Field Hockey The 1984 field hockey team entered the South Shore League with high hopes and great expectations. The talented team of 21 players had to adjust to a more physical league and a new coach; Suzanne Ericson assembled the players to form a super team which finished with a winning record of 14-41. The team gained new rivalries with Hanover and Dux- bury, two tough teams in the league. During the sea- son, Sandwich lost two close games to Duxbury, and split with Hanover. There were eight seniors on the squad, led by tri-captains Kim Limieux, Cathy Rich- ard, and Chris Ferrick. All three players were selected to the South Shore League All-Star team, and Kathy Dillen was named an alternate. Sandwich worked hard towards a slot in the State Tournament, and played East Bridgewater to a disappointing 1-0 loss at home. Throughout the season, many people played key roles in the success of the team. The strong defense consist- ed of Annette Baldi, Kristen McGrath, Kathy Dillen, Vicki Westfield, Kathy Morelli, and Chris Ferrick. Fer- rick began playing goal this year and played halfback when Kelly Vigliano moved into the net. The powerful offense was led by Cathy Richard, Kim Lemieux, Tra- cey McHugh, and Maryellen Dwyer. Kristen Balsar, Susan Brown, Kathleen Stephens, Pam McNeil, Lisa Watters, Kim Reis, Nancy Pierce, Ann McGoff, Sarah Strout, and Nancy Fitzpatrick all played well and con- tributed greatly to the team. The future of Sandwich field hockey looks promising with the talent coming from the junior varsity. Front row: Tri-captains C. Ferrick, C. Richard, K. Lemieux, Second row: K. Vigliano, K. Dillen, T. Cross Country Despite the worries of many, the Sandwich Cross Country had no problems competing in the newly entered South Shore League. The team gave Sandwich its first Championship and undefeated league record, 10-0. For this year’s seniors, Carl Hickey, Mike Ahern, and Jeff Downing, it was the fourth consecutive league title. The girls’ squad ran to a very respectable fifth place finish in the more competitive league. Senior Maria Chapman, Regina Lotter, and Cassie Ash led the young squad through seven wins and six loses. This final season before college, for the seniors, will leave many enduring memories of the road trips, THE hill on the home course, and Coach Bill calling everyone up to the line for the tenth 440, among many others. The special impact and disci- pline running and racing has givin to the lives of this team’s members will be carried down many a long road.
