•1 • A School Spirit At Sandwich High; school spirit is demonstrated both individually and collectively. Friend helping friend, participating on an athletic team, and con- tributing to school activities all display this spirit. Spirit develops a sense of pride in all of us, and we all feel united as one. We, the Seniors of Sandwich High, have shown our spirit by recogniz- ing one another as what we are and what we want to be. We leave knowing the tradition of spirit at Sandwich High will continue on by the underclassmen the year to come. 5 7 • 1 Wk 11 13 Junior Prom JUNIOR PROM 1984 “I know just how you feel But this time love’s for real In time it will reveal The special love that’s deep inside of us Will all reveal in time . . Debarge The junior prom was held at the Rof-mar Diplo- mat Club. The hunting atmosphere of wooden ducks and a moosehead proved to be a very romantic one. A delicious and varied buffet was enjoyed by all, and dancing was to the music of Panorama. Molly McArdle was crowned Prom Queen. The prom committee can be proud of the magical prom memories which they helped to create for us to remember always. 14 We, the Class of 1985, face graduation as the strong and unified class they have helped us be- come. We are proud to have accepted the guidance of Mrs. Pearson and Ms. McLaughlin and it is with great respect and thanks that we dedicate the 1985 Lancer. Brenda Morris Dedication When we entered high school four years ago, the Class of 1985 lacked the unity and enthusiasm to successfully participate in traditional school events. As Freshmen, we needed advisors who would be willing to devote endless amounts of time and ener- gy to promote a sense of school spirit withing our class. We have been truly lucky to have Mrs. Su- zanne Pearson and Ms. Justine McLoughlin as our class advisors. Mrs. Pearson and Ms. McLaughlin have combined a generous amount of patience and wisdom in giving the Class of 1985 the guidance and support to de- velop into a well respected and united group of students. Each year, they have taken the time to work closely with many members of our class in building the school spirit we have proudly displayed through the years-at the class outing. Winter Carni- val, Homecoming Day events, and Junior Prom. As our advisors they have encouraged us to pursue our goals and meet challenges with courage and determination. Homecoming On Saturday, October 13, 1984, Sandwich High School hosted its sixth annual home- coming day. It all began the Friday before when the whole school joined in a pep rally to cheer on our competing teams. Each class per- formed a skit and the teams were intro- duced. The spirit was high as everyone left the gym. The soccer team hosted Rockland and the field hockey team hosted Hanover on Sat- urday. Both games were very exciting with the field hockey team coming out with a win while the soccer team bowed to Rockland. As is the tradition, homecoming day ended with a dance at night. The senior members of the court were Kristen Balser and Kim Lemieux. The Homecoming Queen was Brandy Button. f ' rr - rr r Varsity Soccer After 28 years of Cape and Islands Varsi- ty soccer, the Blue Knights moved into the South Shore League II for their 29th year of competition. The Blue Knights ended the season with a deceiving 7-5-3 overall record and a 6-5-3 league record. The team was looking to gain a tourna- ment birth up until the next to last game, which resulted in a 1-1 tie to Cohasset. Kurt Stahura led the team in scoring, with 14 points. Seniors Kirk Hayden and Neale Rathbun were elected to the South Shore League II All-Star team. Owen Gaffney and Kirk Hayden were the team captains for 1984. I Front Row: D. Ash, B. Rathbun, N. Field Hockey The 1984 field hockey team entered the South Shore League with high hopes and great expectations. The talented team of 21 players had to adjust to a more physical league and a new coach; Suzanne Ericson assembled the players to form a super team which finished with a winning record of 14-41. The team gained new rivalries with Hanover and Dux- bury, two tough teams in the league. During the sea- son, Sandwich lost two close games to Duxbury, and split with Hanover. There were eight seniors on the squad, led by tri-captains Kim Limieux, Cathy Rich- ard, and Chris Ferrick. All three players were selected to the South Shore League All-Star team, and Kathy Dillen was named an alternate. Sandwich worked hard towards a slot in the State Tournament, and