Showing vast improvement over the first grid squad, the '59 Matadors compiled a 5-5 seasonal record and a 3-3 record in 1AA Conference, Western Division. This ac- counting was good enough to earn Sandia a tie for first with Highland High in the city grid standings. Football brought many honors to Matadorland this season, while the Sandians were the seventh-ranked team in the state. Sandia had the distinction of having Several players get state and city-wide football honors. Leroy Lane made the AP All-State team at guard, and Mo Barreras had the distinction of being the first sophomore in a decade to be named to The Tribune's first-string mythical All- City team. Garnering second team honors for Sandia were seniors Leroy Lane, Leo Gallegos, Doug Westphall and junior Steve Byrd while jack McMurrough, Joe Long, Louis Price and Orvey Hampton received honorable men- tion. Leo Gallegos and Doug Westphall were selected by members of the New Mexico Coaches Association to play in the annual North-South All-Star game. Although losing the season's opener, Sept. 4, to Artesia 26-0, the Matadors were competing in IAA Conference for the first time. Running true to form in the second seasonal outing two weeks later, the Matadors over- whelmed St. Mary's Cougars 35-13. The next game found the Sandians in Trinidad, Colo., I38 where the locals were beaten 20-14 via a last minute Miner touchdown. Undaunted by this, the Matadors humil- iated Gallup 47-7 before a home crowd, Oct. 3. Traveling to the home of the Bulldogs, Las Cruces, the local gridders lost a heart-breaker, 7-0, to the team which later won the state football championship. This score represented the lowest number of points the Bull- dogs were held to all season. Returning home Oct. 17 to play a strong Highland eleven, the Matadors fell to the Hornets' sting, 26-7. Friday, Oct. 30, found the Matadors playing the Valley Vikings on a cold, muddy field. Unhindered by the mud and the fact that they were rated underdogs, the Matador machine rolled to a 21-6 victory. Sandia continued its winning ways in the next contest, defeating Albuquerque High 28-7. Santa Fe's Demons proved to be no match for Charlton's chargers also, as they fell before the mighty Matadors, getting shut out 23-0, running the Matador victory streak to three games. Unfortunately, this ended the following week-end when the Matadors played Farmington in a Homecoming game, Nov. 20. The first haltf venom of the Scorpions proved too much as the Matadors found themselves on the short end of a 27-20 score, a heart-breaking end for a Home- coming game and the last outing of the Matador grid season.
