Our first class activity was gathering material for the pow-wow bonfire. Dressed as an Indian, Jim Foster lit the pile of boxes with a flaming torch. New subjects were introduced to us and we began to conquer them. Our efforts proved fruitful for 30% of our class made the honor roll. At a tobogganing party held at the Forest Preserve some of us slid down the hill while others devoured pop and popcorn in the cabin. After one good year under president, Cheryl Leonard, we were determined to always do our best at S.H.S. Feeling more secure we began our Sophomore year by capturing first place in the Homecoming parade with our float, The Beare Facts. To make money was our greatest aim. A Halloween Hop was held after the last football game. The selling of personalized stationary and car washes boosted our treasurey. An old fashioned class party featued many different types of recreation and entertainment. Competition in chess, cards, pantomimes, and other games was held in the library while ping-pong, shuffleboard, and dancing progressed in the gym. Receiving our class rings was a thrilling way to end the year. Upperclassmen at last! The activities of our Junior year required the most work but were also the most rewarding. Our float, Butterfly to Victory really flew our class to victory by winning first prize in the Homecoming parade. The huge monark butterfly pointed toward a colorful garden of flowers. Our Junior play, Men Are Like Streetcars, was received enthusiastically by the audience. The plot was centered around the many love problems of Maudie, portrayed by Karen Dummer. Roaring Twenties Carnival was under the leadership of John Cortright. Our stands, fun houses movie, Keystone cops, and dance took in a great deal of people, noise, and money. After much debating on the theme and song for the Prom, Enchanted Sea came to life. We were certainly proud of the mermaid, treasure chest, and sunken ship that we constructed. Much inititive and creative-ness was shown in the murial and other detailed decorations. The King and Queen were crowned in a huge corrigated clam shell. Our Senior year started out right when we placed first with our Homecoming float. A superior feeling was felt for we had won first place three years in a row. Originality was evident again in St. George and the Dragon. Our pride and joy (the dragon) was aqua and white and breathed smoke. Storybook Land, the theme for the Homecoming dance enabled us to work up new and different decorations. The north pole in Santa's Toyland was the center of the Christmas Dance. The refreshments were served from the window of Santa's workshop. Many unusual characters were developed in our Senior play, You Can't Take It With You. The action developed around the part of the carefree grandfather, played by John Latham. The registration of underclassmen along with ordering announcements and being measured for caps and gowns made us realize our remaining days in high school were numbered. The reading of the class Will, Prophecy, and History were the main events of our Class Day. Graduation night showed mixed feelings on the part of all. Many were glad it was over but sorry to leave. This night ended our thirteen school years together, but we'll have many memories that we'll treasure forever. The class of '63 was led very successfully by these capable officers: Denny Ferden, Pres., Lorraine Hough, V.-Pres., Mary Todd, Sec., and Ken Hagar, Treas. We were honored to have Denny Ferden as our President for three years. He served faithfully.