played East Bridgewater to a disappointing 1-0 loss at home. Throughout the season, many people played key roles in the success of the team. The strong defense consist- ed of Annette Baldi, Kristen McGrath, Kathy Dillen, Vicki Westfield, Kathy Morelli, and Chris Ferrick. Fer- rick began playing goal this year and played halfback when Kelly Vigliano moved into the net. The powerful offense was led by Cathy Richard, Kim Lemieux, Tra- cey McHugh, and Maryellen Dwyer. Kristen Balsar, Susan Brown, Kathleen Stephens, Pam McNeil, Lisa Watters, Kim Reis, Nancy Pierce, Ann McGoff, Sarah Strout, and Nancy Fitzpatrick all played well and con- tributed greatly to the team. The future of Sandwich field hockey looks promising with the talent coming from the junior varsity. Front row: Tri-captains C. Ferrick, C. Richard, K. Lemieux, Second row: K. Vigliano, K. Dillen, T. The team gave Sandwich its first Championship and undefeated league record, 10-0. For this year’s seniors, Carl Hickey, Mike Ahern, and Jeff Downing, it was the fourth consecutive league title. The girls’ squad ran to a very respectable fifth place finish in the more competitive league. Senior Maria Chapman, Regina Lotter, and Cassie Ash led the young squad through seven wins and six loses. This final season before college, for the seniors, will leave many enduring memories of the road trips, THE hill on the home course, and Coach Bill calling everyone up to the line for the tenth 440, among many others. The special impact and disci- pline running and racing has givin to the lives of this team’s members will be carried down many a long road. They also won the Canal Cup for the third time by defeating Bourne 7-3. The team, although a young one, did sur- prisingly well. There were six senior play- ers. Bill Dwyer and Neale Rathbun were the Co-Captains. Senior Brendan Feeley provided support for the goaltenders. Mike Messier was the team’s leading scor- er. A lot of the goal scoring also came from Senior Kurt Stahura and Freshman Steven Corradi. Coach Paul Giandomenico, in his fourth year, has done an excellent job coaching the team on to impressive season. The team skated to the state quarter final game, only to fall short to a strong Bishop Feehan team. Front: S. Corradi, C. Donahue, K. Stahura, D. Ash, N. Rathbun, B. Dwyer (Co-Captains), M. Although they were playing under a new coach, Mr. Robert Woodbury, and in a new league, they adjusted well and really impressed their opponents. They lost two close games to Whitman-Hanson and Dux- bury by one point each, but their spirit and drive kept them in contention for first place. The title wasn’t decided until the last two high intensity games against Cohassett and Norwell in which Sandwich unfortunately lost. Sandwich had beaten these two powerhouses earlier in the season and finished the year in second place, qualifying them for the State tournament. In the State tournament. Sandwich played a down-to-the wire game against Norwell in which Norwell won with a jumper at the buzzer. The team was lead by the two co-captains Kim Lemieux and Cathy Richards, both of whom were selected to the South Shore League All-Star team. Melissa Woodbury and Sandy Nelson keyed the team in the point guard position. A new comer, junior Audrey Connolly was a great asset to the club both in scoring and rebounding. Freshmen Suzie Sykes and Julie Donahue also played key roles on the team. Also supporting the team on and off the court were Amy Siebert, Nancy Fizpatrick, Kara Peterson, Ann McGoff, and Alsion Corradi. The future for the Lady Knights looks very impressive with a lot of young talent coming up. These Blue Knight Hoopsters had to face some very new challenges that came from Sandwich ' s first season in the tough South Shore League. Their 5-11 league record left them fourth in the league standing and a 9-1 overall record Outside the league competition, the young team faired well being undefeated in four contests. The first game of the season was a victory over neighboring Falmouth High. But soon after this convincing win the team fell in its first two league contests. The Christmas tournament proved to be a joyous time for the players. After defeating Sacred Heart. Sandwich was matched against Wareham for the championship game, the Knights revenged last years ' three losses to Wareham by defeating the Vikings for the Christmas Tournament title The new year brought more South Shore Competition. The team proved that Sandwich would be