Coach Earle led the Knighties on to their third consecutive year as champions, for which they are truly grateful. Goal scoring this year was done by Jean Velsor 1 1 , (including 5 in one game); Pam Whitney, 8; Cathy Ward and Laurie Schmelzer 2, and Marilyn Gilfoy . The team worked its way to the top with the well-played, important game of the season, Nauset. The team will be losing only one senior, Marilyn Gilfoy, so that next year they should have another successful season. Sponsored by Chase-McQuade Realty The Village Center Bottoms up! Although good ability and experience were on the Blue Knights side, intrasquad conflicts, and a lack of that extra effort kept the Sandwich hooters from making a bid for the title. Bill Hendy, although hampered by a leg injury, led the scoring with 10 goals. Bob Crowe, a senior and Tom Miller were standouts for the Knights; Crowe being tagged as an All-Cape fullback. The highlight of the season was the game with Nauset under the lights at Sagamore Field. Sandwich can look forward to many more twilight games. Nine seniors, including co-captains MacDonald and O’Connell will be lost through graduation. We should all hope for the best for the ’72 season. The offense spearheaded the attack by putting in a total- of 15 goals in their 7 games, with good showings by Jim Ellis, Randy Lewis, and B. J. Lamb. The defense held up their end of the fight, holding the opposition to only 5 goals. Instrumental in this effort were Greg Spofford and Dave Morrow, with 4 shut outs by goal keeper, Steve Gourley. Next year, these players will be valuable to the team and from what we saw this season, look out! JUNIOR VARSITY Sponsored by Marshland Restaurant Crow Farm TOP: M. Newhall, D. Morrow, R. BOYS’ VARSITY BASKETBALL The Sandwich High basketball team experienced its most successful season in quite some time. The Blue Knights finish- ed on top of the Cape and Islands League with a 13-1 mark, losing only to Martha’s Vineyard on the Vineyard hardwood. This qualified our boys for the Cape Cod Principals’ Tour- nament, in which they defeated Falmouth; but then lost to Barnstable, a higher class team in the finals. In the State Tournament the Knights were stopped in the first game by Ashland. Co-Captains John Ahonen and Steve Gallant did great jobs in leading a successful team with an unselfish attitude. While Ahonen was averaging 16.9 points per game, he swept the boards clean and shot a blistering 57% from the floor; the highest schoolboy percentage in southeastern Mass. The 6-3 forward placed fourth on the Cape and Islands All-Star team, and fifth on the All-Cape team. Tom Stoll, a 6-4 center, averaged 17-4 points per game to lead all Sandwich scorers. Not enough can be said about his defensive ability, as he continually intimidated opponents and blocked shots. StoU placed sixth on the Cape and Islands All-Star team, and seventh on the All-Cape team. Bin Hendy, a 6-2 forward, averaged 10-8 points per game, and contributed his share of rebounding. He’ll be back to burn up the league next year. The key to this year’s success actually lies in our guards: Steve Gallant and Terry O’Connell, with able assistance from Tom Miller and Dan Ring. The under-rated Gallant quarter- backed the team throughout the season, without getting a continuous chance to demonstrate his outside shooting ability. Congratulations should be extended to coach Bob Inman, who managed to weld the separate parts of the Sandwich machine into one solid unit. Good Luck to him in this next season! It should be considered a highly successful season since seven letter girls graduated from last year’s Cape Cod Championship team, leaving few experienced var- sity players. The team improved slowly as the season pro- gressed with underclass girls Pat Stanley, Judy Kosarick, Laurie Schmelzer, Pam Whitney, Jean Sib- son, Mary Mahoney, and Linda Serodio playing im- portant parts, along with Seniors Marilyn Gilfoy and Robin Vance. Experience gained by juniors Debra Lewis, Donna Santos, Debra Elvander, a few sopho- mores and freshmen on the Junior Varsity team should help in making a championship contending team for next year. Cathy Ward was a very capable manager; ably assisted by Marsha Adams.
