Red and White still dominates Some of the traditions at SHS have been relatively late developing. The first homecoming, for example, was not until 1957. There has never been any doubt, however, about the SHS colors. On Oct. 28, 1906, just a few weeks after SHS began its very first year, the students chose crimson as the school color. In just a few short years, almost all references to the school's athletic endeavors included the phrase Red and White. In fact, until 1932 the Bulldogs often were referred to as the Red and White Warriors. This year at SHS these colors continued to dominate most ac- tivities from pep assemblies to homecoming week to sports events. On Red and White Day, well over half the students showed their pride by displaying their school colors. With the junior, sophomore and freshman classes showing great amounts of spirit, the years to come look very promising for future Red and White Warriors. Seniors show their pride. Varsity cheerleaders stand tall at a pep assembly. page 2 Homecoming king candidate |ohn Abromeit and escorts Chris Healy and Toby Feuling give differing reactions to homecoming festivities. Laid back guys? Not at SHS Sometimes the guys are accused of being too laid back and not participating, but that is certainly not true of all of them, as shown here. For example, there was a terrific amount of par- ticipation by many boys in connection with the homecoming activities. They got into the swing of things on dress up days and powderpuff football, and most carried on that enthusiasm throughout the school year. It was a great fall for the guy's sports, but it certainly wasn't just the athletes who made it a fun year for the whole student body. Powderpuff football gives guys a chance to display a side of themselves not often seen, as shown by senior “cheerleader Dave Swanson. Senior Mason Long shows off his legs during ac- counting class on Pajama Day. 4 page Adrian Rambo Verwolf came ready and loaded for the Vikings. Seniors Jeremy James, Jason Shankweiler and Al Wohllaib display an example of what they wish was in their lockers. Senior Tom Davis, above, donates his artistic talents to the worthy cause of section decorating. Scott Brixen shows how enthusiastically the freshmen became part of SHS this year. On Rambo Day he was close to the real thing. Aside from having to put up with a little of the customary razzing, the freshmen joined in the school activities with gusto and were a great addition to the SHS family. n page 5 JOHN D. ABROMEIT JR. Much of what kids remember about living in Sand point happened to them during the summer months. This year's seniors, for exam pie, will recall the tie dye fad, watching warm sunsets from a cool beach, barbecues and sharing special moments. Class rivilary threatens unity Competition among classes has always existed at SHS, and probably at most other high schools. It's a big part of school spirit. It gives the students an opportunity to show a sense of pride in their class. This year, however, the competition among the classes, most notably the seniors and freshmen, threatened to cause a rift in school unity as a whole. One event that may have triggered that rivalry was the initiation of a frosh boy by a group of seniors one day during the beginning of the school year. This was followed by a number of letters to the editor in the Cedar Post newspaper in which students of one class criticized the others. Principal Jim Wilund stepped in and put an end to the harassments, initiations, etc. In a strongly worded letter to editor, he discouraged any class disputes. This virtually put an end to the rivalry between the classes. Senior Class officers Tom Rust, president; John Abromeit, vice- president; and Toby F e u I i n g , secretary-treasurer. Homecoming week was a series of repeated victories for the juniors. The girls of the Class of '89 won the annual powder puff football game again. Because Homecoming was on Halloween, doors were decorated with ghosts and ghouls; the juniors in Mr. George Marker's history class came in first place with the unforgetable tin foil tree, ghosts, and the dead Viking in its grave. Section decorating prizes also went to the Junior Class. Through all this, the juniors raised over $500 for their treasury. Other fundraisers which were successful included the yearly raffle and the Christmas dance, which was SHS will not soon forget, since it might have been the last of its kind. The Junior Class officers saluted their peers. President Justin Watkins said, Our sincere gratitude is extended to the students of our class. We hope that this level of spirit continues, and we thank you for your never-failing support. Keep it up, Class of '89. SHS had not had a Freshman Class in the same building for over 30 years. Class officers were president Chris Nelson, vice president Krista Elliot, and secretary- treasurer Kerrie Carlson. The class started off big on the fun- draisers, making over $100 on the sale of spook insurance” to