' The second week of school finds the majority of sophomores, juniors, and seniors participating in the tradition of saying HELLO . Dan Batch, a senior who is great looking in silk (and a wizard at cleaning floors) says HI, while five junior girls show a popular reaction toward bedtime. Debbie Forgey seems impatient for a light while next door a timid Jody Hiatt tries to hide from somebody! The pile-up of seniors consist of Lynn Snedden, Dan Young, and Sheri Williams AND friend. The center picture shows Terry Johnson, Frank Lyons, Leslie Verdahl, and Mike Hook trying to act a little concerned about pollution. Seniors, Juniors, And Even Sophs Say Howdy Showing obvious displeasure in the picture (upper right) is Ann Knoblich with Roberta Welker as the winner of the stuffed tiger. In the lower left, Sarah Hedlund tries out for the role of Marilyn Monroe, while Debbie Hiatt hugs her security teddy bear and dreams of bigger and better things ! Scott and Corrine win the title of cutest couple of the year and Debbie Mikesell with Nita Jacobson prove they1 re young at heart. 8 Beauty Is the Heart Enflamed; And the Soul Enchanted —Kahlil Gibran xm % n '1 i ■niH iViWiWiViWlNK iVmrnmmHVm IHf §iii ililitii llii i;iifi Wmm-m iWMV.. will Empty and Dark, Shall I Raise My Lantern —Kahlil Gibran Smiling Richard Sodorff, our beloved principal is found relaxing in the office. If you need an excuse, our new vice- principal Mr. Richard Ostrom is the man to see. Our new superintendent, Dr. Wayne E. Likens, offers advice and suggestions to Student Council; further establishing his idea of students, faculty, and parents working together for the betterment of the school. The element of surprise exists in all of Miss Marianne Brown's English and Monticola classes. At the moment, however, most of it's in her face. Latin, English, and Orchestra are heavy subjects, and teaching them with the greatest of ease is Mrs. Marian Ruyle. Mr. Bob Hamilton, journalism and creative writing teacher, is caught creating. Tickling the ole ivories, Mr. Russell Whalen, band and choir director, is content. Keeping English alive is Mrs. Joy O'Donnell's task and she proves successful every year. 13 Mr. Jack McHargue, the Vo-Ag teacher, is great at keeping things down on the farm. Mrs. Davis and student teacher, Mrs. Sauer, collaborate on teaching business. Typing and Bookkeeping I are easy when lovable Mr. Bay Holt is in command. The recipe queen of SHS is Mrs. Carol Pietsch who astonishes her home economics classes with her ability. Conferring with secretary Vicki Hruza, Mr. Bill McDonald, shop teacher solves a tough mechanical problem. Typing is something Mrs. Pat Benson does well, but teaching it is one thing she does even better. 14 Coach Ken Beaudoin, who keeps things hot on the football field is recorded for posterity. A cheery smile and a light heart are qualities possessed in abundance by Mrs. Pat Smith, the girls physical education instructor. Drinking the stuff great wrestlers are made of is Coach Chuck Schoonover, the idol of the Bulldog matmen. To type a letter requires concentration and ability. Both are shown by Miss Bonnie Spitzer, our librarian. Halt, Who goes there? says Mrs. May McCormick our study hall monitor. 15 Another frog bites the dust under the watchful eyes of Mr. Tom Dryden, biology teacher. Miss Whitehead paves the way for a better under- standing of algebra. Double, Double, Boil and Bubble, is the way to get an A in chemistry. Taught, of course, by Mr. William Straley. I Senior math and physics, although never easy are easier to bear if Mr. Dave Parker is explaining them to you. Laughing along with the rest is Mr. Don Albertson, biology teacher. Playing the numbers game and winning is Mr. Phil Deboard, the Algebra II instructor. 16 War stories, hunting tales, and politics make up a good government class; and teaching it is Mr. Merle Parsley. Mr. Terry Iverson seems to have noticed an imperfection in his left hand while dealing with the intricacies of government and history. The quality of mercy is not strained, and apparently neither is Mr. Curtis's mouth. He teaches English and government. Shown concentrating intently is Mr. Ron Hunt our new basketball coach and U. S. History teacher. 