4 ORIENTAL SPRING m “.in 1 f ! hJ 1 m 1 iln ) 1 1 lH It was Oriental Spring that night. Every girl who had her picture taken underneath the pagoda felt herself transformed into Ma- dame Butterfly. Couples strolled among the trees and exotic flow- ers mingled with sparkling white lights. Some stood on the bridge , and gazed down into the clear pool below. Color was everywhere; rich oriental red accented with royal touches of gold and black. The music was performed by Beat Surrender and The Drive. It didn ' t seem to matter that they never played our theme song, This Could Be the Might. Everyone just enjoyed dancing, but soon the high heels came off and girls were wearing their dates bow ties. Christine Zeliski was crowned a beautiful Prom Queen on the arm of a no less dashing Tim Myles. They ' ll never forget that night. Mone of us will, because we, the Class of 1987, made it. The Class of 1987 proudly dedicates this yearbook to Mrs. Carole Antis and Mrs. Sandra Hardy. Without them, our years at Sandwich High School would never have been so successful, not to mention so much fun! Mrs. Antis means many different things to many different people. To some, she is a co-worker; to some, she is a mother; to some she is a friend. According to one student, To know her is to love her. Mrs. Antis has dedicated herself to many activities, including the Key Club and the yearbook. However, her commitment never ends when she leaves the building. She hands over much of her personal time to organizations and individuals. She is universally known for her patience and sense of humor, which gives her the ability to relate to all types of students in the building. Her outgoing nature lets her make decisions easily and her wit can make the most impossible situations seem funny. Many students feel comfortable enough with Mrs. Antis to turn to her when they need someone to talk to. She always listens. Her willingness to help students with personal problems, both in and out of school, shows not only that she is a superior teacher and advisor, but also a caring human being. We hope that Mrs. Hardy will remember her years with us as hectic, frantic, and FUni Our class owes the huge success of Oriental Spring to her dedication, creativity, and at times, her blind faith! Mrs. Hardy put in a lot of worry, sweat, and overtime into our prom, our floats, and our dances. We found out afterwards that it was all worth it - but she knew that all the time. (Or did she!) It really doesn t matter because without her, these major events in our lives would never have been. 1987 DEDICATED FRIENDS OF THE CLASS OF ADMimSTRATlOn James Sibson, John Pierce, Robert Milbier Dr. Joseph nicholson 18 -t M. This year marks the 30th anniversary of soccer in Sandwich. In addition to this great feat, the soccer team has 226 wins to its credit. Coach Harry Evans, in his 14th season, accomplished his 150th win as head of the Sandwich Varsity Team. The team compiled an 9-4-5 record, finished second in the South Shore League small school division, and won a berth in the MIAA Division III State Tournament. With a good mix of sophomores, juniors, and seniors, the team ' s balanced attack was led by Tri-Captains Joey Longo, Chris Larochelle, and Mike McKeen. Six Sandwich players were named to the South Shore League ALL-STAR TEAM. Those included were 2nd year return all-stars, senior halfback Joe Longo, senior halfback Chris Larochelle, and senior stopper Mike McKeen. First year all-stars include sopho- more sweeper Darren Feeley, Junior halfback Brendan Fish, and senior goalie Rob Jones. Fish, Jones were All Eastern MA and Fish All State. The MIAA Division III state tournament began with 11th seeded Sand- wich facing 6th seeded Fairhaven. Led by Brendan ' s goal and the strong goaltending of Rob Jones, the Blue Knights came away with a 1-0 win, which advanced them to the state quarter finals. The Knights ' dream however, came to an end as they suf- fered a tough 3-0 defeat to the hands of 3rd seeded Do- ver-Sherborn. De- spite this, the Sand- wich Blue Knights future looks very bright for years to come. The 1986 Sandwich Junior Varsity Soc- cer Team compiled a record of 9-5-2, including an 8-game winning streak. Di- rected by Coach Silvio Tedeschi, the team which included 12 freshman, worked hard to improve their skills throughout the season. The teams ' success was spearheaded by sweeperback Scott Rivora, stopperback Ryle Chaffee, and goal tender Bob Vaughan. The outlook