competitive by winning five games and losing three in last minute situations. The young team showed character and maturity throughout the season and proved its place in the new league. The team ' s only returning starter. Mike Sykes, and senior, Fran Conroy, provided leadership in co-captains’ roles. Juniors, Tom Lupone. Peter Tarvis. and Eddie Latham were great assets this year and show great promise for next year’s squad. The other starting player, sophomore Scott Briggs added his own talents to the team. Seniors Tom Harmon, and John Scovill added good shooting ability. The team ' s biggest basketball nut, David DeGregorio, better known as Digger was a fimiliar sight on the court. John Lemire, Paul Connolly, and Danny Beauchemin rounded off the twelve man squad with hustle and good attitudes. For the fourth year Mike O ' Brien and assistant Bob Inman coached the Blue Knight basketball team. This year they proved to another league that they are a team to be reckoned with. 32 Boys Varsity Basketball Back Row: Dave Barrett, Manager, Jeff Heyer, Manager; Paul Connolly; Tom Harmon; Mike Sykes, Co-Capt.; Peter Tarvis; Fran Conroy, Co-Capt.; Mike O’Brien, Coach. SWIM TEAM 1984-85 Was a season of accomplish- ment for many of Sandwich High School’s varsity swimers who proved themselves to be tough competitors in the southern conference. Seniors, Curt Frost, Ellen Curry and Ju- nior, Stacey Maio, were the tri-captains this year. Curt, in his second year as cap- tain, excelled in both the freestyle and backstroke events, but concentrated on freestyle to qualify for sectionals. Tito Milla also qualified for sectionals in both the 100 breastroke and the 50 free- style. Other outstanding swimmers includ- ed David Gregg in freestyle, Chris Cote ' in both backstroke and freestyle, Jeff Haz- ard in breastroke Jeff Callahan in Butter- fly, and Kurt Switzer and Richard Kunkel in distance. The girls deserve special recognition as they must swim in an all boy’s league. Many of their times were extremely com- petitive with the girl’s times in the western part of the state. Stacey Maio was out- standing in the fly; A strong competitor against both boy’s and girls. Ellen Curry, Peggy Campbell, Beth Delia, Heather Lu- cas, Becky Maio, and Jen Frost were also excellent. The loss of David, Jenny, and Joel Kay to Dallas Texas midway through the season was a tough one for the team. David, who holds the school record in 100 Breastroke was elected honorary team captain for his time remaining in Sandwich. Larry Pratt returned to diving this year, qualifying for sectionals, and placing first in almost every meet. Kim Reis was also a strong contender in both diving and 100 breastroke. The final record of theSwim Team was 3- 6-0 which does not reflect the individual accomplishments of Sandwich swimmers led by Coach Dianne Babbit and Assistant Coach Sue Erickson. The Blue Knights, who finished 9-4 in the Cape and Islands League and 1 1-6 overall were in control of becoming three-time Cape and Islands champions right down to the final game against Cape Cod Tech. A win would have sent the team to the state tourney, and more importantly, a third Cape and Islands Championship (shared with Cape Cod Tech and Har- wich). However, Sandwich fell 7-6 to Cape Cod Tech and the strong pitching of Kenny Wlinich. Coach Fenton, completing his final year as coach of the baseball team, was sup- portive until the very last out of the sea- son. He guided the team to another winning season and a very close second in the Cape and Islands League. The team was led by Cape and Island All- Stars John Wallace (.417, 5 HR), Jim Howard (.350, 4 HR), Scott O’Hare (.362, 1 HR), and Rick Cahoon (.417, 1 HR). Some nice defensive plays in the outfield by Charlie Schmelzer are also worth highlighting. Cape and Islands All-Stars Howard and Cahoon will be returning to the 1985 team, along with Fran Conroy, Brian Clif- ford, Matt Beaton, Brendan Feeley, Char- lie Richmond, Dan Hanley, and Charlie Schmelzer, all being ready to tackle the newly adopted South Shore League. Robin Hall, Beth Belcher, Allison Klaasen, and Nancy Kelleher were the nucleus of the team and provided an example of leadership and spirit. Winners of the Cape and Islands league, their biggest rivals were Harwich and Nauset. The week before the tournament. Sandwich overpowered Nauset in a terrif- ic upset. Only one week later, in the first game of the tournament. Sandwich lost to Nauset in a hard-fought game. It was a