Our majorettes dressed as Indian maidens lead the band, an Indian scout lights our homecoming bonfire, our cheerleaders and majorettes present an Indian ceremonial dance as a welcome at the basketball games, and the word Indian appears in many of our cheers. This year the Reflector staff decided to have an Indian to show you through the book--so we would like you to meet Pee Wee Pow Wow, our mascot. We hope that you will find him to be a very entertaining fellow. 02i e 'Dedicate 7 i ta fyou With this dedication the Editorial Staff of the Reflector and the senior class wish to acknowledge their sincere appreciation to you, Mrs. Lindner, the advisor of this yearbook. We sincerely hope that, in some small way, this will express our gratitude for the time, the inspiration, and the help you have so generously given us. 3 I z u£ udtle Sufofi it t£e (?e tte t UaC . . . Forrest, called Kate by everyone since childhood, is known for his tremendous memory. He possesses a fabulous knowledge of American history and owns one of the most extensive libraries in Sandwich. Kate's main function, to keep the school warm, caused him to spend many a night firing up the furnace so that the faculty and students could enjoy a comfortable day at school. 02Oe S zCute tyou fan tyoun Senotce . . . Henry Werner 02{ 6e t 6 cm, info As I stand here in line waiting to receive my diploma, I solemnly look back to my years with the class of 59. It doesn't seem thirteen years ago when as proud kindergarteners we learned to tie our own shoes and print our names. Every afternoon we'd lie on rugs and listen to a story. Carol Wilkening, I remember, always fell asleep and sometimes wouldn't wake up until it was time to go home. What fun we had sending our friends letters through our post office, and dramatizing Mother Goose nursery rhymes. In first grade we set aside our rugs and crayons, and took up readin', 'ritin', and 'rithmetic. We became quite proficient musicians by the formation of a great band of triangles, whistles, drums, and tambourines. The biggest thrill of second grade came when our favorite teacher, Miss Jones, took us all to the show. I remember how jealous we were of Judy and Ronnie who always seemed to receive all of her attention. Third grade saw us on the stage, in the operetta, PETER RABBIT, starring Chuck Naylon. How we did struggle with those multiplication tables in fourth grade! I remember the program we presented in which Susan Stahl as the drab girl did a toe dance. For the first time we were all together as one class in fifth grade at the South Side. I'll never forget the many nights we spent after school for Mr. Anderson. Our operetta, SEASON OF HAPPINESS, featured Walden Lewis as the Moon. Sixth grade divided us again. Patrol duty gave us a sense of responsibility and a feeling of importance. But how cold we would get in the winter! I remember how MissScheideckermade us sit on our hands and feet to thaw them out. Seventh grade brought the two classes together again, this time at the North Side. How grown up we felt now that we were in Junior High. With the help of the eighth grade, we presented MISSISSIPPI MELODY. Representing our class in the operetta were Walden Lewis and Susan Stahl. Our boys proved themselves men of action by winning the basketball championship. Dancing lessons gave us an idea what gentlemen they could be. I'll never forget the Junior High Prom, our first big dance. The most memorable year of grade school was eighth grade. Mrs. Moss especially left a lasting impression on our minds about the evils of gum chewing and talking without permission. Writing the Preamble and the Declaration of Independence as punishment paid off, though, when it came time to take tests on them. The basketball championship was becoming a tradition with us; again we took possession of the first place trophy. How well I remember the fun of Hobo Day with our gaily painted shoes and old, tom pants. Dancing lessons continued, climaxed by a party at the end of the year. With the arrival of spring, we anticipated graduation eagerly but somewhat sadly. Soon we would be advancing another step, leaving grade school days only to be remembered. Highlight of graduation night was the presentation of the American Legion Awards to Bob Fritsch and Sharon Larson. The Junior High Prom held afterwards brought grade school days to a close. Then we were freshmen—timid, frightened, and lost. We elected Wendell Smith our president, and Sandra Helin and Juanita Morris represented us as cheerleaders. I remember the thrill of homecoming and our first float We'll Clean Up Plano. As a means of raising money, we had a bake sale. The year ended with our advisors, Mrs. Baxter and Mr. Hancock, taking us to the Forest Preserve for a picnic. As sophomores we felt