The traditional Pow-Wow was held on Friday night with Lonnie Rogers car ying the torch to light the bonfire. Ron Ferden, a 1956 graduate of SHS, gave an inspiring talk to the crowd. Co-captain, Gil Buttels, then announced the King and Queen of the 1963 Homecoming festivities. After the Pow-Wow was over, the cheerleaders led the snake dance through town. Saturday morning was the Homecoming Parade with many colorful floats being displayed. Along with our own band, four visiting bands added to the spirit of the parade. In the afternoon the big football game took place with Marseilles as our rivals. Although it was a hard fought game, Marseilles came out victorious. A colonial decorated gym was the setting for the Homecoming Dance. Bob Reiland’s Band furnished the music for the evening which was enjoyed by all who attended. The climax of the evening was the crowning of the Queen, Jackie Bowers, by the King, Rich Wallis. There's nothing startling or unusual about the name except to one Henry Gilcrest. Just the name Ernest sends Henry into shock. It all started when Henry's boss fired him, and his girl threw him overboard, and Aunt Ethel ordered him from her boarding house because he could not pay his rent. Henry pours out his troubles to Mr. Bumpus, who tells Henry that life has dealt him a miserable blow. Mr. Bumpus has a friend named Ernest who gets poor downtrodden souls like Henry out of their misery for $17.80. This is where the fun begins, and it continues throughout the entire play. Guided by the skillful direction of Miss Teal, the actors and everyone who helped behind the scenes provided two very interesting and successful performances. Pumpkin? questions Aunt Stella. The Collins family was looking forward to a peaceful summer at their cottage on Lake Ogeechobee when their older daughter, Claudia, arrived home from college with a beatnik poet in tow. The poet, Craven Bently, upsets the family completely with his demands for caviar and champagne and his criticism of Mr. Collins' detective stories. Things were complicated even more when Claudia's former boyfriend, Tony, was accused of theft by the wealthy Mrs. Cavendish. The mystery of the theft was finally solved at Craven's poetry Boooooommm. goes Craven as Mrs. Audubon studies recital. When Craven himself was discovered to be him through her binoculars, the thief and an accomplice of Mrs. Cavendish (better known as Horse-Face Lena) in an attempt at insurance fraud. Both the Collins girls worked out their problems in the romance department for a hectic, but happy ending. Miss Teal and Joanna White, prompter, look over a few last minute changes in the script. After the meal, Kristene (Judith Christensen) acted as a guide who described Paris in a new and enjoyable way. Sharene (Sharon Bagg) presented the key to Lynnette (Linda Whiteis). The coronation platform was encircled by hedges with rose covered trellises behind the throne. The band was also enclosed with hedges. The sidewalk cafe was separated from the dance floor by trellises covered with vines and flowers. The focal point was the small bridge in the center of the dance floor. The high point of the evening was the coronation. As the time drew near, Jim Yingling and Richard Engle, acting as carpet bearers, unrolled the royal carpet. The Courts crossed the bridge to the strains of the Senior theme song, Blue Moon. After the King and Queen had been crowned, they and the Courts danced the Coronation Dance to the Junior theme song, Under Paris Skies. SENIORS As freshmen we entered high school with a mixture of enthusiasm and bewilderment. Soon we entered into the Homecoming activities. At the Pow Wow, Jay Larson dressed as an Indian and held a flaming torch to the huge pile of boxes we had collected. Our float, We'll Cannonball to Victory, won second place in the parade. Richard Wallis, our president, led us through our first important year. Ross Martin was elected as our Sophomore class president. On our Homecoming float there sat a juicy red apple with a huge worm crawling from it. The slogan You Can't Worm a Victory Out of Us captured third prize. During the year we sponsored two sock hops to build our treasury for our busy Junior year. In April we ordered our distinctive class rings. As Juniors we found ourselves upperclassmen at last. We proudly displayed our new rings in October. The cast and committees developed the play, Time Out For Ginger, under the skillful direction of Miss Young. It provided an interesting and successful activity. The Junior Carnival was our next project. Under the leadership of Sherry Erwin the theme, Stone Age, was developed with the barters dressed in prehistoric costumes. The clowns, confetti, balloons, and prizes added to the fun. Bob Reiland's Band supplied the music as the confetti-covered crowd danced. During the dance, balloons floated to the floor to be collected as momentoes. Many long hours were spent in preparing the Jr.-Sr. Prom and Banquet. The gym was transformed into a mystic Moon Escapade with the milky way, big dipper, and twinkling stars. The throne where the King and Queen were crowned was a huge rocket ship. As seniors, we won first place on the float Don't Give Up the Ship. For weeks, our spare moments were spent in making the 10,000 flowers for the model warship. The ship was blue and complete with three white sails and rigging. The theme of the Homecoming, Famous Quotes provided a variety of decorations. The main point of interest was the giant scroll serving as the background for the coronation. Room and Bored was the title of our Senior play. The plot was original; the characters were unusual. A crazy poet, Craven Bently, created havoc when he came to visit the Collins' summer cottage. At last, we ordered our graduation invitations, and caps and gowns. Our remaining days in high school were few. Class day was enjoyed by all as we read the class history, Will, and Prophecy. Graduation night came and we felt both glad and sad. Memories of many happy days were carried in each one's heart as we separated in 1964. UNDERGRADUATES JUNIOR OFFICERS: left to right: Sandy Reinhart, vice-president; Susan Hurley, secretary; Nancy Thomas, treasurer; Linda Whiteis, president. JUNIOR CLASS Our Junior year was a busy one. We began work on our Homecoming float soon after school started. We chose Give Us Victory or Give Us Death as our slogan, and, even though we worked hard, we only won fourth place. Deadly Ernest, our class play, was presented on November 9 and 10. It was a big success and showed the talents of our classmates. To raise money for our Carnival, we sponsored a bake sale and a sock-hop. March 7 was the date for our Junior Carnival, Monster's Holiday followed by the dance Monster's Mash. The finale of the year was our Prom, Parisian Gardens on May 2. The banquet preceeding the dance helped set the mood of gay Paris for the festive night. SOPHOMORES The Sophomore class started the year with a third place for our Homecoming float, much to our dismay. The slogan We shall proceed with Vig-ah. was very catchy and an enlarged rocking chair represented the late President Kennedy's. Later in the fall we sponsored a sock-hop which was enjoyed by many. We also held a class party which was well attended. We had a carwash before the Prom. At the start of the second semester, we were proud to have five of our class members elected to the National Honor Society as probationary members. This was the first time that sophomores were elected into the chapter. The highlight of the year to us was the ordering of our class rings. The style was slightly different from last years and we were proud of them. The Indians, coached by Mr. Engle and Mr. Aho, won six triangular meets and finished second in three. They also finished in fourth place in the Little Ten Conference meet and competed in the Moosheart Relays and the Ottawa District Meet. Senior Dave Holmer was a steady performer throughout the season. His efforts were climaxed when he set a new school record of 5’8” in the high jump. Several other school records were established by underclassmen. Bob Livingston set a new mark in the 100 yard dash and the 220 yard dash, Bob Dummer lowered the time for the 880 yard run, and Doug Carter broke the pole vault record. The 880 yard relay team composed of Bob Livingston, Doug Carter, Tom Bernhardt, and Aaron Martin also established a new school record. The leading point winners for the Indians, with the exception of Dave Holmer, will all return for another season of competition, which indicates the tracksters should have an even better season to come.
