“
Once long ago My ancestry opened the door And I stepped into life 2 Since then I’ve aged and opened countless doors of my own, Finding wisdom in the old and a bit of the old within myself At first I was hesitant I didn’t think I could make it In the vast world that awaited me 7 But then I remembered The knowledge of the past And of the past before me And somehow I felt compelled to go on I find that all I came in contact with ... That which was close to me And that which gave me joy ... 10 11 In that memory I hold the Knowledge That leads me onward Vice Principal Tom Keough Superintendent Dr. Likens 20 Principal Richard Sodorff 21 Mathematics Eva Whitehead Phil DeBoard Richard Gehring The Arts LeRoy Anderson Marian Ruyle Steve Cobourn Dona Meehan 22 Sciences Don Albertson Tom Dryden Jim Bauer Language Arts Standing: Marian Whitfield Bob Hamilton Betsy Walker Barbara Sterling Joy O'Donnell Marianne Love Seated: Glenn Ford Florine Dooley Bonnie Spitzer 23 Vocational Education Dale Heimgartner Phil Osloond Pam Eimers Jackie Bentz Seated: Dana Curtis Social Studies Ron Hunt George Marker Dorothy Ellenbecker Glen Rolofson Terry Iverson Ray Miller 24 Business Ray Holt Imogene Davis Al Jacobson Diane Tatterson Physical Education Cotton Barlow Pat Smith Ken Beaudoin Bill Adams 25 Counselors Dwight Smith Bev Chapin Office Personnel Ruth Straley Sharon Coulter Barbara Palmer Janice Klinger 26 Custodians Chip Roos Dewey Johnston Will Reineke Kitchen Edna Moe Lea Erben Lori Mclnelly 27 28 Faculty focus 29 X 30 “Class of 77” Led by class officers Sulet Smith, Doug Thurlow and Deanna Rench and with the help of advisers Beverly Chapin, Dwight Smith, Joy O'Donnell and Terry Iverson, the Class of 77 experienced a productive year. Moreover, juniors experienced something new this year when they were given the Strong Campbell Interest Test, which determined the career area that the students were interested in. In fact, Sandpoint became undisputed Panhandle League Champions with a 3-0 Panhandle Record. Also, through their concerted efforts, the Bulldogs concluded in a three-way tie, along with Coeur d'Alene and Lewiston, for top honors in the Inland Empire League. According to many avid fans, prospects for the future look good as there will be many returners with varsity experience combined with players from the J.V. squad, who compiled a 5-3 record. The team highlighted their season in the second game while playing host to Bonners Ferry. This contest not only paid for game expenses but also netted a profit on the whole according to Coach Pat Smith. Even though the team consisted of only two returning lettermen, Pam Bradetich and Barb McHenry, the girls pulled through with a 4-6 win-loss record. The Bulldogs made an uphill climb all the way as they lost their first three games before breaking into the win column. After their initial victory the team followed a pattern of win one- lose one; this continued until about mid-season when they started to win over fifty percent to finish the regular season with an 11-9 win-loss record. Then came time for the district series against Coeur d' Alene. The Bulldogs defeated the Vikings in two games to advance to Regionals against Moscow. After winning the first game in the Bear's Den, it looked as if Sandpoint had them with ease but Moscow came to Sandpoint determined to win. The Bears led much of the game until Kevin Downard put one up with twenty seconds remaining to tie it at 42-42, a score which remained at the buzzer. Thus, the game went into overtime. Sandpoint outscored Moscow 6-2 in the final three minute period to win the Regional title as well as the first state tournament berth since 1970. The Varsity wasn't the only Boys Basketball team to excel, however. Coach Bill Adams' J.V.'s went 16-4 this year. According to Mr. Bob Hamilton, This has been the most exciting year in the recent history of Sandpoint basketball. Varsity, Kneeling: P. Wilson. Standing: Coach Jacobson, R. Baker, R. Stevens, D. Phil Osloond, SHS shop instructor, was a coach for the first time and led the JV's into an undefeated season of 15-0. Also, for the first time, the girls' varsity team played in the same type of tournament situation as the boys. With CDA being the only other A-l school in their league, the girls met CDA in two out of three games to determine which one would go to regionals. Determined but unsuccessful, Coach Hamilton's cage queens were defeated by CDA. Remarked teammate Donell Dehlbom, We had the ability to go to state, but our free throws weren't going in, while everyone elses were. Another change involved being associated with the Intermountain League rather than the Panhandle League. Following what seemed to be an invincible record, the girls eventually placed third with a win-loss record of 13-6. Varsity squad, front row: S. Smith, P. Bradetich, B. Marieneau. With seventeen returning lettergirls, the girls7 track team's strong points were expected to be shot put, high jump, relays, sprints and middle distances, according to Mrs. Smith. The team and their coaches, Dwight and Pat Smith, started the season March 14 and worked their way toward the District meet in Moscow May 13 and State, May 20 and 21 at Boise. The top golfers competed in the league matches which were held once a week and the subsequent