Sandpoint businessmen in Oc- tober. They also pocketed $50 at the Homecoming pep assembly for having the best class organization. The freshmen added much to SHS in the way of school spirit, pride, and fresh ideas. They also continued to work together to form a unity which added to the positive attitude at the school this year. Josh VVilund shows how to take t harge. It was almost 'back to normal' The 1987-88 school year represented a “return to normal as we discarded the double-shift nightmare and became Sandpoint High School once again. The year wasn't without change, however, as the ninth graders joined SHS after being separated from the rest of the school for over 30 years. The new kids on the block were many, but all were very qualified and made themselves right at home on our staff. Tom Albertson in math, Gale Hamby in P.E. English (and volleyball, tool). Meile Herman in ninth grade math, Bonnie Herrington in English, Mer- rian Merriman (say that five times real fast) in Spanish, Doug Olin in biology chemistry, Shirley Parker in English, Debbie Price in home economics, and Elisa Cottrell in Spanish all graced our halls for the first time as regular staff members. (Mrs. Parker had substituted here for many years.) Adding the “new ninth grade teachers to this list brought a lot of new faces to Sand- point High School. In addition, Lynne Disteldorf became our com- puter operator and Bill Miller the assistant principal to round out all of the changes. It was a year of cuts for the staff as Terry Iverson, Dwight Smith, and Ron Hunt all had surgery during the year. Mr. Hunt's hip replacement received a great deal of attention from all the staff. Some things didn't change, though. With school and com- munity support, it turned out to be one of the most successful fun- draisers of the school year when the club decided to combine it with a dance. Members competed in areas including math, chemistry, physics, biology, engineering and scientific reasoning, and brought home a bundle of individual and team trophies. They had similar success in competitions held at Coeur d'Alene and Lewiston. President John Abromeit led the way in raising funds for the competition expenses. Their major long range goal is to purchase a new lighting system. A dispute with the mall management over use of the theater was settled by mutual agreement late in the year. Many of the student thespians also went to a drama workshop at Ferris High School in Spokane where they met mime Doug McLeod. Because of a com- bination of events, the group never made an excursion to a sk;i resort this year as a club. Cedar Post gets early start Cedar Post had its ups and downs during the year, according to editor Megan Merriman. One of the ups was the issue of the CP that the staff managed to have available on the first day of school, which is a rare accomplishment, as Megan put it. Megan changed the CP nameplate this year, much to the approval of most readers. Next year's staff plans to keep the new look, according to new editor Carolyn Kemp. The paper hit some financial difficulties at one point and had to suspend publication for a month following Christmas vaca- tion. The main reason was the loss of revenue from the pop vending machines. Last year while double shifting was in effect, there were a lot more people using the vendors, and without that income CP was having some problems. The Letters column was especially popular this year, with several students regularly submitting thought provoking and controversial viewpoints. The student body really got involved with the paper. Megan said the best thing about her staff was their ability to write anything and do it well. Ad- viser Bob Hamilton agreed, especially in the case of Megan herself. Adviser Bob Hamilton put the IBM computer, which was acquired from Taylor Publishing Co. last year, to more extensive use this year with both layouts and copy recorded on discs rather than the tradional forms that have been used in the past. Use of the computer not only saved the staff some time, but it also will earn a discount off the printing costs. Editor Nikki Winn came up with this year's design and formulated the student life, spring activities and color sections of the book. Assistant editor Ruth Whittemoore took charge of the organizations sec- tion, and Sherry Marks edited the classes section. They combined their efforts in each and also worked together in the faculty section of the annual. Kerry Murphy was in full charge of the sports section, creating everything from the layouts to the pictures, copy and headlines. Jessica Susnis was the copy editor. Besides writing some of the copy, she did much of the computer entry work for the index. Teresa Pogue was in charge of the darkrooms and contributed pictures, especially for the student life section. Kim Girtman also took pictures for the book, particularly the sports section. Vicki Webb did the bookkeeping and billing along with her Cedar Post duties of a similar