It is our wish that, through the design and originality of the cover and varying sections of this book, we may bring about an awareness of the individuals and cultures around the world and of those that exist within our own doors. For the graduates, we hope to provide an everlasting memory of their friends and activities; for those who will remain, we hope to show the way towards new goals and experiences that they have yet to discover. “To be nobody-but-myself — in a world which is doing its best, night and day, to make you everybody else — means to fight the hardest battle which any human being can fight, and never stop fighting. ” E. We won 23 games and lost only 8, none of the losses being home games. The overall offensive average was 90 points per game. The Spartans won second place in the North Carolina Community College Conference with a 10:2 record. We placed three players on the all N.C.C.C.C. team: Marcus Rivens and Monty Beeson, co-captains, and also Floyd Wilson. This season was a success because of team effort. There was a total of eight players contributing in every game. Our play was typified by a strong, well-balanced offense, with five players usually contributing double figure scoring. This past fall was the pioneer season for the Spartans in soccer. Soccer ws not new to many people but to others it was a strange venture. Some fine performances were turned in by Dan Biggs, Tim Roschy, Ray Burton and Sam Williams. The Spartans ' record was 0-6, but competition was tough and it won’t be long before the victory signs are given for our fine soccer team. The first year always being the toughest, we ' re looking forward to the fall. Track Front row: Rick Raynor, Boh Geren. Back row Mr West, Advisor: Harry Jones. Paul James. Not pictured: Robert West, Chuck Holloway. Joe Maples, Virgil Street. Sam Williams. This spring is also our pioneer season in track and field. We are the proud owner of a new grosstex track and it is one of the best in the state of North Carolina. The hopeful prospect for the spring looks like Paul James in the 440 intermediate hurdles and the mile. Another hopeful is Bob Geren in the discus event. Chuck Holloway and Sam Williams handle the middle and tong distance events. Harry Jones, Rick Raynor, and Robert West lead our sprints. Joe Maples handles the pole vaulting. 21 t tx Front row: Boris DeNissoff Beth Coppedge Duck Winstead Back Row: Johnny Tillman Boh Lee Chris Benedict Coach , John Moore Not pictured: ' Joe Waldo Tommy Halyburton Tennis March 14 — CM A — Home March 18 Lenoir Co. — Community College March 19 Southwood Jr. College March 21 Isothermal Community College April 1 Southwood Jr. College April 11 Isothermal April 15 — Lenoir Co. — Community College April 18 - CMA A way A way Home Home Away Home A way 22 Baseball Fmm row - Bernie Poole. On Friday night, a bonfire was held and the cheerleaders led the students in a Pep Rally. The Veterans Club sponsored a casual dance Friday night, featuring A l and the Barefacts. The Saturday celebrations got off to a swinging start as students led a cavalcade through town to display spirits and “show off ' the candidates for Homecoming Queen. Later, on Saturday night, the Sandhills Spartans dribbled their way to victory against Cape Fear. After the game, the students made way to the National Guard Armory for a dance featuring The Inmen Ltd. and The Robinson Brothers. During the half-time break, the 1969 Homecoming Queen, Diane Ballard, was crowned by Suzan Reaves, 1968 Queen. Homecoming Queen. Diane Ballard escorted bv Richard Stone. I want to say thanks to my staff for sticking with the job until the end. Liz, Elizabeth, Nancy, David, Phil — Thanks so much for all the time that you devoted to making this book what it is. Thanks also to David, Joel, Joye, Mr. McMillan, Mr. Tysinger, and Mr. Humphrey who, although not on the yearbook staff, spent quite a few hours working with us. And to anyone else who helped in anyway, thank you for your time and interest. THE END!!! Shirli 120 IF Nl ' l ■ h ’■ ¥ MjMt T aaryZffMSM I m ■ ' ’VSAiiwf J IQSp drift H U jdL M 1 .