league leaders attended the state tournament. Mr. Beaudoin also reported that Sandpoint and Coeur d' Alene competed in the A-l League, while Kellogg dropped to the A-2 division. With only one league match, and one dual held weekly, Mr. Beaudoin stated that he definitly would like to see more dual matches in the following years to enable the entire team to participate more often. The manager's job consists of taking care of the details, thus leaving the coaches with more time to devote to their teams. Such details include taking care of uniforms and equipment, recording stats at the games, and a multitude of other jobs. Although managers don't participate in the games themselves, they are a great asset to their team, said Hamilton. This years' managers are A. Gooby, Z. Palmer, and D. Brisboy for girls' basketball; S. Bergman, P. Wilson, S. Packwood for boys' basketball; W. Evans, C. Cahill for football; L. Smith, D. Darnell for girls' volleyball; and T. Love and D. Powers for wrestling. 104 105 Arttmttea Art Club Providing murals for downtown merchants was a major project of Art Club this year. Group members met on Saturdays and painted Christmas scenes on windows of several businesses. The organization also designed special emblems for their club jackets. In July, Doug Thurlow, Sulet Smith and Cindy Wooden attended Brigham Young University for a journalism conference. Thurlow placed first in newswriting and Sulet placed third in feature. The group also attended the annual fall journalism conference held in Sun Valley. They were accompanied by Mr. Bob Hamilton, adviser, and Mr. Tim Pilgrim, director of journalism at North Idaho College. In addition, the staff will travel to San Francisco in April for another conference. Another CEDAR POST project included selling athletic programs to satisfy the increased cost of financing the school paper. Journalism 1: T. Love, S. Allen, D. Girtman, D. Chapman. At this event local merchants donated different items to the chapter and farmers donated farm products. This successful money making project cleared $800.00 for the group, according to Brian Book, president. In addition to the auction, a hayride was held in which twenty oarticipated. Group members also participated in different jntests dealing with meats, the F.F.A. Creed, dairy cattle and products, Co-op, livestock, farm mechanics and public speaking. Their activities for this year included a luncheon for the foreign exchange students to Bonner County, a Thanksgiving party, the sale of candy bars to assist students in going to foreign countries, and inviting the exchange students to spend a day in the French and Spanish classes. According to advisers Mrs. Walker and Ms. Whitfield, these activities brought a smashing success. Much of the planning occurred at this time so that when school began in the fall the staff could begin production of the annual. One particular asset of this year was that all of the photography including development was done by staff members. This gave more people the opportunity to learn photography techniques then in years past. As fall turned into winter and winter to spring, the deadlines were met with: I can't think of anythiny to write for this copy, or What can I use in place of this poor negative? Even with all the problems the book was finally completed. It was one of the most difficult jobs I have ever been faced with, said co-editor Ken Carter. Front Row: K. Carter, co-editor; D. Every Tuesday and Thursday mornings the girls practiced bright and early - 7 A.M. to be exact. This, in turn, promoted more precise, more organized efforts as the girls led cheers at athletic events. To raise money this year, the cheerleaders held a carmel corn sale and a bake sale. They also bought presents for the athletes that they proudly supported. Varisty: D. Rench, C. Farmin, J. According to Ms. Marian Whitfield, Mime Masque adviser, many new members learned the basic theatre knowledge of makeup, how to handle a comedy, and stage preparations. In addition to the play, the dramatic aspirants entered the Declamation contest again this year. Finally, the drama club sponsored their traditional childrens play which was presented to first, second, and third grades. Front Row: T. Hamacher, J. Hill, B. McHenry, C. Tillberg, M. Parson, M. Another money making endeavor was carameled apple sales during lunch hour. Also, important spirit boosters assumed by the Pep Club included sign painting and ticket taking at the basketball games. Acting as secret guardian angles both at Football Festival and Christmas kept the girls busy providing tantalizing treats for their favorite athletes. Thus, the rodeo team only entered one contest, which was the district competition in Kamiah. Despite this setback, Miss Dooley reported that the members did not seem to lose interest in their club. Joining her were Mr. Steve Cobourn, director of guitar, swing choir, large band, and pep band, and Mrs. Donna Meehan, adviser of the concert choir. The musical schedule was dotted with activities throughout the year. Some of these included presenting concerts, accompanying the drill team, participating in the District I Solo and Ensemble Contest and District I Large Group Festival, and marching in numerous parades. To finance these activities, numerous money making projects were launched. These included concerts and a light bulb sale. Department goals for the coming year include the addition of a majorette team, and needed music equipment. 