English 2,3,4 Freshman Class Coach, Basketball 10 Our first class activity was gathering material for the pow-wow bonfire. Dressed as an Indian, Jim Foster lit the pile of boxes with a flaming torch. New subjects were introduced to us and we began to conquer them. Our efforts proved fruitful for 30% of our class made the honor roll. At a tobogganing party held at the Forest Preserve some of us slid down the hill while others devoured pop and popcorn in the cabin. After one good year under president, Cheryl Leonard, we were determined to always do our best at S.H.S. Feeling more secure we began our Sophomore year by capturing first place in the Homecoming parade with our float, The Beare Facts. To make money was our greatest aim. A Halloween Hop was held after the last football game. The selling of personalized stationary and car washes boosted our treasurey. An old fashioned class party featued many different types of recreation and entertainment. Competition in chess, cards, pantomimes, and other games was held in the library while ping-pong, shuffleboard, and dancing progressed in the gym. Receiving our class rings was a thrilling way to end the year. Upperclassmen at last! The activities of our Junior year required the most work but were also the most rewarding. Our float, Butterfly to Victory really flew our class to victory by winning first prize in the Homecoming parade. The huge monark butterfly pointed toward a colorful garden of flowers. Our Junior play, Men Are Like Streetcars, was received enthusiastically by the audience. The plot was centered around the many love problems of Maudie, portrayed by Karen Dummer. Roaring Twenties Carnival was under the leadership of John Cortright. Our stands, fun houses movie, Keystone cops, and dance took in a great deal of people, noise, and money. After much debating on the theme and song for the Prom, Enchanted Sea came to life. We were certainly proud of the mermaid, treasure chest, and sunken ship that we constructed. Much inititive and creative-ness was shown in the murial and other detailed decorations. The King and Queen were crowned in a huge corrigated clam shell. Our Senior year started out right when we placed first with our Homecoming float. A superior feeling was felt for we had won first place three years in a row. Originality was evident again in St. George and the Dragon. Our pride and joy (the dragon) was aqua and white and breathed smoke. Storybook Land, the theme for the Homecoming dance enabled us to work up new and different decorations. The north pole in Santa's Toyland was the center of the Christmas Dance. The refreshments were served from the window of Santa's workshop. Many unusual characters were developed in our Senior play, You Can't Take It With You. The action developed around the part of the carefree grandfather, played by John Latham. The registration of underclassmen along with ordering announcements and being measured for caps and gowns made us realize our remaining days in high school were numbered. The reading of the class Will, Prophecy, and History were the main events of our Class Day. Graduation night showed mixed feelings on the part of all. Many were glad it was over but sorry to leave. This night ended our thirteen school years together, but we'll have many memories that we'll treasure forever. The class of '63 was led very successfully by these capable officers: Denny Ferden, Pres., Lorraine Hough, V.-Pres., Mary Todd, Sec., and Ken Hagar, Treas. We were honored to have Denny Ferden as our President for three years. He served faithfully. FRESHMEN As September rolled around, the doors of S.H.S. were opened to our Freshman class. While on a tour of the building, there were many bewildered looks being passed from student to student. As we finally got settled, ready for our fun-filled year, we were confronted with gathering many boxes for the Pow Wow bonfire as well as constructing our own float. After many evenings of hard work, we came out with fourth place much to our disappointment. The majority of us participated in extracurricular activities. With a fairly equal amount of hard work and fun, we managed to get through our first year of High School. STUDENT COUNCIL: Mike Hill, Joann Gord, Ron Hutter, and Diane Anderson. Plane Geometry, biology, and typing were introduced to us. Our treasury was supplied with funds from a bake sale held in March and a car wash held on the day of the prom. Everyone enjoyed the one-semester Drivers Training course which was required. During the year, we participated enthusiastically in pep skits, organizations, and the Variety Show. JUNIORS We started out our jam packed Junior year with much enthusiasm. Many evenings of hard work went into our float Puss and Boots with the caption We'll Boot Our Way to Victory. Soon we were proudly displaying our new class rings. This was just another sign we were no longer underclassmen. Much time and effort was put in to the Junior Play. The cast and committees developed Time Out For Ginger into a great success. Our next project was the Junior Carnival, the Stone Age. The mad-dashing crowd, which attended the carnival, variety show, and dance, seemed to enjoy it wholeheartedly. From then on plans and headaches began for the night of nights, the prom. The theme, Moon Escapade, enhanced many high school couples as they glided through the doors of the beautiful decorated gym. The banquet and dance climaxed our year and from there we looked forward to being Seniors. Presenting a Spring Concert, going to contest, playing for Band Parents Assn., and participating in the Little Ten Band Festival kept them busy in the spring. Denny Ferden was chosen to play in the All State Band at Champaign-Urbana. This year the extra small bands were: Dixieland Band, Dance Band, and the Pep Band. The Majorettes and Color Guard added much color and life to the band as they marched. The band has improved a great deal on the whole this year. In this meet we had many finalists who took places and received points for us. Excitement rose when we placed second, losing first place by a very small margin. Representatives were sent to the district meet at Ottowa. Not many places were won here, but many high school records were broken or tied. The records tied were: Nick Weber, the 100 yard dash; and Ralph Wallis, the 440. Records that were broken were: Denny Ferden, the high hurdles; Dick Stahl, the 880 yard run; and the 880 yard relay. The