for next year is very promising with a good crop of tal- ented 8th graders. Front (I to r): J. Curley, K. Shea, n. Sullivan, J. Pawloski, T. Russell, J. MacDon- ald, R. Harmon, C. Yes, their final record was 21 wins, 1 loss, and 1 tie, but they did not lose a field hockey game; they lost a shoot-out! Led by tri-captains, Joanne Peters, Sarah Straut, and Laura Shaw the finest team in the history of Sandwich field hockey ended the regular season as champions of the competitive South Shore League with 18 wins, no losses and one tie. As top seed in the State Division II South Sectional tournament. Coach Ericson ' s squad finally broke the first game knockout jinx that had haunted previous tourney teams with a 3-1 victory over Sacred Heart of Kingston and continued their drive to the sectional finals by overpowering Wareham, 2-1 and shutting down last year ' s champion Bellingham in double overtime, 1-0. The championship match-up with Mil- ton did not prove who was the better team since the actu- al game ended after three 10 minute overtimes in a 0-0 tie and had to be de- cided by a shoo- tout. Milton defeat- ed Sandwich by one shot! The team should re- peat in 1987 since they will lose only six seniors, the tri- captains and Mi- chelle Sullivan, Ka- tie O ' Hear and Kristen Joyce. Of the 28 players, only 6 were sophomores which prom- ises a very successful season due to the youth of the team. The four key scorers were: Brenda Fox, riicole Qrise, Kim Chisholm, and Jessy Knowles. With such an aggressive team. Sandwich field hockey will be entering the state tournament again and again and again!! Front (L to R) J. Fullerton, P. Harrington, J. Trautner, M. Weedon, L. Bianco, B. Spofford, C. An overall record of 8-8 placed them in a tie for second place in the small school division. The team ' s top runner Ted Qiampietro br oke the course records at Middleboro and at home by one second. This outstanding feat led him to the title of most valuable player, as well as a member of the MSG publications Cape Cod All Star team. Other award re- cipients were senior captain, Sean Sullivan, who won the sportsmanship award and freshman, Jason Qendron who was voted the most im- proved player. The girls ' cross country team finished a tough season with a 0-8 record in the South Shore League, and an overall record of 1-11, placing them fifth in the small school division. The sportsmanship award was presented to junior Megan Helms and sophomore, Cas- sie Ash was awarded most valuable player. Although the records did not meet the expectations of the teams. In the offensive end was Paul Anacki, averaging 16 points in his first two games of the season, while Bob Vaughan averaged 11 points with Pete Conroy averaging 9 and Justin Gallant with 7, as well as Eric Longo averaging 6. The JV Knights possess a positive de- sire to win and have proven this many times throughout the season. X FUTURE IS PROMISING The Girls Varsity Basketball team pulled together in the second half of the season to provide tough competition for the teams of the South Shore League. The Lady Knights were plagued by inexperi- ence in the beginning of the season winning only two of their First six games. They were able to come back and win nine of their remaining games which enabled them to tie Abington for second place in the South Shore League Small School Division. The starting team consists of only one senior, this year ' s captain, Kara Peterson, who plays a forward position; Juniors, Julie Donahue and Suzie Sykes; and sophomores, Alison Corradi and Aimee Daigneault. The 1986-87 Junior Varsity Girls Basketball team is having a fine season. The record at this time is 8-0-4. Team starters are: Shay Perry, Heidi Condon, Gina Mennett, Christy Case, and either Traci Legate, Kristen Cum- mings or Beth Dillen. The lead shooters are: Shay Perry, Christy Case, Heidi Condon, and Maura Hicholson. Great rebounders are: Gina Mennett, Maura nicholson, and Kristen Condon. Traci Legate, Jennifer Litchfield, Kristen Cummings, and Beth Dillen have also seen action on the court. The Blue Knights turned a dismal beginning season into an excit- ing one, which culminated in an electrifying victory over Bourne in Canal Cup V. All of the seniors, Chris L aRochelle, Allen Canning, Rob Jones, Rick Pierce, Nike Goodwin, Nike Rathbun, and Rich Connolly molded this team into a swift skating, hard-hitting bunch that would not give up against anyone. Steve Corradi and Tom O ' Connor led Cape