In the following pages, we have tried to captxire a few moments of friendship. Baseball The 1967-1968 baseball season brought our Sandwich boys the first championship in over thirty years. Winning the Cape and Islands title was the end of a campaign which saw the Blue Knights run up a total of 13 straight victories before losing to Provincetown (3-2) in the final game of the season. This 13-1 record, the best for Coach Fenton in five years, gave the Sandwich nine a berth in the Eastern Mass State Tournament where they lost a 10-4 decison to a highly talented Dennis -Yarmouth team. Special recognition goes to team captain Billy Russell and pitcher Paul Miller. Billy ' s leadership and desire to win were responsible for a team attitude Barnstable 1 that wouldn ' t accept defeat. Paul won a total of seven games against such teams as Barnstable, Bourne, Harwich, Nauset and Provincetown. To all members of this championship team Coach F enton gives his thanks for a job well done. Sandwich 1 The 1968 soccer season was not a remarkable Barnstable 2 Sandwich 2 season record-wise, with the final results showing Chatham 1 Sandwich 0 3-7-2. However, by the of the season the skills of the team matched the enthusiasm and spirit of the Harwich 1 Sandwich 0 Dennis -Yarmouth 3 Sandwich 1 players. The 1-0 victory at Dennis -Yarmouth was Falmouth 3 Sandwich 3 the highlight of the season and is an omen of things Nauset 0 Sandwich 0 to come. With only three Seniors on the squad we Barnstable 0 Sandwich 0 are all looking forward to next year, although our Chatham 2 Sandwich 0 tri-captains, Pete Russell, Fred Passaro and Pat Harwich 1 Sandwich 1 Jenkins are sure to be missed as they worked hard Dennis-Yarmouth 0 Sandwich 0 and were good leaders. Falmouth 3 Sandwich 1 Mike Miller, Gary Willoughby, Peter Russell, and Pat Jenkins represented Sandwich well at the All Cape Soccer Exhibition. With a number of veterans returning, things are looking up for soccer at Sandwich High. Sandwich 57 Basketball The Sandwich High School basketball team finished its 68- 69 season with an overall record of 5 wins and 13 losses. It was a year of good ball games and bad ones, of good shots and bad ones, of good calls and bad ones; but always one of top Bourne 61 Sandwich 61 effort from all on the team. Alumni 49 Sandwich 61 In pre-league play. Sandwich suffered two close losses to Bristol 51 Sandwich 58 Bourne, making our record 2-2 going into league play. A Bourne 69 Sandwich 57 tight victory over Provincetown and two ballgames in which Vineyard 67 Sandwich 55 we completely outclassed Bristol Aggies and South Shore P-Town 53 Sandwich 64 Yoke along with our game of the year against Harwich, Harwich 91 Sandwich 60 here in Sandwich, highlighted the rest of the season. Nantucket 71 Sandwich 50 Pat Jenkins and Pete Russell will be missed by our Nauset 73 Sandwich 64 team, o f course, for Mr. Outside and Mr. Inside played Chatham 71 Sandwich 53 some strong ball games. Nino Pola ' s scoring and rebounding Vineyard 69 Sandwich 44 along with the fine steady play of Mike Miller will be back P-Town 77 Sandwich 56 next year to strengthen the team. Gary Flynn and our Kiddie So . Shore 33 Sandwich 73 Korps will also be back to bring home a little better record. Coach Ed Zion, manager Dianne Pola. Sandwich 41 The Blue Knights started the season off well, winning Falmouth 24 Sandwich 45 their first game against Falmouth, 41-24. This first victory Barnstable 30 Sandwich 40 set the ' pace as the girls enjoyed success after success. D-Y 39 Sandwich 52 defeating all opponents as they rebounded, passed, and Bourne 26 Sandwich 44 scored their way to a league championship. Alumni 5 Sandwich 73 The girls defeated every team they played, and finished ORRHS 21 Sandwich 42 the season with a 22-2 record, as two teams, Provincetown Bourne 28 Sandwich 60 and Chatham, each succeeded in outscoring the Knighties once (however, the Sandwich girls enjoyed victories over V ineyard 26 Sandwich 37 P-Town 20 Sandwich 32 both these teams to determine the championship). Harwich 27 Sandwich 60 Senior co-captains Pat McKeon and Peg Alvezi helped Nantucket 21 Sandwich 40 the team in many ways, and their leadership will be missed next year. However, Coach Zion looks forward to another Nauset 30 Sandwich 33 Chatham 25 Sandwich 54 successful season with the Knighties who will be returning Vineyard 16 Sandwich 18 when next season rolls around.
