Team Monticola 1984-85: Year of change, year of stability. SHS opened in fall under new administration, new graduation requirements, a new attendance policy, even a newly paved parking lot (eventually). But through all the change there remained a constant thread, a stability provided by the class of ’85 itself. Concluding its 12 years of public education in the community, they continued to demonstrate a spirit and enthusiasm that had been growing over the years. The Seniors began by providing that solid positive leadership for the rest of the student body, which they continued to demonstrate through the year. Football Festival Homecoming stood out this year from other years for two reasons. First of all, this was the First year that the sophomores and juniors have been included in the royalty. Along with Queen Natalie Linscott and King Lee Badger, were Princess Jance Klesch, Prince Scott Albert- son, Lady Heather Daarstad, and Lord Mike Crossingham. The second reason was spirit. There was more class spirit and enthusi- asm this week than there has been for several years. , said Mr. Beaudoin. The paper, published weekly, con- tained articles of interest to students and schedules of upcoming events. It also printed letters written by students on their opinions on specific issues. This year several members of the staff attended and competed in the national Journalism conference. It was held in Seat- tle, Washington. Being part of such a tradition of SHS is a great honor and our whole staff put a lot of themselves into putting out a paper of high quality, commented Editor Rooney Gerke. 14 This page clockwise; Steve Brower eyes subject before shooting; Rachel Van Horne pleased after reviewing; Kraige Clark busy at work. Math Club, in its third year, has more than doubled in size. The main objective of the club is to have fun with math” said club advisor Mr. Rick Gehring. The club attends two main com- petitions, one in Coeur d'Alene in the fall and one in Boise in the spring. The highest scorer at each competition wins a scholarship to N.I.C. and Boise State respectively. The runnerup also receives a prize, such as a calculator. The club only raises money for their trip to Boise. Mr. Gehring would like to start an intrascholastic competition at S.H.S. and award a medal to the highest scorer. The club was informal and did not elect any officers. Fantasy: Front row: A. Peiney; L. Turner; N. Findlay; T. Isley; Back Row: K. Matilla; A. Harbison; H. Blair; D. Carrothers; D. Aden; S. Marching Band went to Canada to march, along with a competition or two. Festival Choir and Concert Choir also did well, and as part of the year’s activities went to N.I.C. for a competition and sang for a downtown bank. Clockwise from upper left: D. Carrothers takes a break, Marching Band in Canada, Majorette Julie Anderson leads the pack. 21 This year’s membership in Mime and Masque was a larger turnout than in the past several years and helped to make the group more agile. Students don’t have to be exceptionally gifted in acting, they just need to attend meetings and help in any way possible. Because of the lack of organization, there was no play in the fall; however, the group plans to put one on sometime in the spring. Along with the production Mime and Masque hopes to have the Variety Show as well. When asked what the purpose of the club was Advisor Nancy Miller comment- ed, Although Mime and Masque is far from the lights of Broadway it's a chance for students to perform and learn a little about the theater.” 22 On opposite page; 1. This year the Ponderettes have a new advisor, more spirit and almost all new members. With 26 girls the group is performing very well and most of the members feel that its the best team that SHS has seen yet. 26 Kim Prais, Captain, started off the drill teams successful year by win- ning the showmanship award at a meet with teams across the North- west. Because of a linger- ing debt, the staff chose to have Herff Jones print the book. This meant learn- ing new ways of operating, further complicating matters for the already young and inexperienced staff. How- ever, despite the hectic, confusing, and sometimes frustrating deadlines, things became smoother as the year progressed. With the help of their new advisor, Mr. Bob Hamilton, the staff learned many important things that should make the operation run much smoother next year. 1. Group Picture; Front row: J. In January the members trav- eled to 49°North where they experienced night skiing for the first time. In February, the members went to Whitefish, Montana and spent three exhausting days at Big Mountain. Their final trip took them out of the country, as the club headed to Red Mountain of Canada. All the members expressed a stronger feeling of friendship towards each other. All were extremely pleased that they shared these experiences with one another. This was the overall feeling within this years group. The only requirements needed to be- long are a 3-2 G.P.A, and to reguarly at- tend the meetings. The club consists of seniors, juniors, and sophomores. Sopho- mores are allowed in after the first semes- ter. This year the activities included the car- nival, helping with the Bonner Co. Food Bank's Christmas dinner, and attending a seminar