Text from Pages 1 - 168 of the 1978 volume:

Just a song before I go Lancer 1978 Sandwich High School East Sandwich, Massachusetts 02537 Right back where we started from . . . Once upon a time a group of bewildered, wide-eyed, six year olds stepped onto big yellow buses and made their way to two rooms of the Henry T. Wing School. They came all dressed up in their new clothes from the Sears and Roebuck catalog; the boys in white shirts and cardigan sweaters and the girls in newly shined patent leather shoes, white anklet socks, and flowery dresses. The date was September 8, 1965, the first day of school for the class of 1978. Our first grade teachers, Mrs. Adams and Mrs. Strain, taught us how to read and write, but, more importantly, taught us how to learn. During that year Puff, Dick, and Jane became our closest friends as we saw them run all over creation. (Did they ever walk?) 2 The invaluable experience we gained from “lining up” everytime we left the room just might come in handy some day. Who knows when we might have to single file our way out of somewhere? As first graders the time from spelling to recess seemed an eternity to us and twelve years was totally incomprehensible. But those twelve years have gone by and now we’ll leave Sandwich High School slightly less bewildered than when we came. Of the students who filled our first grade rooms, twenty six remain to graduate, in single file of course. 3 There are places I remember all my life, though some have changed, some forever not for better, some have gone and some remain. All these places had their moments with lovers and friends I still can recall. Some are dead and some are living. In my life I’ve loved them all. 4 The Class of 1978 is the third class to graduate from the new Sandwich High School. Although we are proud of our new facility, the special personality of the Henry T. Wing School, its unheated classrooms that gradually warmed as the class progressed, its cafeteria that also served as an auditorium, and its main stairways always chaotic, remains forever in our memory. The Henry T. Wing School has been vacant since our departure in February of 1976, when our enthusiasm, energy, and pride were transferred to our new Sandwich High School. Soon classrooms here became full and warm, students took advantage of the remarkable facilities, and new stairways became crowded. This class has played a significant role in creating a new personality for Sandwich High School. Our contributions, however, are only a beginning. The personality of Sandwich High School, like the Class of 1978, will grow, mature, and change as time passes. 5 I get by with a little help from my friends . . . Precious and Few . . . White arbors decked with pink roses... Smiles captured by a camera’s flash... The smell of baby’s breath and carnations... The blur of pastel dresses on a crowded dance floor... The excitement as the queen and her court are chosen... Our Junior Prom... Precious and few are the moments we two can share. Quiet and blue like the sky I’m hung over you. And if I can’t find my way back home, it just wouldn’t be fair. Precious and few are the moments we two can share. Springfield. We are here to party. Fancy horses, eight foot Schlitz cans, mysterious broken ice-cream cones, and people stopping rides to heed the call of American Standard — these are just some of the memories the Class of 1978 have of our trip to the Eastern States Exposition. When we first arrived, the sight of the huge playground made us somewhat hesitant, but the smell of fried dough, the whizzing of rides, and the screams of excitement soon turned our minds childish again. The Haunted House and the Enterprise were among the favorites, and many of us flocked to them. Of course there were some who couldn’t get by the sweet-talking con-artists with the silly little balls, and soon saw their pockets turn from green money to white emptiness. The pattering of our feet came slowly to a halt as we wearily climbed onto the bus with our goodies of the day. We gave a smile of contentment and a sigh of relief and headed home. Springfield and the Eastern States Exposition were now part of the past. 13 There are faces I remember . . . During his lifetime, Carl Hiler was a faithful servant of Sandwich government and education. He began his service to Sandwich in 1949 when he was elected Town Moderator, and in 1967 he was elected Town Selectman and Assessor, posts he held until his death in 1976. Mr. Hiler used his influence effectively during his years of public service to efficiently run the town government and promote education. Carl Hiler cared about Sandwich and its citizens; he was especially concerned with the town’s youth. The class of 1978 wishes to recognize Mr. Hiler’s sincere interest and contributions to our town’s welfare and to our school system. from the places in my past. . . Although the alumni are not traditionally included in the Sandwich High School LANCER, the class of 1978 wishes to dedicate this page to our friends, the class of 1977, who left us with so many happy memories of the years we spent together at Sandwich High School. The Graduates of 1977 are now furthering their education at various colleges and universities or pursuing their careers in the working world. Ken Beltame-Work Joel Bess-C.C.C.C. Clare Kudera-McGill University James Young-Work This One’s For You We, the class of 1978, dedicate our yearbook to Mr. John Chisholm. Mr. Chisholm is more than a principal in