133 Ski Club With an extreme lack of snow until late February, Ski Club members were unable to plan any major trips this year. In fact, skiing at Schweitzer was severely limited until an abundant deposit of snow came in early March. The group did, however, make a one-day trip to Whitewater Ski Resort near Nelson, B.C., according to Phil Osloond, advisor. To earn their funds, the skiers held their annual chili feed in October. In addition, they accepted donations on a season ticket. Furthermore, many weekend days were spent cutting wood to be sold during the winter months. Members: R. Roose, J. Lyons, C. Eaton, L. With approximately thirty-five representatives, an average of ten - twelve usually showed up at the meetings. On the bright side, the annual skating party was held, in November while the big money making project - activity cards got the year underway. The club voted not to continue supporting an orphan, and they instead donated the money to a national organization, Muscular Dystrophy , said Jason Lyons, student government president. Also this year, the Student Council helped promote the Winter Carnival teen dance and sponsored a variety of National Assemblies. Seated: J. Meneely, sec. treas.; J. Lyons, pres.; C. This brought a substantial amount of money into the organization's treasury ' said Bill Mitchell, president. Also initiation of new members was held, in spite of a lack of membership. Hearing of Lori Stone's invitation to President Carter's Inauguration, the club donated twenty five dollars to her for trip expenses. Front Row: Y. Eidson, L. Miller, D. Johnson, W. Mueller, D. To make up for this financial loss, they had other breadwinning activities such as bake sales and cake raffles. This money will go toward the Leohono scholarship which will be awarded to a graduating senior, said Ray Holt, adviser. Other proposed activities to finish off the year were a computer dance, a tour through a television studion in Spokane as well as accompanying and supporting the High School Bowl team during the competition on KHQ T.V. Among the many money making projects held by the club was a special basketball game between the high school's men's faculty and the local police officers. Other activities included bake sales, selling balloons at football games and holding parties on special holidays such as Halloween, Christmas, etc. In addition to raising funds, representatives of the group attended the annual Legislative Breakfast, including special workshops and a state board meeting. Mr. Dryden's fifth period Biology II class, who all call him “Doc , initiated the Biology Club, alias The Society for the Preservation of the Wild Yeast, at the beginning of this school year. And for just starting out, the group had big plans, for spring activities. They anticipated a survival course and several long field trips, including the Seattle venture, throughout the year. Besides being a new club, the science buffs also followed a new form of leadership. Instead of having the usual president and vice-president, the members all were expected to cooperate in leading the club. Front Row: Mr. Dryden, adviser; N. Rasor, K. Wetzel, B. Coon, L. Collie, R. For example, ASB sponsored national assemblies allowed students to many times take an active role. When not watching an assembly, one could also observe Rodeo Club cowboys dodging around the bushes near their north door hangout. Or F.F.A. members could be seen testing their knowledge at their many judging contests. Aspiring actors and actresses could get stage experiences in their dramatic presentations. Pep Club members learned responsibility in their service-oriented activities and members of the Business Club many times became involved in monkey business at their numerous parties. All in all, the group functions offered not only lessons in cooperation but also lots of fun. 144 145 Following a dismal rainy summer, the sun came out when SHS students had to return to their scholastic pursuits. The temptation of taking to the lake for fall swimming made sitting in crowded classrooms even more difficult. Registration time saw a record number of 740 plus students enroll. The year's activities began with the usual sounds of cheering pep assemblies and Friday night football contests. 150 An unusually mild fall kept students outside the building soaking up the sun they missed so much during the summer. The 45-minute noon hour saw brown- baggers dotting the lawns. And the yearly release from fashion pressures came on Hello Day when seniors pretended they were twins, juniors were famous individuals, sophomores bubblegummed through their classes as folks from the fabulous Fifties and teachers mimicked gypsies. Within the school, Boys and Girls Staters Doug Thurlow, Brian Book, Lee Fellows, Ken Carter, Steph Hoyt, Pam Bradetich, Jason Lyons, Jacque Meneely, and Ann Gooby had the opportunity to relate their experiences of attending the two government-oriented sessions. 