He is inter- ested in the outdoors way of life and can be found there most any time. An avid fence builder and T.V. watcher, Mr. Tom Keough enjoys sports of any kind. Born in Pomona, California, he lived in southern California and Priest River, Idaho before coming to our school. 12 Student Body Officens the Sciences 'Is the heart rate of a Daphnia affected by temperature? The man with the answer is Mr. Don Albertson, biology instructor and assistant football coach. A Sandpoint na- tive and an outdoorsman, Mr. Albertson spends his free time hunting, fishing, and raising cattle. Dryden's my name, biology's my game. So goes the introduction to Mr. Dr3fden, SHS biology teacher. Be- sides being a biology buff and a native of Jerome, Idaho, Mr. Dryden finds pleasure in constructing model air- planes . Above: Always ready and willing to impart her wise counsel is girls' counselor Mrs. Claire Sodorff. A na- tive of Spokane, Washington Mrs. Sodorff enjoys spending her leisure time reading or when weather permits swim- ming. Left: Things have really begun exploding since the ar- rival of mad scientist, Mr. Bill Straley. A native of Wyoming and our beloved chemistry teacher, Mr. Straley is a dedicated ski freak and is presently in the process of constructing a house single-handedly. ip o ; 14 Above: When he isn't in the classroom expounding the mysteries of farming, you'll find Mr. Jack McHargue roaming the great outdoors. A native of Payette, Idaho, and an instructor of vocational agriculture, Mr. McHar- gue enjoys hunting and fishing in his off-duty hours. Vocational education Right: Amidst the humming of a lathe and the buzzing of a power saw, you'll find our industrious shop teacher, Mr. Bill McDonald. A native of sunny Florida, Mr. McDonald now spends his leisure time hunting and fishing. A Sandpoint High School alumni and former Homecoming Queen, Mrs. Dana Curtis, now spends her time teaching hopeful young ladies the joys of domestication and the duties involved in managing a home. Her spare time is spent sewing, reading, and scuba diving. Another promoter of domestic sciences is Mrs. Carol Pietsch, home economics instructor. A native of Sand- point and local budding artist, Mrs. Pietsch spends her leisure time painting masterpieces. 15 math teacheRs If, and only if we know, Mr. Phil Deboard our algebra teacher was born in Pendleton and we know Pendleton is in Oregon, then this implies that Mr. Phil Deboard was bom in Pendleton, Oregon. 16 Born in the planes of Wyoming, Miss Eva Mae Whitehead holds the key for, and under- standing of geometry. Keeping things peppy in school spirit is one of the jobs tackled by Mrs. Joy Ann O’Donnell, who was born in Spokane, Washington. She teaches English and is advisor of Pep Club. The show always goes on in Miss Florine Dooley's English classes. Her great talent for drama is expressed in her ad- visorship of Mime and Masque. She was born in Welsh, West Virginia. enqLish and Library Top: Beowulf and Benson is the name of the game in Senior English. Mr. Ragnar Benson was born in Ambrose, North Dakota. Middle: Folklore and Legend are another aspect of English taught by Mrs. Dorthy Ellenbecker. She was born in South Haven, Michigan. Bottom: Miss Spitzer our shh, librar- ian was born in Grand Junction, Colorado. 17 Social Sciences Mr. Smith is one person who can tell you what happened when, where and why any place in the world. Originally from Minot, N.D., Mr. Smith teaches world history and is boys' counselor. To understand sociology, one must know about govern- ment, and what is U. S. government without an understanding of sociology? Mr. Terry Iverson from Coeur d'Alene, understands both and teaches them well. Coming from the Couer d'Alene area is our new U. S. History and U. S. Government teach- er, Mr. Marker, who looks upon the scholastic achievements of his students with the philosophy of grin and bear it. As Mr. Hunt's basketball team struggles for that one extra point, so do his U. S. History students. But Mr. Hunt, originally from Baker, Oregon, shows how to overcome these struggles and win. 18 Is wrestling biological or does biology cause stu- dents to wrestle ? Ask Mr. Chuck Schoonover who is a biology teacher and a great wrestling coach. Most people think a tripod is a three-legged animal. But all girls know that it is just an unusual stunt they learned from Mrs. Pat Smith, girls' PE and track teacher from Velva, North Dakota. Physical Education Office and Study Hall Mr. Ken Beaudoin's job is: teaching his P.E. students how to become great athletes, and his football team how to excel. Mrs. McCormick, an avid skier from Ketchum, Idaho, keeps noisy kids quiet in study hall. Mrs. McCandless, our school secretary whose sideline is raising Arabian horses, keeps things straight in the office; Mrs. Tilberg, new at our school, assists her. 19 The institutions of learning are filled with vast sorts of knowledge - Renee Savage To smile or not to smile is never a question for Miss Marianne Brown. A native of Sandpoint, she teaches sophomore English and is adviser of Monticola and drill team. Abbie and Ann Landers of SHS. La voila Miss Ellen Rogerson teach- ing the romantic French and Spanish languages. A native of Sun Valley she is also adviser of ski club. Our spy with the code is shorthand teacher, Mrs. Imogene Davis. Bom in Pocatello, Idaho she is adviser of Business Club. A new program off to a good start, multi-occupations, is headed by Mr. James Stebbins from South Dakota. A A soft voice can often mislead you as proved by the flying fingers of Mrs. Pat Benson. From Oseola, Wisconsin, she also teaches bookkeeping and is advisor of Lehono. Our outstanding musi- cian from Elk River, Idaho, is none other than that talented lady, Mrs. Marion