17 Above, proving that a soft voice can accomplish big things is Mrs. Curtis, English teacher. In the meantime, grinning gleefully Mr. Ragnar Benson, right, senior English teacher, relates the fantastic feats of Beowulf. While, the un- sinkable Miss Fidrine Dooley, below, checks out her English classes for another year. —1 1 1 t J Above, Mr. Leroy Anderson poses artfully in his Art class and produces a picture that is a work of art. While below it just goes to prove that the hand is quicker than the eyes. So says Mr. Ron Anderson, Spanish and French teacher. 18 Mrs. Claire Sodorff divides her time and talent between the psychology classroom and the challenging job of girls1 counselor. A brief moment of relaxation is rare in the life of our school secretary Mrs. McCandless, but she makes the most of it by catching up on the news. It's one big surprise after another with Mr. Dwright Smith around. His list of accomplishments include World History teacher, boys' counselor, and a general pest. Mrs. Lola Elliot, below, is the new part-time secretary in the office and is always available to take over full- time when needed. 19 AND CUSTODIANS: MR. DELCOMTE MR. DAWSON AND MR. BENNETT A bright happy smile always covers up the amount of work an office girl doesn’t do. 1st Row: Mary Evans, Donna Carter, Kristi Chronic. 2nd Row: Carrie Anderson, Sherri Williams, Bev Green, Diane Welter, Marie Delamarter. 3rd Row: Dorene Stutzke, Kay Martin, Kris Kotschevar, Annette LaFever. 4th Row: Debbie Lee, Daralyn Tollbom, Linda Mitchell, Christy Whittaker, Terry Woodland, Gail Hawkins, Polly Hart. STUDENT HELP We the library assistants pledge allegiance to the SHS library until we either graduate or get kicked out. L to R: Miss Spitzer, Holly Selle, Karen Clearmont, Barbara Lagrou, Judy Davis, Diane Gunter, Judy Schwintek. Too many cooks spoil the broth, but since broth is never served in the cafeteria don't worry about the abundance of skilled help. Up front we have Mrs. Rojan, Susan Hurlburt, Maureen Blayne, Kathy Page, Leanne Remsburg, and Marge McClure. Standing in the back are Jo Schultz and Marta Ayers. 21 For Thought Is The Bird Of Space, That In The Cage Of Words, May Indeed Unfold His Wings But Cannot Fly— —Kahlil Gibran Democracy doesnft work; it isnft supposed to work; we are supposed to work it. The students also experimented with a Student Forum in place of Student Council for the third quarter. According to Dan Lund, Student Body President,-the student forum was initiated on the basis of equality for all, the door was always open to participation, and all interested students were urged to attend. 24 At the right, the Activities committee members are from L to R: Tic Davis, Dan Lund, Miss Whitehead, Peggy Holbert and Sherri Williams. Delegates: Marc Lyons, Sue Hanson, Dan Lund, Kris Kotschevar, Frank Lyons, and Kristin Grorud. Last spring when the Sandpoint Delegates arrived in Boise, their duties started early. Over eighty students from all three classes had the opportunity to learn how to ski. Each Monday noon for six weeks two busloads of brave new skiers departed for the slopes of Schweitzer Basin. Upon their arrival they separated into smaller groups which received instruction from both Schweitzer personnel and high school ski instructors-----and then they were turned loose to survive the spills, the entanglements, and the awkward slides down the hill. They had to endure the obstacles that every budding young skier must. The snow-plowers survived without too many problems; unfortunately, not all the instructors were so lucky... and a good time was had by all! The Ponderette year began in June with early morning practices at the beach for the Fourth of July Parade. Under the leadership of captain Jacque Reader, co-captain Lynn Balch, and advisor Marianne Brown the Ponderettes helped keep spirit alive during football season by providing colorful halftime entertainment. They played a major role in the Football Festival by staging a powder puff football game. Basketball season meant many long hours of both morning and evening practices— but the work paid off with such successes as Gypsies, Tramps and Thieves” and Sweet Georgia Brown. A highlight of the Ponderette year was a spectacular black light drill which sparked many favorable comments. Other Ponderette activities included the selling of cakes, producing the annual Variety Show, and marching in the Spokane Lilac Festival Parade.