at WSU. On this page: 1. Leohono members: from left to right, front row: S. Vincent, K. Young, L. Smith. Second row: J. Miller, T. Johnson, B. When asked about this group of artists advisor Mr. Anderson stated that al- though there were fewer members there was more enthusiasm. On this page: 4 Art Club members: from to left to right; M. This year the Homecoming Dance was extremely successful, as was the sports award ban- quet. The club was able to purchase Pep Club sweatshirts. They hope that by wearing them to games and school functions that school spirit will continue to flow through the halls of SHS. On this page; 4. President Greg Parker feels that this year's members were much more willing to get involved in the group’s activities and did a superb all around job. This was evident early in the year during Homecoming week. Activities during the week were much more interesting than in past years as the high level of participation indicated. The week culminated in the Homecoming pep assembly which was as good of one as I’ve seen,” commented club advisor Mr. Terry Iverson. 56 1. Group Pictures: Front Row: C. Anderson;J. Fisher; R. The agressive gridders certainly rank among the hardest hitting tacklers in all of SHS history. Among the senior leaders of the team were Mike Savage, winner of the Hunt trophy as most inspirational player; Jason Porter, named the winner of the Kramer trophy for outstanding lineman; Rob Farmin, Verwolf trophy winner as outstanding back; and Greg Parker, winner of the academic award as the senior player with the highest G.P.A. The state championship banner is the third in a row for Sandpoint and Coach Matlock and also the fourth for the Bulldogs in the past five years. During the championship match against Nampa, fans filled the S.H.S. gym to overflowing and created a noise level previously unknown at a volleyball match in all of Idaho. A team consisting of 10 seniors and 1 junior fought extremely hard. However, they often came up on the short end of the score, losing some games by one or two points. The Bulldogs' main objective this year was to do the best they could and eventually make it to state. Despite early season setbacks, the boys earned their way into the Inland Empire League play-offs where they defeated Lewiston easily in two games. Senior Mike Savage set several new assist records this year. These included most assists in one game with 11, total assists per season, 94, and highest average assist with a 4.9.average. Many excellent matches could be observed at S.H.S. during the season. The team as a whole had a fine showing and as many as eight wrestlers were expected to make it to the state tournament in Boise. However, only four did make it to state. Juniors Rob Slov (101) and Randy Miller (141) and sophomores Dave Sanborn (115) and Mike Crossingham (170) were the ly grapplers to earn berths in state. Unfortunately, none of the four placed. Ray Miller, head coach for 9 years resigned his position effective at the end of this season. Rust Although the season fell short of its expectations, Coach Bob Hamilton felt there was much to be ahppy about. The girls worked very hard, never quit, and right up to the last ballgame still had faith in themselves. It was particularly enjoyable to watch the younger players improving constantly. It shows that the girls basketball program remains strong. I'll always have a special place in my memories for this particular team because of the difficulties we shared together. I will always admire them for their ability to bounce back and tackle the next challenge with a positive and enthusiastic attitude,” said Hamilton. The first meet was March 16 in the University of Idaho’s Kibbie Dome. Boys track Coach Lee said the turnout was about average. Returning lcttermen included seniors Rob Farmin, Tim Klinger, John Rust, and Jeff Tremoreaux; juniors Scott Albertson, Craig Carrick, Randy Miller, Todd Miller, Rex Owens; and sophomore Rich Christman. Returning veterans for the girls are juniors Liz Foster and Andrea Jackson and sophomores Jami Blake, Erin Irgins, and Laura Thurston. The team this year should be pretty good said Coach Lee. Besides their league opponents, Lewiston and Coeur d'Alene, the golfers had matches with Kellogg, Wallace, Bonners Ferry, Priest River, Chewelah, and Spokane. Beaudoin expressed his pleasure with the continued growth of the girl's team. The girls were expected to have a full schedule this spring. Team: front row: J. Bunker; K. KeOughJ. Robideaux; K. Soccer The second season of Bulldog soccer got underway this spring March 8. Because of a foot and a half of snow on the ground, the squad began practicing later than they expected and when they did begin it was at the Fairgrounds. A record number of interested students turned out for the team. Since only 18-20 people could be on a team at one time an A-team and a B-team were formed. Since soccer is not a recognized High School sport in Idaho, the soccer team had a tough time Finding games with Idaho teams other than Coeur d’Alene. As a result of this lack of Idaho opposition, the Dogs more than once found themselves on a bus bound for Spokane, Cheney, and other Washington schools. With a fair record from last year, Coach Jon Pond and the Bulldogs set out this year to improve upon that record. Cheerleaders 1. J.V. Cheerleaders intensely watch the pep assembly. 