Steve Grant Frank Harwi Rocky Rahn Kenny Campbell David Funderburg Coach Don Torgerson's Sandia basketball team, first in the school's history, made an impressive '58- 59 showing by placing eighth in the 12-team District 1A league, although the Matadors' overall record was a dismal one. The team, laden with sophomores and juniors, wound up with a 4-6 district record to take eighth place in the regular season conference race. For the entire campaign Sandia's record was 7-18, a good first-year performance. The seven Matador victories were 56-50 over St. Mary, 61-50 over Rio Grande, 74-66 over Los Lunas, 52-35 over Menaul, 70-36 over St. Catherine's of Santa Fe, 59-54 over Aztec and 54-52 over Bernalillo. At season's end Coach Torgerson's starting line- up was composed of three iuniors and two sophomor- es, indicating that better things are ahead next sea- son. M ATADOR WRESTLING MATADORS OPPONENTS 53 Rio Grande 5 24 Boy's Ranch 18 22 Los Alamos 21 20 Aztec 24 30 Valley 21 17 Blind School 16 2 1 AHS 2 1 2 1 HHS 20 49 Rio Grande 5 51 Las Cruces 5 12 HHS 24 34 Los Alamos 20 Sandia's Matador wrestlers made a gallant bid for the state cham- pionship in their first year of competition, but yielded to Albu- querque High's powerful Bulldogs and finished second in the state meet at the University of New Mexico's johnson Gym. Coach Clem Charlton's Matadors rolled up 95 points for the run- nerup spot, while champion Albuquerque High had 109. Sandia won three individual state championships: Tom Hannon copping the state 123-pound title, Vern Martinez winning the 130- pound crown, and Robert Ruiz emerging with top honors in the 141-pound class. Additionally, the Sandia matmen won four second places. Charles Cloyes was 98-pound runnerupg Tom Rondeau, 106-pound runner- up, Arnold Ventura, 168--pound runnerup, and Gary Tate, 178- pound runnerup. For the regular seasoon the Matadors had a 19-2-1 record, losing only to Highland and Aztec :md tying Albuquerque High. Both losses were compensated for when Sandia finished ahead of both Highland and Aztec in the state meet.