the traditional sense of the word; his contributions to Sandwich High School far surpass his administrative responsibilities. Mr. Chisholm has a sincere concern for students, their interests, their problems, and their futures. This genuine concern results in his active support of all school activities from athletic events to Honor Society Banquets. Mr. Chisholm’s enthusiastic involvement, faith, and pride in Sandwich High School serves as an example that encourages students to take pride in themselves and in their school. It is to him, therefore, with great respect, that we dedicate LANCER 1978 in appreciation of his sincere concern, enthusiastic support, and pride in Sandwich High School. i I for your patience during the chaotic first two weeks of school. . . for keeping the college catalogues in alphabetical order. . . for putting up with frantic, confused seniors applying to college. . . for processing last minute applications. . . for correcting all our misspelled words. . . and for your terrific spnse of humor and concern for students. Meeting the Sandwich students for the first time, particularly the F Troops was a tremendously exciting experience. Mrs. Sandra Feeley Mrs. Ann Palmer I’d have liked to have been an archeologist; is there a difference between digging in the ground instead of people ' s heads? Miss Jan Semonian My favorite book? MOBY DICK; I think Captain Ahab is fascinating. Mr. Harry Evans If I hadn ' t been an English teacher, I would have been a history or physical education teacher. Mr. Bruce Stanford If I could teach only one book, it would be RETURN OF THE NATIVE; I just marvel at Thomas Hardy ' s way with words. 22 Mrs. Gretchen Webster If I hadn’t been an English teacher, I would have gone on the pro golf circuit. Naturally, being somewhat hesitant to shoulder such a great responsibility, we graciously passed it on to a larger, more knowledgable group of people: the entire class of 1978. To our surprise this responsibility also proved burdensome to this learned group of students. It is this staff’s opinion that the difficulty in choosing senior superlatives stems from one simple, inescapable fact. Seniors are superlative in every way. The Sandwich High Band, under the directio n of Mr. Ed Heywood, had their most successful year this season. After winning their first parade in Hyannis by blowing the other bands right onto the sidewalks, they were off and marching. Between parades and concerts the band raised $20,000 for a trip to Disney World in Florida. After their trip to Florida, they competed in the Southeastern Massachusetts Band Competition in Walpole. ■t ' I - ' ; Illt ' ltlt L«r - ; rxJ — i ' 1 k 1 ii 1 I IT ' ' J f «• ■ roni B 1 linBli ' i -BliliitljMMl II Newspaper Staff Literary Magazine Staff First Row; Lisa Barr. Despite being a young team, Sandwich finished second in the Cape and Islands League, behind arch-nemesis Nauset. The Blue Knights we re led by senior captains, John Walker and Rich Leydon. The Knights’ high-powered offense was led by Matt Bridges, who was the second leading scorer on the Cape. The defense was awesome. The Knights allowed only eight goals while scoring forty-three. The most disappointing loss of the season came at the hands of Masconomet in the first round of the Eastern Massachusetts Division II Tournament. However the Knights are a young team and many expect a tournament berth next year. Players selected to the All-Cape squad were John Walker, Rich Leydon, Matt Bridges, Mike Finnerty, and Eric Milroy. . The Sandwich High School Swim Team did a commendable job during their first year of competition under the coaching of Mrs. Babbit. Caroline and Sue Freitas, Bruce Kingsbury, and Richard Leydon were the top swimmers. Because all but one team member will be returning next year, another fine season is expected. Y Ta Tnber thetiwes of our lives... It’s The Gong Show! Amatuer talent was displayed at its best during The Gong Show, sponsored by the class of 1978. Mr. Murphy, who had the honor of being master of ceremonies, began the evening with a barrel of laughs. The highly amused audience marveled at “Robert Bedford, ” while the High Society Chicks clucked their way into our hearts. The Adonises from Muscle Beach bulged their way around the stage until the audience could handle no more. The judges, Mrs. Coggeshall, Mrs. Palmer, and Mr. Sangster, seemed to be more interested in the daily news than the show. But the joke was on them as their act was met by the ringing of the gong, rung by no-one but the king himself. As the night wore on, the Waltons bid a final farewell and a final farewell, (and a final farewell), until the curtain mercifully closed. 136 Winter Carnival The Winter Carnival for 1978, sponsored by Sandwich High School’s numerous classes and organizations, turned ou t to be a great success. The evening was filled with smiling faces of young and old alike. There were a number of booths in operation and one hardly knew where to start losing money first. The most likely place was where the crowd gathered to watch Mr. Earle succumb to smiling, soft-ball-wielding youths. Other favorite faculty members, as well, were persuaded to brave the torrent. Dart-throwing, flour-blowing, and space-walking were also popular, as the young can attest. A stereo. Bruins tickets. SPUSH and an autographed basketball from the Celtics were among the top prizes given away. Hot dogs and all sorts of baked goods were being sold so that no one would go hungry.