2. We longed for the day when we would rule the school, when nothing was ahead of us but the outside world. Beginning the year we feel exuberant; Now we are tops; no one to push us around, tell us what to do, or look up to; we are on top of the world. Then it comes, the realization. We are no different, just older and maybe a little wiser. More mature? Perhaps. We think back to the times when as freshmen we thought of seniors as the epitome of cool. They had it all together. Do we? We remember how dominat- ing they seemed and we compare ourselves to that image. We become a little frightened, maybe a little sad, as though we had lost a dream. But then we realize that they were no different either. We now look with that same awe and respect toward those older than us who have already made their way in the world. It is now our time. We feel a little excited and anxious, yet scared and nervous and even a little sad about leaving the security of high school. We remember the good times and the bad. And we look forward to all that life has to offer. We hope for a bright future, and we share a common past. We will miss the security of these halls, and the familiar faces, but we will enjoy the many new things we encounter. We will go on and the chain will continue. The new seniors will take over and we’ll say goodbye. We leave the things that were left to us. The things that all sophomores and juniors look forward to, for it is all a part of growing up. 184 185 To the Class of 1986, The Power of Leadership! Being a Senior Means . . . —Calling Teachers by their first names. —Always being first in the lunchline. —Being able to have as many tardies as you want. —Always winning yelling competitions at pep assemblies. —Not having to say you’re sorry when you bump into someone in the hall. —Dressing like a slob and not feeling inferior. —Being in the hall between classes without a note. —Filling applications and Financial Aid Forms! —Using But Mom, I'm a Senior as an excuse for everything. —Having to do government issues. —Making sophomores take the blame for everything. —Having to pass ALL of your classes. —Not remembering when YOU were an immature sophomore. —Having all the teachers remember your name. —Being able to act immature and not feel like a sophomore. —Acting like a sophomore and calling it Senioritis. 186 187 —Kiss and the Bee Gee's were hot. —you threw your retainer away at Dub's and you had to dig through three garbage cans to find it. —your parents left for the weekend and you spent two days cleaning up after the party. —you were in Drivers Ed and the instructor made you drive through the city beach. —you walked into Algebra class and you forgot there was a test that day. —you were a sophmore and you walked into the gym for the 1st time and felt 100 Senior eyes glaring at you. —sophmores were initiated during Homecoming week. —you saw rude comments about you on the bathroom wall. —your first boy-girl party where you played spin the bottle. —your first kiss. —you were the only person in your gym class who couldn't finish the mile. —you walked into the wrong classroom. —you wore flair-legged jeans. —your first date. —being booed while you were a Freshman at pep assemblies. —your first cruize in your parents car. —you told the class a joke and nobody laughed. —your first traffic ticket. —the first time a Senior said Hi”. REMEMBER WHEN 190 191 194 1984 - 85: “It was the best !” Another year at SHS has been so quickly by, For some it was the last, and others their first day. Let’s stop to take a look into the past, To recollect the memories where is our minds they’ll always last. Seeking out every dollar when school shopping time came, If you weren’t wearing the latest styles, it was teh sales clerk you’d blame. Anticipation was built for that first fall day, Until they opened the SHS doors and said, For the school year, you're here stay” A new administration gave us a good start, All the things they did, they did with heart. In Homecoming week, as our spirits grew, We showed our pride through and through. Each day was filled with fun and games, It was the best,” the students claimed! Walking through crowded hallways was always a chore, But making it to class on time a little more. Asbestos vacation was a welcome break, It was good for us, that they made that mistake. The student’s section of the bleachers held the lunchtime jamboree, Up there with your cafeteria lunch, or sack of food, was the place to be. As snow season aprroached, a Winter Wonderland, We wanted to play; teachers didn’t understand. Many times we’d wonder if we’d make it out alive, For that long awaited goal, we’d always strive. The year was a success as many will tell, But we all get sick at the sound of a bell. Sticking together through thick and thin, With our spirits combined, we’d always win This school has enriched us, and helped us to grow, With support from teachers and parents, and the love that they show We’ll never forget the fun that we shared, The days filled with sunshine, and the friends that cared Thank'you for making us who we are, and what we’ll be, Oh Alma Mater Sandpoint High, we pledge our loyalty.
