These victories show the great potential of future cross country teams at Sandwich. Honors were given out to three freshmen. Although the team ended up with a respectable 7-6-1 record, it was close to qualifying for the Eastern Mass. Soccer Tourney. After losing a heartbreaker at Nauset, the team had trouble recovering - but did so in the season final, defeating Harwich 6-2 for a winning season. The team was a blend of lettermen, who back- boned the team, and a group of young players, who improved rapidly and gave us strength on the field and on the bench. Tom Miller and Bill Hendy were the co-captains. Tom led the team in hustle and spirit and was our outstanding player. Bill led the team in scoring, with 15 goals scored in 14 games, while Norm Weekes and Gerry DeConto had 12 and 8 goals respectively. Bill Parks and Bill Troyanos took care of the goalie duties very well. Chuek Burke, Chris Wood, and John Hendy made an excel- lent fullback combination. Miles Hickey and Dave DeConto were Tom Miller ' s side kicks at half- back - both, just great - while Randy Lewis and Roy Thibideau worked overtime - hustling and setting up their front-line mates for scores. Despite the fact that the team was plagued with in- juries and sickness, it remained a contender for the league crown until near the end of the season. Loss of Judy Kosarick with a knee injury and Debra Lewis with an ap- pendectomy, hurt the over-all strength of the varsity when the team was playing their best basketball. The varsity squad was predominately a Junior Class group, with Laurie Schmelzer, Jean Sibson, Pamela Whit- ney, Mary Mahoney, Heidi MacDonald, and Ann Hoxie. Younger players on the varsity and junior varsity teams were Velia Pola, Gayle Elvander, Mary Ellen Kudera, Judy Hendy, Dede Lewis, Debra King, Nancy O ' Hara, and Lynn Gourley. Although falling short of making any high position in the league, it was an exciting year. Close games were lost to Chatham, Bourne, and Nauset. The team played an excellent game at the end of the season to beat St. Anthony’s in the Bay State Tour- ney by one point in overtime. The great scoring efforts of Bill Hendy, Tom Miller, Chris Wood, and Brian Oliver in combination with the powerful defensive actions of Dan Ring could have produced a winning team; but between bad luck and bad refereeing, we ' ll have to wait until next year. Randy Lewis, who played great ball when he substituted as guard, will add to the great potential of next year’s team. 70 sponsored by COUNTRY ACRES MOTEL B0Y8 ' JUNIOR VARSITY BASKETBALL FIRST ROW: J, Hendy, R. This year the Freshman Basketball Team enjoyed a highly successful campaign mainly for two rea- sons. First, the elementary and junior high basketball programs are producing a better grade player. Second, these Freshmen wanted to play; they brought determination and enthusiasm to the program. We started out slowly losing two of our first three games against a strong Bourne team, but after these games the individuals became a team and were unbeaten for the remainder of the year ending up with a 9 - 2 record. There were many highlights to this year but space does not allow us to present all of them. The victories against a strong D-Y team really added to the confidence of the team. The strength of our club - rebounding with Finerty, Miller, and Troyanos providing the bulk; fine team shooting led by Kosarick, Murphy, and Mahoney; the defense with Schmeizer, Kosarick, Mahoney, and Murphy - meant quite a bit to our 1-2-2 slide. One special note should be added to compliment a fine basketball player. Matt Mahoney, one of our Co-Captains; the other Captain was Jamie Miller, Matt has demonstrated that he has the ability and tools to be an excellent basketball player - he shoots rebounds, plays defense, and is not afraid to work for the team. These along with a good attitude can only add up to Matt leaving his mark on the Cape Basketball scene. The reserves who continuously worked hard all year were Phil Oliver, Tim Birch, George Stanley, and Karl Uggerholt. 72 BASKETBALL CHEERLEADERS LEFT TO RIGHT: D. Luciani, D. Wallace, C.