Cod and the South Shore League in scoring. With two games remaining in the season, the Knights had a good shot of making the state tournament again after missing out last year. A tribute, to this team and to the dedication and pride they displayed to bring them success! Although the Junior Varsity Hockey team has had a disap- pointing year, their overall record of 1-3-1 does not reflect the true story of how this team has been playing. The team is primarily made up of junior high players which proves a severe disadvantage when mosts teams in the league have players that are in the ninth grade or better. The Jr. Blue Knights are looking forward to this year ' s J.V. Canal Cup after last year ' s heartbreaking defeat 4-3. First Row; T. Dwyer, C. Raposa, C. Casey, J. Harrington, H. Donahue, J. The theme was Decades and the junior class captured First place with their portrayal of the future. The freshmen came in a close second with the 1920 ' s, followed by the sophomores and the 1950 ' s. The seniors presented an authent ic 1960 ' s peace march. It was a sad day for Cohasset, losing to both our varsity and j.v. Lady Knights field hockey teams. The J.v. boys ' soccer team also emerged victorious. The varsity soccer team fought hard for the tie that put them into the state tourna- ment, as well. It was the perfect day. The air was crisp, the leaves were turning, and spirits were soaring. The 1986 Homecoming festivities carried on their long-lasting tradition of sports- manship and spirit. Homecoming in Sandwich has become a rite of autumn. UP DARLinO WAKE This year ' s Senior Play was Wake-Up Darling . Director Dick Stott commented that this was one of the best Senior pro- ductions he has seen in a long time. Don and Polly Emerson were played by Chris Cronin and Amy Qurisko. Don ' s secre- tary Martha was played by Bev- erly Davis and Denise O Brien played Polly ' s best friend Glo- ria. The playwright who tries to take Polly away was portrayed by Dan Savel. His rich father, Granville Prescot, was Mark Seijak. Penelope, who ended up with Deerfield, was Cara Hemmila. Sharon Anacki played the Emerson ' s hand- me-down maid. Throughout the show there were many visi- tors looking for a party. Some of these were Kristen MacDon- ald, Jen Curley, Jen Ogg, Chris Meeks, Debbie LeMire, Mark Bi- lodeau, Kevin Shackett, and Mike Geller. The two policemen passing time in the alley were Jim LeBlanc and Ray Brady. All and all it was a fun show. 87 Life is like a cookie jar. In fact, the Emperor was 30 miles away at his villa in Antium. Besides, the fiddle wasn ' t invented until the 16th century. England, 11th Century: Lady Godiva rides nude through the streets of Coventry Doubtful. If she did, no one thought to mention it until 200 years after it supposedly happened. This legend was bom in the imagination ofRogerofVl ndover in his 1236 Chronicles. Oh, the way -there was no “Peeping Tom” either. France, 18th Century: Marie Antoinette says “Let them eat cake7 and promptly loses her head A case of mistaken identity. Marie never even said “Qu ' Us mangent de la brioche” In his Confessions. Rousseau referred to a “great princess” uttering those fateful words in the early 1740s. Marie was bom in n50. These highlights have been brought to you by Arnold Public Relations. SECOnO YEAR AT STATES With the return of head coach Bob Fenton and assistant coach Roger Klaussen, the Sandwich varsity baseball team has come back to make the state tournament two years in a row. The Blue Knights compiled an overall record of 13-9 and a league record of 10-6. It will be tough to fill the gap the seniors have left for they greatly contributed to this year ' s success. Andy Cahoon was a true team captain and showed his leadership throughout the year, fie was excellent defensively for Sandwich. The most enthusiastic player. Bill Foster, was praised by Coach Fenton as the best outfielder ever to come out of Sandwich. His bat was active with a .329 batting average and 20 RBI ' s. When needed, Peter Donahue always came through. At the end of season he came back with a powerful .348 average. Rob Jones, a starting pitcher, had a 2-0 record, and was second in overall hits and ended up with a .338 batting average. Chris Larochelle was very effective at third base and led the team with home runs. Although Mike Savoia and Tim Burnieika didn ' t see much playing time, they always lifted the teams spirits when things were down. All four players selected to the South