Springfield. We are here to party. Fancy horses, eight foot Schlitz cans, mysterious broken ice-cream cones, and people stopping rides to heed the call of American Standard — these are just some of the memories the Class of 1978 have of our trip to the Eastern States Exposition. When we first arrived, the sight of the huge playground made us somewhat hesitant, but the smell of fried dough, the whizzing of rides, and the screams of excitement soon turned our minds childish again. The Haunted House and the Enterprise were among the favorites, and many of us flocked to them. Of course there were some who couldn’t get by the sweet-talking con-artists with the silly little balls, and soon saw their pockets turn from green money to white emptiness. The pattering of our feet came slowly to a halt as we wearily climbed onto the bus with our goodies of the day. We gave a smile of contentment and a sigh of relief and headed home. Springfield and the Eastern States Exposition were now part of the past. 13

Precious and Few . . . White arbors decked with pink roses... Smiles captured by a camera’s flash... The smell of baby’s breath and carnations... The blur of pastel dresses on a crowded dance floor... The excitement as the queen and her court are chosen... Our Junior Prom... Precious and few are the moments we two can share. Quiet and blue like the sky I’m hung over you. And if I can’t find my way back home, it just wouldn’t be fair. Precious and few are the moments we two can share.

There are faces I remember . . . During his lifetime, Carl Hiler was a faithful servant of Sandwich government and education. He began his service to Sandwich in 1949 when he was elected Town Moderator, and in 1967 he was elected Town Selectman and Assessor, posts he held until his death in 1976. Mr. Hiler used his influence effectively during his years of public service to efficiently run the town government and promote education. Carl Hiler cared about Sandwich and its citizens; he was especially concerned with the town’s youth. The class of 1978 wishes to recognize Mr. Hiler’s sincere interest and contributions to our town’s welfare and to our school system.