Ruyle. She also teaches Latin and English. A brush here, a brush there is a tech- nique taught by Mr. LeRoy Anderson bom in Troy, Idaho. A superior musician From the far north is our own snow from Superior, Wisconsin bunny, Mr. Bob Hamilton. His wide is Mr. Russ Whalen, band lists of subjects include, journalism, and choir director, photography and advertising. Type, type as fast as you can; you can’t catch Mr. Holt for he’s a fast man. Bom in Salem, Oregon, Mr. Holt also teaches bookkeeping. Student Council Student Council members are, first row: Steve Hepperle, Sue Osborne, Dan Lyons, Julie McCormick, Brad Palmen, Jerry Jones. Members in- cluded: Jim Carlson, Mike Irving, John Evans, Matt Jones, Doug Jones, LaVar Shreffler, Holly Pope, Alan Lee, Mrs. Ellen Hall, advisor; Rick Largent, Mr. Ray Miller, bus driver and chaperone; Barry Crandell, Doug Madsen, Sonja Olsen, Dan Burt, Dan Farmin, Patty Kotschevar, Connie Madsen, Holly Whittaker, Mike Miller, Mr. Jim Hibbard, chaperone; Mike Leckner, Patricia Davis, Chester Schilling, Bob Nelson, Mrs. McCormick, advisor; Jim Parsons, Gary Miller, Rob Kincaid, Lynn Major, Brian McConnaughey, and Linda Murray, photographer. 99 melodic musicians of s.H.s. Again we have our hard-working orchestra students pushing to get ready for the next concert. They are all eager to develop their musical abilities and also join in on the many experiences orchestra offers. Along with performing their regular duties, the band, directed by Mr. Russell Whalen, produced a new sound around the halls of S.H.S. It was the seven member pep band which livened up the pep assemblies as well as the many basketball games and wrestling matches. The musicians also presented their usual concerts and entered their annual spring contests. Mrs. Marian Ruyle, director of the orchestra, was a runner up for the Idaho State teacher of the year. Both she and Mr. Whalen put many long hours of hard work in making our music department a suc- cess. The orchestra has junior high students in it also. These students work just as hard to make the orchestra a proud group. The band not only plays at concerts, but also at pep assemblies, games, and in parades. Thus S.H.S. certainly has reason to be proud of its fine melodic musicians. 101 The SHS choir, under the direction of Mr. Russ Whalen, provides a variety of songs for the young and old alike. Three journalism students received awards at the annual University of Idaho journalism conference at Moscow. Peggy Kellogg, Cedar Post editor, proudly ac- cepted the plaque for the state’s top news- paper, while Eddie Sue Judy wrote her way to first place in feature writing. Sophomore Jim Borden was a second place winner in the stale sportswriting competi- tion. Explaining their responsibility to freedom enabled Renee Savage and Chris Pietsch to win first and second in the county's Voice of Democracy contest. Hence later learned that she had won third in district competition. Her smarts on the National Merit Test resulted in Kathy Grorud being named a commended student in the annual merit competition. Sandpoint High's Homemaker of Tomorrow is Peggy Kellogg. She received the highest score on the Betty Crocker test, which this year was open to the male gender. :---- Sandpoint High School Mime Masque presented, in November, the Thornton Wilder play OUR TOWN. Although the play called for little or no background scenery, the fine acting performances made the play a success. The cast of OUR TOWN was Loren Sommerfeld, Cynthia Calkins, David Jones, Doug Jones, Jeannie Davis, Allison Grorud, Kent Compton, Shelma Baire, Chris Pietsch, Carol Mahler, Steve Gill, Ann Finney, Ron McCormick, Arleta Kyte, Brian Sawyer, Norma Riffle, Shirley Roos. Ill And when the snows set in, we wondered what the long winter ahead would bring us. Starting the season was Enrichment Day, a day when we could ex- pand our talents and knowledge in anything from playing chess to the basics of baking. As the winter wore on, students in the ski program made their weekly trek to Schweitzer for a fun filled afternoon on the slopes. (Some have a feeling, though, that twice the time was spent getting their ski equipment on and off as was spent skiing.) Christmas came at last, bringing with it socks full of unknown treasures for all the athletes, (with a little help from the Pep Club, of course). And there were the times when we banded together for a common cause—like for the snow dance and for the flu season when no matter how hard we tried, school wasn't closed. But the best thing that was formed during the winter was the Pep Band. 112 113 The old familiar saying, Spring has sprung holds true for SHS students. Just as new lives are born in spring, new ideas are born by events such as Career Day. Career-oriented author- ities enlightened the minds of scholars about the military services, teaching and scholarships. Pre-registration was conducted by Mrs. Sodorff and Mr. Smith for next 3'ear's sophomores and juniors. Height, length, and width were discussed in senior English classes as seniors were measured for caps and gowns. Creamy faces decorated the halls of SHS as the first pie eating contest in years took place. Sponsored by the Ponderettes, the indescribably deli- cious faces included Dave Jones, Lynn Major, Steve (Flash) Linder, and Coaches and teachers. 115 1 could Run till l have no wind jump at a spoken worO push till my chest Begins to CRack and expect my thanks in cheeRS. Keeping the students on their toes were the faculty men's and women's teams. The Boneheads and the Hotshots took first place in boys' and girls' volleyball, respectively. In the mixed tournament the combined fac- ulty team grabbed top honors. Dan Barmin was a double winner in the tabic tennis competition.