Shore League All-Star Team will be returning next year; junior Steve Corradi (two times), junior Brendan Fish, and sophomores Lance Brady and Paul Anacki. Sandwich rolled past Sacred Heart in the first game of the state tournament 20-5. They went on to lose to Horton 8-4 in the most exciting game of the season. The J.V. Baseball Team only had four retiring players from last year ' s team and consisted of mostly freshman. They had a 7-7 record, losing some close one run games which could have easily been wins. One of the best players on the team, Kevin Shea, should contribute greatly to the varsity next year. Tom Burnieika, who had a team high 480 batting average, should also help as well. MacDonald BATTinO FOR A BETTER SEASOn nine letter winners will be returning to the Sandwich Softball team next year, promising a better season for next year. Rainy weather caused many early rain outs, forcing 13 games to be played in 15 school days. The rain allowed for little practice time between games and their overall record of 5-15 is not a reflection of their ability. Sharon Anacki and Shay Perry were elected to the South Shore All Star Team and Kara Peterson led the offense with a .367 batting average. The team is looking forward to a sunny spring season in ' 88. The junior varsity softball team had a successful season with 9 wins and 8 losses. Although the team got off to a late start due to the rainy weather, the team never lost their school spirit. The last game of the season proved to be the most exciting. It was a home game against Scituate and the last inning found the score at 18-11 in favor of Scituate. The team ' s spirit did not dwindle and in the last minutes of the game Sandwich managed to pull in 8 runs and lead their school to a 19-18 victory!! Congratulations to a young team of six sophomores and fourteen freshmen. Look out for this team next year! Front row (I to r): C. Williams, S. Perry, J. Litchfield, M. Earle, B. Sands, D. Glydon, L. The squad, made up of three juniors, one sophomore, and two freshmen, suffered defeats in nine of their first ten matches. It was the team ' s victory over Middleboro in Lakeville that marked the turning point for them. The season came to an outstanding close with the Golf team ranking second place in the South Shore League. Raise your hand if your sure . . . Oowee!! Was he fine! After graduating the first two singles players and the top doubles team from last year, this record is commendable con- sidering the inexperience. Darby MacEacheron filled in the number one singles spot, with Shannon St.Pierre at second and Keith Ro- senbloom at third. These three were the only returning lettermen for Coach Peter Rusty Trimble. Rob Lowrance and Adrian Sarafini formed a tandem at first doubles and Ryan Tedeschi and Eric Sta- hura played together as a second doubles team. The future looks bright for the team with all of this year ' s players returning. The team should be a challenger as one of the top contenders in the South Shore League next year. The team ranked third in the South Shore League, with an overall record of 18-3. Strong singles players were: Katie Dwyer, Michelle Benoit, and Colleen Lynch. Doubles were: Wendy Fleet and Amy Daigneault, Jennifer names and Jill Litchfield. The girls came away with two victories against Dartmouth and nauset in the tournament. They faced their toughest competitor Bishop Feehan, at Wheaton College. Although they fought hard, the match was lost. Special thanks goes to Jessica Donald, team Manager, who gave the team continuous encouragement and an incentive to win. The team will not be losing any seniors this year, so they are looking forward to another excel- lent season in 1988. Chrissy Messier placed 6th in the South Shore League in the 880 event. Heidi and Chrissy Condon, twin sisters who are new students at Sandwich, placed in the South Shore League with their expertise in hurdles and the high jump. With the loss of only one senior, Mary Wegman, Coach O ' Brien believes next year ' s track team will be the best that Sandwich has ever seen. Kneeling {I to r): M. Helms, J. Qiacobbe, M. Baldi, L. Experienced runners such as co-captains Joe Fish and Mark Peterson and 4 x 400 relay team consisting of Rich Murray, Chris Cote, Joe Fish and Mark Peterson made their marks in the Division D Championships in Ashland. Outstanding runner Ted Qiampetro broke the school re- cord for the 2 mile and went on to win this race at the D-Y invitational.