chain of events was touched off on Thursday night as Bob Pruski, dress as an Indian, lit the enormous pile of boxes, collected by the Freshman class. Ken Augustine's alumni speech gave praise and inspiration to our football squad. Immediately following the announcement of the King and Queen, the cheerleaders led the snake dance to the bank corner The well planned parade, organized by the Student Council, which followed on Friday, supported the theme with many class and club floats. PARADE FUTURE FARMERS of AMERICA The Earlville, Hinckley Big Rock, and Sandwich High School bands provided gay marching music led by snappy majorettes. The Sandwich band looked especially striking as they led the parade in their new uniforms. The Mother's Club, Band Parents, Lion's Club and Masonic Lodge submitted floats to add to the brilliance of the parade. Additional variety was added by a number of gaily decorated bicyclists and horseback riders. Our smashing victory over Earlville on Friday night put all in a gay mood for the Saturday night dance. A great number of complications result; the principal threatens to expel her, her father's job is jeopardized, her older sisters Jeanne and Joan insist their social life is ruined and even Ginger's boy friend deserts her during these crucial weeks. Many riotous mishaps, including Ginger's foot race with the captain of the football team, and her touchdowns at the football game, prove that playing football and being a girl are not always in agreement. There seems to be a need for a Time Out For Ginger. Time out to make Ginger realize the real enjoyment of being a girl. Guided by the skillful direction of Miss Young, the actors and also the people who helped behind the scenes provided a very interesting and successful performance. RIGHT: The dignified bank president, Mr. Hoffman, does a snake dance cheering, Booma lacka, booma lacka, sis boom bah, Howard Carol, rah, rah, rah! RELOW: You can't make All American until you're in college, Howard sneeringly says to Ginger. Agnes and Lizzie hold their tongues to discontinue any further argument. Mr. Clark, a more ambitious faculty member, pantomimes to the sweet strains of A Yellow Rose of Texas. ABOVE: These girls show their talent. BELOW: Tom Wallis, a clown for the occasion, hams it up. VARIETY SHOW The Variety Show, which was sponsored by the Student Council, proved to be very successful. The large crowd which attended viewed many humorous and serious acts. The happy-go-lucky clowns added spice and laughter to the evening. Brad French was the moderator of the show. The A.F.S. fund was given the proceeds from the show. LEFT: The highlight of the dance was the balloon drop. RIGHT: Pat Ament throws herself into the fun of the carnival. JUNIOR CARNIVAL cc STONE A GE The Stone Age spirit came to S.H.S. in March. The stands, cake walks, fun house, kissing booth, and clowns drew an exceptionally dense crowd. The barters were dressed prehistorically. Loads of confetti, = balloons, and prizes were reduced to rubble in the fun. Music for the dance, which followed the variety show, was supplied by Bob Reiland’s Band. A balloon drop filled with confetti and balloons floated to the floor silently covering the crowd. k To our future happiness, says Tony Kirby to Alice Sycamore. They truly enjoy life by doing what they like most. Playing a xylaphone, printing circulars, painting, writing plays, ballet dancing, producing fireworks, and collecting snakes are their varied hobbies. In contrast to these delightful people are the unhappy Kirbys. Tony, the attractive young son of the Kirbys, falls in love with Alice Sycamore. When the Kirbys are invited to dine at the Sycamores, Tony brings them on the wrong evening. The Kirbys, shocked to see what Alice's family is really like, oppose Alice's marriage to Tony. However, Tony will not give up and finally Mr. Kirby is converted to the happy madness of the Sycamores. Miss Young, the director, is to be commended for a very excellent production. How's this tune for dancing? asks Ed Carmichael to his wife, Essie. The Mermaid Sextet sang Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea. These Seniors are Nancy Rex, Joan Peterson, Karen Dummer, Sharon Johnson, Kaye Carter and Virginia Reinhart. The crownbearers, Vanessa Bastian and Roy Walgren, await their entrance. PROM The banquet began the evenings activities. On May 4, 1963, Moon Escapade took us on an expedition into outer space. It was evident that the Juniors had worked many long hours to create this outer world atmosphere. The banquet began at 6:30 P.M. with the serving of delicious turkey, dressing, mashed potatoes, beans, hot rolls, jello salad, and pie or sherbet. Dave Holmer as the Man in the Moon announced the program which began with Randy Shook's speech describing Moon Escapade. The presentation and acceptance of the key, the singing of the Senior theme song by the Mermaid Sextet, and the singing of the Junior theme song by the Satellite Quartet ended the banquet activities. From here we traveled across to the high school and entered outer space. As we walked into the gym we saw a huge rocket ready to blast off from its launching platform. The milky way, big dipper, and even a Sputnik adorned the ceiling. From a cloud came the mysterious music of Art Kunold's Band. As the time neared for the court to enter, two little space men, Mark Underwood and Jerry DeVries, unrolled the floating white carpet. Down this pathway emerged the two courts and the crownbearers. After the 1963 King and Queen were crowned they led off the dancing. Many high school students and their dates, along with the invited faculty members attended the prom. Blue Moon, the Junior theme song, was sung by the Satellite Quartet consisting of Sheery Erwin, Margie Lockman, Joanna White, and Kama Peterson. GRADUATION 73 Seniors proceeded up the aisle on June 7, 1963, to begin the commencement ceremony. The graduation was to be held outside for the first time in many years provided it didn't rain. However, an hour before the exercises were to begin a downpour forced us inside to the high school gym. Another change this year was having the band play the processional and the recessional. After the invocation by Rev. Wright, Denny Ferden, president of the senior class, welcomed those attending. Jerry Wright, valedictorian of the class, gave a speech about Mr. Crosby presents a diploma to the Valedictorian of the class, Jerry Wright.