more at ease and became more a part of school activities. Our two cheerleaders were reelected, and We Figure We'll Win was our entry in the homecoming parade. I remember when our president, Juanita Morris, got caught in her bathrobe at our Come-As-You-Are party. What fun! Class rings came when we were juniors. How proud we were of them! Bob Fritsch led us through a busy year which began with homecoming activities. I'll never forget the many nights and hard work we put into our float, We're Expecting T-Win. We finally succeeded, though, in making Freddie look like a stork. Four juniors, Dova Jacobs, Carole Bach, Mick Cronin, and Bob Fritsch had the honor of being elected to the homecoming court. Our cheerleaders, Dova and Sandra, helped cheer our team to victory after victory. 'ZV ie 'fyocctty cutcC (fa ? ' ' Before a full house, we presented our junior play, A DATE WITH JUDY, with Carole Bach in the leading role. A trip to the Crossroads after the presentation rewarded our long hours of practice. A turkey raffle in December provided Christmas dinners for six families and increased the amount in our treasury. Then came the Junior Carnival, with crejpe paper and confetti, clowns and fortune tellers. Cooperation and hard work made the carnival and dance successful, profitable, and fun. We were now ready for the biggest and grandest affair of the school year—the Junior-Senior Prom. Excitement swelled as the court was chosen, the theme selected, committees lined up, and general preparations made. I'm sure none of us will ever forget the nights we worked so hard on the gym, especially those who stayed until four o'clock one morning. Finally, the big night arrived. The seniors and faculty were our guests at the banquet at the Lynn Haskin school. The program was highlighted by Juanita Morris, the Enchantress, who took the road to her land of make believe, and added merriment to the banquet. Then on to the dance. How beautiful the gym was, and how proud we were of our achievement. To the strains of Some Enchanted Evening Jon escorted Carole to the throne where they were crowned King and Queen of the 1958 Junior-Senior Prom. The junior attendants of the royal couple were Dova, Kay, Mary Lou, Bonny, Wendell, Bob, Jim, and Walden. Little Linell Eriksson and Aaron Prestegaard, the crown bearers, delighted everyone with their part in the coronation ceremony. Our blue, pink, and silver ceiling with blinking lights, star studded trees, and wishing well, along with the dance-able music of the Rhythmaires, made it an unforgettable and truly an Enchanted Evening. With our junior year nearing an end, we looked forward to the approaching year, anxious to be seniors at last, but reluctant to accept the responsibilities and leadership that were expected of us. Homecoming, as in other years, got our last year under way. Our novel float, We'll Put 'em In Orbit, featured the famous Sputnik. Dova Jacobs was crowned Homecoming Queen by King Bob Fritsch at the dance following the game. Scene of the coronation ceremony was under a huge football bearing our theme title, September Sentiments. Senior members of the court were Carole Bach, Mary Lou Murphy, Chuck Naylon, Joh Eriksson, and Wendell Smith. The Junior-Senior Hunt found the seniors hidden safely from view of the juniors in a cornfield. The holiday season brought the Christmas dance. Under the leadership of our president, Jon, and with the guidance of our advisors, Mr. Hancock, Miss Harrod, and Miss Baie, we made Silver Bells the prettiest Christmas dance ever. We worked extra hard to make our last big class project a special success. I'll never forget the panic when our false ceiling fell two nights before the dance. The 1958 Christmas Dance will long be remembered for its beautiful atmosphere, white Christmas tree, the mural, and its rhythmic band. Juanita Morris and the rest of the cast put in many long nights of hard practicing to make our senior play, WE SHOOK THE FAMILY TREE, a tremendous success. With our part in school events ended by the play, we began thinking about Commencement activities. Announcements were ordered, robes selected, and our class motto, flower, and colors decided upon. Baccalaureate came, followed by class night, and now graduation. As I stand here, reminiscing, I wonder what my classmates' thoughts are as we prepare to say goodbye and go our separate ways. The familiar strains of Pomp and Circumstance fi) the auditorium; the procession is starting. Soon the projects we worked on together and the achievements and disappointments we shared will be only memories. Where has the time flown? As I walk down the aisle, my thoughts are of our class motto: Time goes, you say? Ah, No! Alas, time stays; we go! ?utune Class Night . . . May 22 . . . Mistress of Ceremonies . . .
