Scmdouai, '7ZZ6naw do-Saidofz: lm Wimzm 1 WRX We, the Seniors of '81, are proud to dedicate our annual, the 1981 Blackhawk, to Mrs. Dolores Joyce. During the twenty years she has been here, she has taught drama, English, and psychology. We have en- joyed her teaching us through our high school years. Besides teaching, she has directed fifty one-act plays and sixteen class plays. We consider it an honor to be the last cast directed by her. We hope she enjoys her retirement, but she will be missed by many students and faculty. We were lucky to have her as a teacher before she retired. As we look back upon our memories of S.H.S., we are thankful for her help and concern that she has given to each one of us. Q To you, Mrs. Dolores Joyce, we would like to dedicate our yearbook with deepest admiration and gratitude. JOURNALISM This year the Journalism class was a large, cooperative, active class. There were thirteen seniors and ten juniors. At the first of the year, the students were engaged in selling ads to support our annual. Each month two students were editors of the monthly school newspaper. Everyone took part in creating the '81 Annual. This year was the first time the Sandoval Blackhawk Band won three spectacular first place trophies at St. Elmo, alem, and Vandalia. They also marched in Centralia and Sandoval as the years before. The pep band played at all the home games while the flag girls performed for the Blackhawk fans. This year seven members of the band went to the Solo and Ensemble Contest on March 7. A quartet consisting f Danny DeKalb, Margarite Lammers, Kenny Wood, and Michelle Grasher received a first. A trio consisting of uke Hofstetter, Danny KeKalb, and Tony Parker received a second. Michelle Grasher and Keith Resch made up a rumpet duet and won first place. Luke Hofstetter took a solo and won first place. Keith Resch also took a solo and on a third. On April 11 the full band went to Freeburg for their last contest of the year and won a first. They held a Christmas concert on December 17. On May 4, 1981, they attended the Tri-Country Festival in atoka, lllinois. At that Festival all of the area school bands combined and played that day. They performed that ight for the community. To end up the concert season they held a spring concert in May. The band accompanied the graduates as they walked up the aisle and played for the entertainment of the elatix and friends. The band raised money by selling popcorn and fruit, which was successful. The money went toward their trip to ix Flags and for new uniforms. T h e S a n d o v a I Blackhawks ended a great year of basketball by combining an 18-6 record at the varsity level and a 17-1 record in the JV level. The Blackhawks also won the conference ti- tle for the first time since the 1960-61 season. The JV won the conference for the fourth year in a row. There were a few records broken this year as senior David Finney pushed aside the old scoring record held by Joe Flamsey who graduated in 1961 and who is now the head coach at Milliken University in Decatur. The old record of 1626 points was topped by 1 Finney with 1704. Another record which was broken was the game scoring record. It -- - stood at 113 points un- til the Hawks scored . 119 in the game against Witt. He has seen and learned much during his visit by being one of us rather than just a tourist. Here is his message to the students of Sandoval High School. l'd like to thank you for what you did to me. l've been here unfortunately a too short time to know every one of you but I had a lot of fun with those I had luck to go with. I'd like to put the traveling seed in you people because I came over here and I go back with a lot of things I learned here, like other values, another way of life, or thinking. That is an experience everybody should do once in their life. By that way, l've learned how to appreciate my country, how to love my family iIt's no big deal to leave them, I said when I left, but home is homell, I can tell you that right now!! I had hard times as much as fun times but it always brought something positive to me. I found a bit more of myself. If you come over some day, what I wish every one of you guys could do, you know where to find me. So drop by any time. You'll be more than welcome. Travel. Meet people. Discover other areas in the world, other ways of life. We all are under the same sun. So please, Go Away!