proud end to a good season. Out of the team came four all-star play- ers: Robin Hall, Allison Klaasen, Beth Belcher, and Chris Ferrick. Bottom left to right: J. Ellis, C. Ferrick, A. Baldi, B. Belcher, M. O’Leary, A. Burlingame, coach 40 Track GIRLS’ TRACK AND RIELD BOY’S TRACK AND FIELD 42 The 1984 Girls’ Track Team had an impressive season with only two close losses to rival Martha’s Vineyard. The team was y oung, well rounded, and strong in its last year in the Cape and Island’s League. Captain Lisa Cen- trella was our javelin thrower (as well as a hurdler). Throwing the discus and shotput were Tracy Neal and Jean-Marie O’Hare. Race after race, the hard work of sprinters Lisa Watters, Julie Donahue, and Sandy Nelson paid off in the 200 and 100 meter races. Points were acheived through the stamina of the place winning 800m runners: Mollie McArdle and Regina Lotter. In the com- petition on every meet. Sandy, Mary, and Alison Corradi were our key 400m runners. In the 1500m, Cassie Ash, A seventh grader, proved that young legs can beat the socks off those upper classmen! Maria Chapman was a determined and strong 3000m racer. Finallly, in the long jump, Julie Donahue was our top jumper, while in the high jump, Michelle Anacki, Karen Snow, and Lisa Watt- ers reached outstanding heights. At the Cape Islands League meet. Sandwich walked off with many trophies and ribbons. Notable achieve- ments include Sandy Nelson, first place 100m; Cassie Ash, first place 1 mile; Maria Chapman, first place 2 mile; and Mary Wegman, first place 300m hurdles. The Girls’ team owes much of its achievement to the dedication and involvement of its coaches: Michael O’Brien and Debbie Allen. The Key factor to a track team’s success is the feeling that one’s coach really cares and wants to better the team in any way possible, spend overtime doing so, and prove just as enthusiastic and spirited as the team members. Through laughter, pain, tears, great effort, and sincere dedication, coaches O’Brien and Allen brought our team together and made us want to win — not just for ourselves, but for one anoth- The 1984 Sandwich Track Team had a fine season under the dedicated and experienced direction of Coaches Mike O’Brien and Debbie Allen. The team suffered two disappointing losses to Martha’s Vineyard, but still man- aged to secure a strong second place in the Cape Islands League by the end of the season. Many individuals on the team gave outstanding perfor- mances in various events and deserve proper recogni- tion. The distance crew was a formidable force (as always). They run well, there are many of them, and they place close together. Their performance lasted for the entire season. In fact, Carl Hickey walked off with the title of Champion Miler at the 1984 Cape Islands League Meet. John Wegman likewise earned recognition as Chamption Two Miler. Bruce Wilcox, Eric Drifmeyer, and Mike Ahern packed it in close behind to bring in those points that add up and can determine a win or loss. Sean Sullivan shows promise as a well rounded distance runner. Phil Cootey also did well in the half mile. In sprinting events, the Boys’ 4x400m relay wound up being sixth best in the state. This winning combination consisted of Scott Hayden, Matt Nicholson, John Weg- man, and Jeff Luff. Curt Frost scored well throughout the season in the high hurdles and high jump. Owen Gaffney earned recognition as the Cape Islands League Champion in the pole vault. Rick Stable handled the discus department and came in second at the League Meet with a distance of 121 feet. Joe Fish shows promise and should do well in future meets in the hurdles, long jump, and triple jump. The two coaches and this year’s captains — Mike Sykes, Carl Hickey, Curt Frost will lead our fearless track team through its first season in the South Shore League. Girls’ Tennis The Sandwich High School varsity girl’s tennis team had an outstanding season and were Cape and Islands league champions. Some players to watch in the upcoming years will be 8th graders Wendy Fleet and most improved player Katie Dwyer, who both played varsity and did quite well. Graduated seniors included Wendy Hag- berg, Becky Lupone, Sandy Fires, and Ann-Laurre Rocher. All played tremen- dous seasons. Karen Weston will be the only returning senior this year. The young team will en- ter the South Shore League, relying on the strengths of Karen Weston, Maryellen Dwyer, Sharon Fires, Fam Curley, Allison Conroy, Wendy Fleet, and Katie Dwyer.
