Like the character of the restless sea and the nature of an eternally flowing stream, we are a class of individual- ists with continually changing ideas and interests. As we broaden our scope of the world, our attitudes and aspirations mature and merge with those of today’s ever- moving current of society, rather like a rivulet joins with another and eventually forms a river which flows into the unfathomable depths of the ocean. Possessing the color of fresh concepts, the Class of 1980 will enter this ocean of society with a brilliant splash. ina Tj 3 Riding three hours on a chartered bus . . . sharing exotic lemonade . . . hearing “Be a Clown! Mr. William Sangster gave of his time and talent to make the floor shows at our dances a total success. “Boogie Bill” coaxed the talent in our class out of hiding, organized the show, and per- formed memorably on the stage. 102 Our yearbook advisor, Mrs. Jeannie Wallin, has made the orga- nization and layout of the book much easier and more enjoyable. Her assistance and sense of humor have been invaluable in shar- ing with us our panic over deadlines and our pride in publishing the 1980 Lancer. We all appreciate Mr. James Murphy’s dedica- tion as a friend and a counselor. His excellent sense of humor has made him one of our fa- vorite teachers. Howev- er, his wit is not limited to the classroom; he has been irreplacable as an emcee for various activi- ties. Because of his showmanship and genu- ine interest in his stu- dents, Mr. Murphy de- serves our admiration and gratitude. J Soccer | I J 4 Varsity Soccer Standing: W. Walker, manager, J. Santos, D. Team unity was slow in developing and midway through the season, after four Cape Island Championships in the last six years, the Knights faced a break in tradition of not going to the tournament. Rapid regrouping turned obstacles into challenges instead of ex- cuses, and the team finished second in the league with a re- cord of 8 - 3 - 1. John Pagani, Jeff Santos, Walter O ' Brien, and Jack Manning received All - Cape Island honors John Pagani, Jeff Santos, and Wal- ter O ' Brien were also chosen to the Cape Cod Times All - Star team. Sandwich defeated South Shore Vocational High School 4 - 1, in their first tour- nament game, and although they were enthusiastically backed in Duxbury they fell in a 2 - 1 contest versus this de- fending State Championship team. Senior John Pagani was elected to the All - Eastern Mass . excelling in both offense and defense. The team proudly represented the school during another successful season un- der Coach Harry Evans. Field Hockey The Sandwich Blue Knighties opened their successful season with a series of high scoring vic- tories including a 13 - 0 victory over Cape Tech. The girls carried on their annual rivalry with the defending league cham- pions Harwich Rough Ri- derettes. The climax of the season proved to be the Homecoming Game betwen the two teams. Closely matched Durfee High School produced two exciting meets and Sandwich experienced their greatest success by defeating Blue Hills twice during the sea- son. The team is still young and building, but the growing interest in swimming at Sandwich is re- flected by the large number of participating team members. 115 Varsity Ice Hockey left to right 1st row: E. The team’s attitude this year is one of revenge against a once dominating team from Har- wich. In the season opener, on their home ice, the Knights topped the Rough Riders in a close match, to gain a significant 5-4 victory, and prove they have the potential to snatch the title. Sandwich then went on to beat their all - around rivals, Nauset. Senior Steven Dolan is the team’s captain, and juniors Tim Messier and Todd Kelley hold positions as co - captains. Next year the team is sure to feel the loss of its seniors due to graduation. Seniors on the team include, Myles Ferrick, Allie Evans, Steve Dolan, Peter Cooke, Steve Buckland, Wal- ter O’Brien, Bob Messier and Bob Stobbart. 1st row: J Dodge, E Peters, M Cooke, L. The 4- by- 110 relay team, Sly Dicker- son, Charlie Peterson, Jim Mar- tin, and Dwayne Burgess, re- mained undefeated throughout the season. The championship was the result of a superb team effort. The Cape Island League record: 7 wins, 1 loss. Homecoming The first Homecoming of Sandwich High School was October 25 and 26. The spectacular celebration began with a pep rally on Friday night followed by a parade Saturday morning. Both the Sandwich High School varsity soccer team and varsity field hockey displayed their outstanding ability in their games against Harwich. At half time a first place award was presented to the class of 1984 for their superior participation in Spirit Week. Homecoming ’79 con- cluded with a semi - formal Saturday night. Chosen for Homecoming Queen was Tara DiPersio. The queen’s court consisted of seniors, Margo Thurston and Kris Herndon; juniors, Susan Milroy and Sara Colton; and sophomores, Debbie Leonard and Elaine Pender.