nature, and An- nette Lamb was the business manager. Besides the inclusion of color pic- tures of seniors, which is becoming a tradition after three years, other highlights of this year' annual include the yellow pages advertising section and the index of student, faculty and advertiser names. “The staff is to be congratulated for accomplishing so much with so few people, said Mr. Hamilton. The football team played in the state championship game for the first time, and the volleyball team placed in the state tournament for the umpteenth time. The rest of the year could be characterized in three words — busy, busy, busy. There used to be just three athletic teams at SHS not so many years ago. They were boys football, boys basketball, and boys track. About 1960 golf and wrestling were added, also for boys only, and that's the way things stood until the I970's when interscholastic athletic competition for girls was re-introduced (the very first girls basketball game bet- ween SHS and ano.ther school was played in 1906). Now there are four times as many lettering sports available to athletes in this school as there were 25 years ago. While that may be a terrific advancement for Sandpoint area athletes, it has caused two problems: the need for more facilities (gyms and playing fields) and more money (for uniforms, equipment, travel, supplies, etc., etc.). Scheduling practices, games and meets for all those teams and raising the money to fund them is the job of the athletic director. For the past two years that has been Mr. Duane Ward, who graduated from SHS back in those simpler years but who now has to guide the athletic for- tunes of his alma mater through these more complicated times. He also is the boys basketball coach, which doesn't make his life any easier, especially when he has a good team like he did this year. Is it worth it? You bet! the Bulldog alum exclaimed. Sometimes there aren't enough hours in the day to get to everything and everyone that seem to demand my time, and sometimes it becomes frustrating when there isn't enough money to supply or equip our athletes properly, but there's still no place else I'd rather be. sports 84 sports Bulldogs reach goals The Bulldog football team's goal at the beginning of the season was to make it into the state playoffs. Not only was this an attainable goal, it gave the team more incen- tive to commitment and hard work throughout the season, and it payed off. Sandpoint made it all the way to the championship game for the first time in the history of the state playoffs. After an easy win against Bon- ners Ferry to start the year, the team went on to beat both Wallace and West Valley. Accor- ding to head coach Mike Hagadone, these were two tough teams to beat and it boosted team morale to know that they were on their way to what they had set out to do. Sandpoint's encounter with Coeur d'Alene at the end of the it was, one of the best ex- periences we could ever have had, said Coach Hagadone. They (the Bulldogs) played some really good ball and learned a lot during that game. Qualification for the state playoff came earlier when the Bulldogs knocked off Moscow and Post Falls, the other two A-1 Divi- sion II football teams in North Idaho. They went on to beat Mountain Home 23-7, avenging a loss to that club from last season, and advanced to the champion- ship game. They lost that one 39-7 to Idaho Falls and captured the runnerup trophy. According to Coach Hagadone, Sandpoint football is on the upsw- ing. He feels that this team put in a lot of hours and most of the players made many sacrifices for each regular season didn't end in a I other. And it shows, he said. Their attitude and dedication set the standard for the year. The entire staff enjoyed working with the team, the coach said. Every member seemed to be hard working and committed to the team. In turn, the team's attitude and pride in itself helped school spirit. I'm really proud of the student body for its support. It was great to have people packed into the stands cheer- ing for us. Being part of the high school helped the team because they had more opportunities to see the older players work out. I wish that we could have practiced more with the varsity and junior varsity teams, but they were getting used to a new coach and had that pressure ' said coach Rik Mikkelson. Among those people the young Bulldogs impressed was varsity head coach Gale Hamby. Our jayvee team is a very talented group of young women, she said. Gale Hamby took the position after coaching in Spokane. It was a difficult season for the team because only one of the players had been a starter the previous year. According to Coach Hamby, this has been a learning year for the team. With the senior having had so little varsity playing time, there wasn't as much ex- perience and leadership as previous years. Still, hard work and dedication got the team to the state tourna- ment where the Bulldogs tied for fifth place. Although they didn't take another