151 Colorful class signs throughout the school, boasts of pride toward a winning football team and a multitude of favors extended toward gridiron stars exemplified the spirit of another Football Festival. And with that October occasion came the touch of royalty as SHS students cast votes for their favorite queen candidate. When the ballots were totalled, Diana Anderson emerged as the first lady of the Festival. Adding an accent of beauty to her court were princesses Stephanie Hoyt, Karen Holm, Brenda LaGrace and Kathleen Werner. Following a crowd pleasing “stealing of the show by younger assistants in the crowning committee, the Bulldogs ripped their way through the sign and emerged victorious over the Wallace Miners. 153 Turkey month was initiated this year with the election of a Southern Baptist Governor James Earl Carter as thirty-ninth President of the United States. In the close contest Carter dominated the South and the East, while President Gerald Ford took almost all Western states. Meanwhile back at SHS, senior Kevin Jameson distinguished himself by winning the annual Bausch-Lomb award for high achievement in the sciences. Frivolous playing around in the halls was contrasted by true dedication on the part of those interested in the High School Bowl. The usual gourmet's touch at most dinner tables topped off the welcome four- day Thanksgiving vacation. 154 XX The four weeks of school between Thanksgiving and Christmas flew by rapidly with the onset of the basketball season. The games provided both excitement and disappointment for the home fans. In addition, they allowed school groups the opportunity to earn a few extra dollars through donations on cakes. Chemistry class was a scene of goggles and flames as students learned scientific principles through experimentation. The music of Christmas came to SHS gymnasium just prior to vacation when the band, orchestra and choirs entertained in their holiday concert. Although the topography lacked the usual adornment of snow, low temperatures created artistic ice formations on frosty windows. 157 Following the holiday season, students found themselves returning to the rigors of school. For example, when semester time rolled around, cramming for exams was a common scene. In addition, the counselors were plagued with never ending schedule changes. Many sophomores spent their noon hours selling bulldog T-shirts, and Karen Holm was the winner of the 1977 Betty Crocker Award. Outside the confines of the school, a dearth of snow meant limited activity for both downhill and cross country ski enthusiasts, but they took every opportunity available. Highlighting the month was the spirited class yelling competition and zany skits at pep assemblies. 159 During the month of hearts and cupids the R.O.T.C. Sponsor Corps, honored the Sandpoint basketball fans by marching during the halftime at the Sandpoint- Lewiston basketball game. The group included three SHS alumnae, Glory Whittaker, Linda Rogers, and Barbara Greenleaf. In addition to this function, organizational activities included Radio-thon 1977, which netted over $1000 for the Booster Club and the annual F.F.A. luncheon for the teachers as a thank you for the help they gave to F.F.A. In contrast to successful club pursuits, the Rodeo Club dance failed to materialize because of lack of interest and as usual, students passed their leisure hours absorbing magazine material in the library. 161 - - - | hopes of going to state, the Sandpoint Bulldogs A headed into a tournament that will not be V V 1 LI 1 forgotten in the lives of loyal Bulldog fans. The local team faced the Coeur d' Alene Vikings and walked away with the District I trophy in two consecutive victorious games. As many awaited anxiously for the night when Sandpoint would vie for the Regional title against Moscow, cheers went up - On to State and We're No. 1 . These cheers stimulated the Bulldogs on to victory with their first win over the Bears in Moscow's home territory, a feat which had never before been mastered. When the night of the second big game finally came, the Bulldog gym was packed with approximately 1,500 spectators, and suspense was in the air. 163 a « the fans got all the excitement they came ZX Kl H to observe as Jacobson's Bulldog five downed the Bears in a three minute overtime. On to State was no longer a dream. Victorious cheers rang through the gym; Coach Jacobson was hoisted on the shoulders of his ball club; and the traditional victory net cutting was a stirring sight for the emotion packed mob of onlookers. The cheer We're No. 1 had become reality in the hearts of the team, the students and the town. 164 As the sun sets and the moon Emerges, Thus closing another day I look back ... and review My thoughts. 0T I wonder in awe at the Beauty opened before me. And I find myself lost in Thought. 169 170 As I grow, My wisdom expands. I come to know Hate and fear, Sadness and disappointment, Anguish and distress. 173 And yet my mind Rejoices For the gift of Emotions. My ideals are many My goals set high As I go on, I ponder The many routes before me, Wondering which to take. I must, however, take Each day Step by step - so not to Fall back or stumble forward ... Helping others to open the doors To their futures, giving them Memories to be forever Cherished 175 Nevertheless, Wherever I go; whatever I do The memories of life itself will Lead me onward To my destiny. 176 : '■ '■ •■. r V-.
