This year was the first time the Sandoval Blackhawk Band won three spectacular first place trophies at St. Elmo, alem, and Vandalia. They also marched in Centralia and Sandoval as the years before. The pep band played at all the home games while the flag girls performed for the Blackhawk fans. This year seven members of the band went to the Solo and Ensemble Contest on March 7. A quartet consisting f Danny DeKalb, Margarite Lammers, Kenny Wood, and Michelle Grasher received a first. A trio consisting of uke Hofstetter, Danny KeKalb, and Tony Parker received a second. Michelle Grasher and Keith Resch made up a rumpet duet and won first place. Luke Hofstetter took a solo and won first place. Keith Resch also took a solo and on a third. On April 11 the full band went to Freeburg for their last contest of the year and won a first. They held a Christmas concert on December 17. On May 4, 1981, they attended the Tri-Country Festival in atoka, lllinois. At that Festival all of the area school bands combined and played that day. They performed that ight for the community. To end up the concert season they held a spring concert in May. The band accompanied the graduates as they walked up the aisle and played for the entertainment of the elatix and friends. The band raised money by selling popcorn and fruit, which was successful. The money went toward their trip to ix Flags and for new uniforms. JOURNALISM This year the Journalism class was a large, cooperative, active class. There were thirteen seniors and ten juniors. At the first of the year, the students were engaged in selling ads to support our annual. Each month two students were editors of the monthly school newspaper. Everyone took part in creating the '81 Annual.