state title, according to Coach Hamby the growth of the team was more important than a first place finish. Senior Kara Elliot and juniors Darlene Brown and Jodi Parsons were selected for the A-1 North Idaho Sunday newspaper all-star first team, while seniors Shelley Andersen and Raelin Timblin made the second team. 96 sports Varsity coach Gale Hamby watches an intense match, while JV coach Dave Self stares at his clip board. The competition was provided by Bon- ners Ferry and Priest River, but the outcome was in favor of the Bulldogs, who placed four runners in the top five places in the boys division and all of the first five places in the girls division. The team's five returning senior and two junior runners gave plenty of support and encouragement to the new members. Tammie Thurston was the most inspirational person on the squad. She was always encouraging the other runners, said coach Cheryl Klein. The Bulldog boys regularly plac- ed runners in the top five finishers of their races. Boys team captain Brian Griffin placed first in the Post Falls Invitational to become the first Bulldog ever to win an in- terscholastic cross country meet. He also led the pack in the home meet victory. The regional meet in Lewiston was attended by by the Griffin twins and Lish. Brad placed fourth with a time of 17:24. Brian came in seventh and Aaron placed twelfth. The entire girls team also attend- ed regionals, with sophomore Jamie Clizer the top Bulldog finisher in eleventh, missing state competition by one place. The boys continued to in- dividual competiton at the state meet in Pocatello where Brian placed 27th, Brad 30th and Aaron 42nd. We had a larger team than last year and they improved steadily throughout the year. The competi- tion was tough, but they did really well. Next year's team should have more depth and strength. All three scores were 0-0. The SHS girls beat Pullman three times. Returning seniors on the team were Christy Hall. Nikki Glahe, Teresa Pogue, Krystal Walker and Michelle Weldon. Throughout the season, the main goal of the team was to im- prove individual and team skills, said the coach, Mike Keough. The success of this aim was shown in the number of JV players who were moved up to the varsity level during the season. Five JVs — Nicole Disteldorf, Danielle Moore, Raelyn Miller, Duana Williams and Wendy Meyer — saw time on the varsity court during the regular season, and Beth Raynor and Mer- ris Long joined them on the varsity roster for the regional tournament. The girls started the season well, but about half way through they suffered a spell of illnesses that lasted about a month before the entire team was back together. When that finally happened, they finished with several big wins. Learning to play as a team was the major goal set by coach Ray Salinas at the start of the season. I definitely think that we reached this goal by the end of the season, he said. The girls were playing really well and had the confidence to turn to each other on the court. Coach Salinas also had great praise for the team managers, who took care of the many details that are part of a team's needs. I can't say enough about them, the coach said. The varsity team showed their competitiveness this season by becoming co-champions of the Inland Empire League and placing third in the regional tournament. The team had high expectations placed on them at the beginning of the season, according to coach Duane Ward, and he was very pleas- ed with the results of the season. They played a tough schedule this year. Tne team set records in field goal percentage, assists and steals, the coach noted. Many of the players had been on the varsity level before, which went a long way to strengthen the program. With several juniors on the squad, the strength will also be there next year. The team isn't satisfied with just being competitive, they want to win. It's been a positive season and I'm proud of the kids, said coach Ward. According to tbe coach, the season was a team effort all the way. The members worked hard together and had good concentration throughout the season. I'm proud of those who didn't get to play much. The varsity wrestling team had an up and down season, at least partly due to a bus wreck on the way to Lewiston early in the season. At the regional tournament the team had a bad day and several wrestlers made errors that cost them placement in the state meet, head coach Mike McNulty said. The three state tournament wrestlers from SHS were Brian Griffin at 112 lbs., Jerry Banks at 135, and heavyweight David Velacich. Griffin placed fifth in his weight class, and Velacich got sixth. Both are seniors, but Banks is a junior and could very well get another try next season. According to Coach McNulty, as many as five other Bulldog wrestlers could have qualified for state, except that some didn't recover enough from early season injuries to wrestle much. Honors given out at the end of the season included the captain awards, which