Although their prime goal is the actual intellectual or practical education of each student, the faculty is instrumental in fostering in them a desire for responsibility or participation in social and athletic events, helping the students plan their futures, and acting as counselors when personal problems arise. The members of the faculty who coach or direct athletic teams help boys find the way to wholesome recreation, constructive competition, good sportsmanship and physical heartiness. Others, in sponsoring clubs and chaperoning school social activities, have helped students de- velop self-confidence and leadership and have offered an opportunity for the students to asso- ciate as a group outside the classroom. The entire staff willingly offers tips to stu- dents who have questions about their future pro- fessions or schools of higher learning and sincerely tries to help the students overcome troublesome and disturbing problems. I .., . , s ' l Q 'S mi , i A , El - 4f,11W4'Qf, W Www? wif A variety of extra-curricular sports is offered to stimulate wholesome recreation, foster good sportsmanship and co-operation, develop physical strength, provide competi- tion, and increase leadership and responsi- bility among the boys on the squads. The competition is conducted on two levels, interscholastic and intramural. The interscholastic program is centered in the Buckeye Conference games but often involves regional, district, and state competition. Groups of boys within the school organize to form the intramural squads, creating com- petition and a keen interest in athletics within the school. In addition to the football, basketball, swimming, tennis, golf, and track teams, a wrestiing team was organized this year, form- ing a strong nucleus for future development interscholastically and intramurally in the sport. Recognition is given to the boys par- ticipating in the sports and their faculty coaches. We closed our books to attend the Swan Club show, Foreign Intrigue , and the Senior Class dance, Hobo Conventlon , and watch the seniors display their talents in Pink Magic. 66 Our swimming team was outstanding, cap turing first spot in the dlstrlct and fourth in the state, but we were even prouder as SOPH OMORES when they placed second in Ohio The Dramatics Club produced the Little Dog Laughed and the seniors soon followed with their dance, Broadway Beat All of us cheered the basketball team as they fought to first place in the area class AA tournament, and then we loaned talents to pro duce the Variety Revue of 1955 Tom Neumeyer as .lullus Caesar and Phyllis Becker as Calpurnla reigned over the Latin banquet We were proud to see girls of our class swimming in the Swan Club's Tell Me a Tale, and we watched the ' '- '1 II. .f22 ' . . . Your feet have worn my stairways down You have carved your initials in my desks Boys and girls have made, and broken, so many dates in my halls, that I can't begin to remember how many I remember the band concerts, senior plays, talent shows, A Cap pella Choir concerts in the auditorium. Many, many games were played, and parties and dances held in my gym. I wonder how many frogs and worms have been dissected in my biology room? No more hue, haec, hoc's will come from my Latin quarter or strange odors from the chemistry lab. I will miss the steady clicking of the typewrlters in my typing rooms, the unexpected bursts of laughter from the 98 classrooms and the tlptoeing and h h hs my library You will no longer decorate my halls gally to announce a dance or big game No more stu dents will stop to read my bulletin boards and turn away happily because they got a part in the senior play or made Glee Club or sadly because they didnt make Swan Club or choir All of my students have left me better and smarter than when they came to me You en rlched your life with knowledge and friendships I am losing you now, but I will always re member you students who learned, fell In love, and had sorrows and goys, here In my halls. X v if ,2 -r 52571 'Z' 'N Z X555 -0 f .7 wal by Gary Bradley The sun beat down unmercifully on the hard baked earth There was no movement or sound The sky was filled with a strange haze that threw mysterious shadows on the ground below A small pool of water lay lust below a small cave The sun hitting the water made it look like a large diamond placed on a piece of brown paper Inside the cave something stirred scratched itself and crawled out into the sunlight It glanced at the sun then turned and disappeared into the darkness and safety of its home A small lizard crawled out on a rock to sun himself A small distant sound came to its ears lt glanced about but could see nothing except a large yellow bird that was making strange noises A small plane circled twice then landed A man climbed out of lt, threw open the motor cover, looked at the engine, then swore aloud He'd been a fool to try and take a short cut over the desert. Oh, well, he said, they'll have planes hunting for me when I don't arrive at the airport He reached inside the plane and pulled a small golden flask of water from the seat He ran his fingers over the engraved letters, J. C. He sat down beneath the wing of the plane to take advantage of the meager shade, but even there the heat was terrific He opened the flask and placed it to his lips. The water was cold and moist in his throat as It went down. Leaving the flask open, he balanced it on his knee and began removing his racket The lizard watched as the man made a fran tic grab for the golden oblect which had been on his knee He watched as the man picked it from the hot sand turned it upside down and then hurled it with all of his might at the ground The man looked down at the lacket in his hand shrugged and threw it inside the plane The lizard closed his eyes and slept The man looked at the sun and swore He could not stand the heat much longer not without water A wind had begun to blow gently at first but now it was becoming stronger Sand which was being blown by the wind was slowly form mg around the mans shoes He glanced at his watch looked skyward and muttered a small prayer He had been sitting there for ten minutes be fore he saw the lizard lying on the rock. As he watched, the lizard opened his eyes. He looked away but even then he could feel the cold pierc ing stare of its small beady eyes. The heat was unbearable, the sand had completely covered his shoes, his pants and shirt were caked with sand, but he paid no attention to any of these things He was looking at a shadow which was circling the plane. For one split second he thought it was the shadow of a plane, but then it dawn ed on him that it was the shadow of a vulture. The lizard also saw the vulture. within his tiny brain he connected it with death.
