knowledge about what we were to look for than our year before. As we walked in the door, we realized that we weren't the youngest anymore, and we had to set examples for the one class below us. Before we knew it, Homecoming time was here, and we again had to plan and construct a float. After all the commotion, we had received a second place rating for the second year in a row. Next, we looked forward to a dull sophomore year as it is called. Even though we had no BIG money raising project, we had fun most of the time with the many activities that were open to us. As Christmas vacation, the Junior Carnival, the Intramural Basketball Tournament and Easter vacation passed, we realized that our important, Junior year, was approaching fast. Finally, the last day of school drew near. With the official changing of the seats, we realized that our sophomore year was only a memory, but our junior year was in the future! Freshmen Early in September, our class met for the first time at S.H.S. for Freshman Orientation. Here we were told the general rules of the school and held an election for officers. We elected Ron Wilkening, president; Karen Updike, vice-president; Lorna Anderson, secretary, and Susan Naylon, treasurer. Our first official duty was to collect the boxes for the PowWow. Gary Allen was chosen as our Indian to light the bonfire. For our float, we chose the slogan Indian Raid. After all our hard work, we only got fourth place. At the end of the year, we held a class party. STUDENT COUNCIL REPRESENTATIVES: LEFT TO RIGHT: Lewis Rex, Ken Tyrrell, Linda Hjort, Karen Updike, Royce Larson. The regular line-up included six underclassmen and three seniors so there is great hope for an even better record next year. Rick Sims was selected by his teammates as Honorary Captain. Chuck Miller was selected as most valuable player. Sims finished the season with a .415 batting average and lead the team in runs scored and stolen bases. Doug Carter Track This year's track team proved to be the best for many years at Sandwich High. After winning the biggest part of our meets, we had hopes of winning the Little Ten Championship held at Sandwich. As the day came around, everyone was excited about it. As the points were added up in everyone's minds, it seemed we had won, but when the officials finally tabulated their scores, it seemed we HAD won. At an assembly the next morning, Coach Hughes pointed out that many of the records had been broken the night before and he also said that our team was very improved, due to the fact that the boys put so much effort into it, and gave everything they had. We have never really considered track as one of our major sports, but since our Championship title, everyone has become more and more interested and proud of our boys. Bowling Each Saturday morning at ten o'clock, the Idle Hour Lanes was the scene of much enthusiasm, as the Sandwich High School Bowling League took their places on various teams. As the three games quickly ended, everyone seemed to be comparing their score cards, and enjoying the rise of their averages from week to week. The League this year was quite active. They travelled to DeKalb for a tournament, as well as participating in one, sponsored by the Idle Hour Lanes. As a whole, the year was very successful for our League. The sponsor was Mr. Clark.