went to Velacich and Brian Griffin; the MVP, which also went to Brian; the Ralph Walter most inspirational trophy, given to Brad Griffin; and the coaches award, which was receiv- ed by Don Peterson. However, with the four returning lettermen who played on the team this year, the Bulldogs were able to pull off wins against Bonners Ferry, Priest River, West Valley and Moscow, and once even outscored nemesis Coeur d'Alene. One setback occurred when five of the first six players were tem- porarily suspended. However, when the Bulldogs beat Coeur d'Alene for the first time in over ten years at a match at Hidden Lakes, senior Tom Davis was the only regular varsity player on the roster. A hand injury suffered in an AAU basketball tournament cost the team its No. 1 player, Dave Thorn- ton, for awhile, but he recovered later to become the only Bulldog to make the state meet by virtue of his medalist score in the regional. I have mixed emotions about this year due to the fact that the team had so much potential for a fine season,'' said coach Ken Beaudoin. By winning their first three games against St. George, Riverside and Coeur d'Alene, tne Bulldogs were able to gain confidence and a positive at- titude which they kept throughout the season, according to their coach Ed Bock. However, some disciplinary suspensions that occurred mid- season disrupted the team because of the loss of continuity in the flow of the season, the coach said. I also feel, however, that the kids pulled themselves together well. Their at- titudes were good and those who had been suspended kept coming to practice, coach Bock said. Senior Jason Shankweiler catches some air on his snowboard. 137 Junior Matt McNulty rests from his shot put ef- forts during a track practice Different strokes, etc. With split shifting no longer in ex- istance, SHS students fount that they didn't have as much free time as last year once school let out for the day. By carefully planning and choosing the things they liked to do, however, most students were able to fit several activities into their already full school day. Those whose afternoons didn't include working found that it was up to them to choose their entertain- ment, and most felt that the added sleeping hours in the morning were well worth the shortened afternoons. Sophomores Eric Holinka ana John Finney bask in the afternoon sun at a soc- cer game. 138 life life 139 Co-valedictorians top the class Megan Merriman and Darrin Gleiser maintained perfect 4.0 gpa's through their four years of high school and thus earned the title of co-valedictorian of the Class of '88. Megan, editor of the Cedar Post, plans to major in either journalism or physics, probably at Stanford University but she wasn't sure of that when she left here. It's been an in- credibly difficult year, by far the hardest of them all, but it's definitely been worth the work, she said. Darrin's plans include attending Washington State University or Gonzaga and majoring in psychology and minoring in anatomy. He also wants to play baseball in col- lege and eventually become a physical therapist. I feel very honored to be the class co-valedictorian, Darrin said. I've always felt that in our society, a good education plants the seed for a lucrative and fulfilling lire. Co-salutatorians this year are John Abromeit and Vance Bell. Like Megan, John also was ac- cepted to Stanford University and he says that he definitely will go there. Vance was accepted by such prestigious schools as Williams, Wesleyan, Brown and Chicago, but he was undecided where he would be going when school ended. It has been a very good experience for me and I've en- joyed it a lot. The American way of school systems is very different from the Danish way, but you can't really compare them. They are very different, and the results are probably not so different after all. Now I am going back to Denmark with a lot of ex- periences about an American society that I really liked. It's an important thing to be open to other cultures and opinions than your own, and this year has really taught me a lot. I can strongly recommend anyone to take a year in another country where they have to deal with language barriers and cultural differences. My life will go on, but I'll always remember that special year I spent in the United States, and I hope I'll get the c hance of meeting everybody I got to know while being here. Thanks for a great time, and come and visit me if you can. Lennart Hansen, Denmark It has been great here and the time has flown. When I came here in August, I was really nervous. It started with almost missing the plane in New York and Minneapolis, and for that reason my area rep (exchange program representative) and host family didn't show up, but it took only a half hour before my area rep came and pick- ed me up at the airport. Just a few days later it was time to go to school. My host mother and I went to the office for the schedule. Everyone looked at us, and all the other kids seemed