In develop- ing and maintaining friendships with the teachers and students at SHS, we have matured as individuals and realized our potential for growth and success. This is a time for new beginnings, as we define our goals and look towards taking an active part in an ever-changing world. We carry with us the experiences which have made the past years so special; the good times (the prom, senior activities, parties . . . ) and the bad (final exams, SAT’s, phys. ed. . . . ). The times ahead will be new, exciting, and challenging, but the things we leave behind will always hold an important place in our lives. 39 Over the hills and far away, A little child steals from his morning Wv And under the blossoming apple-tree He lies and he dreams of the things to be: Of battles fought and of victories won, Of wrongs o’erthrown and of great deeds done- y: lOf the valor that he shall prove f some day. ' y ' 95 97 On Saturday, October 16, 1982, Sand- wich High celebrated its fourth annual Homecoming. The festivities began with a parade in the morning. The theme of the 1982 Homecoming parade was “Great Movies” and the class of 1986 took first place with their portrayal of “The Mup- pet Movie”. The Homecoming events continued with the field hockey and soccer games. The teams displayed their fine athletic ability with their wins over Harwich. During half- time of the soccer game, the Sandwich High School Marching Band gave one of their best performances. Homecoming “82” concluded with a semi-formal dance that was well attend- ed. The 1982 Homecoming Queen was senior Robin Westfield. The Queen’s court consisted of seniors Marybeth McHugh and Kristin Suokko; juniors Becky Lupone and Sue Costello; and sophmores. Brandy Button and Tracey McHugh. VARSITY FIELD HOCKEY The 1982 field hockey team again domi- nated the Cape and Islands League, for the third straight year. The preseason up- set over Division I Barnstable, set the tone for the girls’ 12-0-2 season. What looked to be a rebuilding year, with only 3 returning seniors, developed into a no- loss season. After an early season, heart- breaking tie against arch-rivals Harwich, the team defeated their arch rivals 2 to 1 before a Homecoming crowd. At the Cape and Islands league meet the squad won eleven out of a possible fifteen tro- phies and all five first place trophies. The team finished in tenth place in the Catho- lic Memorial Invitational and gained the same ranking in State Division Four. Ju- nior John Wegman and sophmore Mollie McArdle were the strongest runners on the squad. Wegman broke a school re- cord and was the number one runner in the Cape and Islands league. Boasting a fine 13 and 4 overall record and an 11 and 3 league record, the girls tied for second place in the Cape and Islands League and at- tained a seat in the state tournament. This senior contingent had a strong supporting cast especially in the persons of Robin Hall, Kim Lemieux, and Cathy Richards. With Lisa Centrella, Melissa Woodbury, and Denise Grady rounding out the squad, the girls pro- vided a fast, aggressive brand of basket- ball. VARSITY BASKETBALL It would be impossible to discuss the 1982-83 basketball team without men- tioning character. Beyond their consider- able aggregate physical skills, this team has consistently demonstrated a chemis- try of mutucil respect and admiration that branded them a success regardless of their record. They have achieved a level of competency rarely seen in team sports in their demonstration of tenacity, disci- pline, sacrifice and interaction. Playing one of the toughest schedules in the school’s history, the Knights compiled a 12-5 overeill season and qucilified for the state tournament by winning six of their last seven g«imes. Perhaps their single fin- est display of team basketball came in the second half of the Nantucket game when they held the Wheilers scoreless for five Standing (L to R): Coach O’Brien, E. Watters, R. Seniors Joe Pilong and Shawn Moynihan equaled Morgan’s ability by controlling the boards throughout the season. S hawn demonstrated outstanding floor play in setting a school record for assists. Mark Palmer and Sean Feeley were senior point guards who effectively handled the most critical spot on the offensive end of the floor. Defensively Palmer also drew the outstanding scorer in the opposing line-up and established himself as a “stop- per”. Junior center Scott Hayden gave Sandwich an inside threat with his clutch shooting. In key games against Harwich cind Ncintucket, Hayden shot an incredi- ble 15-22 enroute to scoring 21 points in both games. Scott O’Hare was the first forward substi- tute and took some spot starts. He dem- onstrated outstanding offensive potentied and should do very well next year. Junior Russell Held was the most improved player on the team emd will be counted on next year. Injuries curtailed the perfor- mances of senior co-captain Eric Watters and junior guard Bob Briggs although both of them made important constribu- tions to the season. VARSITY BASEBALL The Sandwich Varsity Baseball team compiled a record of 13-1 to win the Cape and Islands Championship. The lone loss of the season was a 1-0 defeat to the Nauset Warriors. However, Nauset was the later victim when Sandwich crushed the Warriors 10-2 to clinch the Championship. Leading the hitting parade for Sandwich was John Wcillace (.500), Scott O’Hare (.429), Mark Palmer (.380), Jon Wood- bury (.327), and Fritz Lupone (.308). The pitching was led by Brett Valentini and Scott O’Hare who both compiled 5-0 re- cords. Five members of the Blue Knights were selected to the Cape and Islands All Star Teams (Jon Woodbury, Tim Hennessey, Mark Palmer, John Wallace, and Brett Veilentini). In the tournament, the team defeated Duxbury 2-1 before losing to State Champion Ap- ponoquet. Although three starters gradu- ated, 1983 should be a strong year for Sandwich with many players with varsity experience returning. Seniors Lori Lu- ciani (.511) and Mary Broussard (.473) were selected to both the Cape and Is- lands All Star Team and the All Cape All Star Team. Junior Margie Kudera was selected to the Cape and Islands All Star Team and Sophomore Robin Hall was selected to the All Cape All Star Team. JV BASEBALL Front Row (left to right): C. Richmond, K.
