The over-all record was 8 wins, 2 losses, and 1 tie. The team was led by Co-captains Pam Whimey and Mary Mahoney. The offense played very well together , and each player of the forward line scored imponant goals when needed . Pam Whitney was leading scorer with 7 goals. Other scorers were: Laurie Schmelzer, 4 goals; Nancy O ' Hara, 3 goals; Mary Mahoney, 1 goal; Velia Pola, 1 goal; and Mary Santos, 1 goal. The new defense: Kathy King, Debbie King, Deedee Lewis, Nancy O ' Hara, and lanet Scovill - with the only experienced player - Jean Sibson, did an outstanding job. The scoreless tie came in the playoff game with the Upper Cape League Champion, Dennis- Yart- mouth. A second place finish and a bid to the state soccer tournament were perhaps the highlights of the season. How- ever, one cannot overlook the double victory over Dennis- Yartmouth. These two victories were most satisfying! This outstanding season was achieved through three things , Pride , Desire , and Dedication to hard work. With eight returning starters, six of which are sophomores, the future seems indeed bright. Winslow, Coach Inman The 1973-74 basketball season for Sandwich High School was one of furstration and disappointment. The team’s 5-13 record is not a true indication of the caliber of the team. A 2 point overtime loss to St. Anthony ' s early in the season seemed to set the tempo for the year. The team lost several close games including two games that could have gone either way against State Tournament-bound teams, Chatham and Nauset. Adding to the season ' s frustration was an injury to Senior co-captain Brian Oliver, in the Martha’s Vineyard game, forcing him to miss the remainder of that game as well as the five games which fol- lowed. Senior co-captain Randy Lewis and Darren Murphy performed well in the back court while Senior Dick Winslow was an able reserve at forward hitting on of his infrequent shots. An optimistic point of the season was the fine play of Sophomore starters, John Hendy and Matt Maho- ney, who will be counted on heavily next season. Another bright spot of the season was the strong finish of Junior David Dinklage who scored in double figures in his last four games and will be a strong per- former next season. Although this season did not turn out as well as expected , the valuable experience gained by the younger players means Sandwich will have one of its most experienced returning teams in recent years.