to know each other. I wondered how I should manage this. I thought I was going to be an outsider, but no, I went in- to cross country running and realized how easy it is to make friends here. My English was not the best then, but it has improved a lot. I think the school spirit here is better than in Sweden, and the school work is easier, too (except for the language barrier). Sweden doesn't have school sports, clubs or pep assimblies. I think they make the school work easier. If you want to be in any clubs or sports in Sweden, you have to do it after school. Classes here are 10 minutes longer than in my school. In Sweden I had around eight classes a day. If you make a summary on all these facts, I think that this year in the U.S.A. has been my best school year so far. I want to say thanks to my mother, host family, friends and my exchange program for helping me through this school year here in the U.S.A. Jean-Paul Losing, Sweden 142 life Not pictured is Emmanuel Akoun, exchange student from France. The first thing I want to say is thank you to my host family because it was great to spend the year with them. Shari and Chad McCormick were like a real sister and brother for me, and Don and Edith were like real folks. When I first came to Sandpoint, it was tough. I didn't really know how to speak English and I didn't know anybody, but very soon I met a lot of people and made a lot of friends. Shari helped me a lot in that aspect. Chad even tried to teach me how to play football and baseball, but it didn't quite work out. The American way of living is very different than the Spanish way, but it didn't take me a lot of time to get used to it. For one thing, the food is really different. We don't eat hamburgers and hot dogs, and the drinking age is different in my country. There is no set drinking age, and the driving age is 18. The school system in America is great because you get enough time to practice any sport or to get a job. It was the first time I had the chance to practice any sport in high school without going to private clubs. In fall I ran cross country, in winter I played basketball, and in spring I ran track. I think Sandpoint is a good little town for living and I am going to really miss all my friends in high school. I think I've got really good friends, and they will be hard to forget. Thanks to everyone for a great year. _________________Santi Lopez Cuadrado_________________ Want to keep in touch? With the addition of the freshmen to this year's student body, another social function was added to the SHS agenda. The ninth grade's traditional Royalty Dance was a big success here in the spring, undoubtedly assuring the continuation of the tradition. The 75 couples enjoyed the taped music production provided by Junior Class president Justin Watkins as well as the colorful decorations. One observer noted that there were almost as many chaperones as students. The reigning royal couple were Charity Russell and Scott Brixen. Kira Susnis made a grand entrance through the tradi- tional archway at the beginning of her class's annual dance. The royal court included Scott Brixen and Charity Russell, both on the left, as king and queen, with Freshman Class president Chris Nelson and Holly Walker as prince and princess. 148 spring Natural Helpers assist their peers The Natural Helpers group is a new program based on an idea that started in Washington state a few years ago which prepares some students to assist their classmates who feel the need to talk to someone. The original 12 Natural Helpers were identified by members of the student body as peers that teens might like to turn to for help. They began their training during a weekend session and then attended 10 regular meetings as well. They learned listening skills and refer- ral skills and were advised by four adults called “Big Kids. We had a small group to start with, but it worked out very well and we plan to expand the training and therefore expand the program in the future, said SHS counselor Bev Chapin, who was instrumental in get- ting the idea going. She said that she is confident the program will be going strong for years to come. The basic idea behind Natural Helpers is that sometimes a teenager is troubled about something that he or she doesn't want to talk about to an adult but might discuss with another kid, and that there are certain teens that are sought out by others for such talks. It is these students who are trained in how to listen to their peers and also how to refer them to the kind of specialist who might be able to provide necessary profes- sional help. Midnight in Paradise, turned out to be a huge success, with a large majority of the Senior Class attending. The band Legend provided the live music for the dance, and the colors blue, black, purple and silver accented the Roman theme Royalty candidates were E.D. Nelson, Lori Belwood, Shari McCor- mick, Nissa Clark and Kara Elliot for queen; and Tom Rust, Tom Davis, Len Plaster, Scott Anderson and Tom Keck for king. Some of the fellas found that even when you pay for the rent of a tuxedo, sometimes the coat has to come off when the temperature rises. Thanks to Rosauer s talented bakers, the dancers were able to take a delicious cake break once they got over the idea that the dessert was too beautiful to demolish. Senior Krystal Walker looks pensive and her gown looks beautiful. So did everone else's. 1 Seniors Kip Rex and Brian Hicks and junior Timberly Colvin found time between dances to stand around and chat, possibly about how great everbody looks. 150 spring Kris Wyatt and Butch Belwood take a snack break on the steps. Whether they anticipate it, dread it, or a little of both, it is always there at the back of their minds. It is the end and the beginning. It is the culmination of 12 years of early mor- nings and late nights. It is the gradua- tion ceremony.______________________ This year the Class of '88 left the halls of Sandpoint High with each in- dividual member realizing that it was the end of just another chapter in their lives. And yet, with all the talent and promise that exists in the graduates of '88, the next chapter looks to be very successful. I finally made it!” Denise Mclntire gives a big grin after receiving her diploma. A group of students watch the ceremony from the stands and anticipate their own graduation. Co salutatorian Vance Bell gives a few words ofadvice and farewell to his fellow classmates. The graduates and full house audience listened intently as Jill Castle sang Friends by Michael W. Smith. spring 157 Eric Holland flashes his perma-grin smile and shows off his luckiest outfit. 88's love their party Once again the graduation party put on by the parents of the seniors was a huge success. Limbo contests, a dance-off, lip sine contests, black- jack, poker, bean toss and dart throw all were part of the impressive lineup of activities available to the new grads. Of course, if one didn't feel like doing any of these, there was always the food. Food, food and more food line the tables in the Elks Club, including a continuous stream of fresh pizza. Later there were two huge submarine sandwiches. The party lasted until 4 a.m. when the last of the seniors headed for home, tired and full and very happy. C'mon, Lennart, you can bet more than that! Chris Rawlins, Brian Dryden and Niss Clark urge Lennart Hansen to go for broke. Gee, this pizza is great! Jim Bonar seems to be saying to Cherie Olson. B-5? No, I don't have that one, Kara Elliot • thinks as she plays bingo and dines on gourmet pizza at the same time. 158 spring AI Wohllaib tries his hand at the Speed Tumbler game, still wearing his graduation cap, tassleand all. Classmates urge her on as Nixie Clark rolls the dice at the crap table. Students played for simulated money and could spend their winnings at a country store. spring 159 A note from the editor My job as this year's Monticola editor hasn't exactly been what you'd call easy. The addition of freshmen and the loss of two important staff members earlier in the year made it even more crucial that each staffer put in a full 100% effort. That's why my staff members are the first one's I'd like to thank. Sherry, Ruth, and Kerry, I know how hard it was for so few people to do so much but you guys did it all you should definitely be proud of your accomplisments. Teresa, thanks for getting up all those early mornings when it was probably the last thing you wanted to do. Your sense of humor kept me laughing, no matter how discouraged I was. Only now that the book is finally done, can I look back and realize my biggest source of support — my parents. Mom and Dad, thank you both for all the love and support I've gotten from you. You always managed to make things seem not quite so bad and I'll always appreciate the encouragement. There's so much that goes into a yearbook. The time, patience, energy, perseverance, and money that go into putting a year- book together are unbelievable. That's why I feel that Mr. Bob Hamilton deserves a great deal of recognition. The literally countless hours that he spent on the computer and on editing were always done willingly and patiently. Thank you most of all, Mr. Hamilton, for never giving up on me, despite how much you sometimes wanted to. I know I'm not exactly the most organized editor you've ever worked with, but you were always there to straighten out all my disasters. Lastly, I'd just like to say a quick thanks to the student body. It was definitely a hectic year, but with all the cooperation from the student body, it made it a lot easier. If I had it to do all over again, there are naturally those things that I would have done differently. Despite the mistakes, the many setbacks, the missed deadlines, and the shortened tempers, however, I would not trade the experience I've gained for anything. Thanks again to all those individuals who took part in this book. Sincerely, Nikki Winn Editor Colophon Monticola 1988 176 pages 160 !
