They are be- coming more educated, more actively in- volved in issues they believe in, and less in- hibited about saying what they believe. Our school has seen many changes take place over the past year, and it seems only right that the students be allowed to voice their opinions on the issues. Throughout this book you will be able to share the opi- nions of others and weigh them with your own. In keeping with this idea, our goal was to get at least one quote from each student, but this is almost impossible. The opinions expressed in this book are not necessarily those of the Administration or the Lako- nikos Staff. ead oa FT ae Wa A Message To The Students. . . MOS OOO (iii POE | see only two advantages in hav- ing quotes in the yearbook. The first is that it is different and it will give the yearbook a different aspect. The second advantage is that maybe a few more people will speak out on what they feel about certain things such as race relations and teaching practices. This is definitely a good way in which we, the student s, can voice our opinions. (Unknown) The idea of putting quotes in the yearbook is pretty good considering Sanderson hasn't ever done this. It expresses how people really are or how they think. Sanderson needs many changes in several areas in or- der to get the student body inte- rested in what they have. (Junior boy) They’re interesting but they are a real pain to type. (The typist) i OPENING OF SCHOOL Summertime... . and the Living Was Easy The first day—lost! Going up one hall and down the other. Walking into the wrong homeroom and sit- ting down with a confident smile. Sizing up the people stuck in there with you. Embarrassment when your name’s not on the attendance. Wasting five minutes trying to find the office so they can look up your homeroom on the IBM sheets. Just a bunch of names. . . Slipping on the ledge from the bathrooms to the halls and hoping a Senior didn’t see you. Surprised at what the tea- cher expects from you. . . Sighs of reliet-at the)2330 bell’ (Kath Ste- phens) Sophomores didn’t get put-down as much as | thought they would. Occasionally though, little words of insult are thrown at us seemingly to put us in our place. | wasn’t hit hard at all. Maybe dating a Senior had something to do with it. (Lee Haig- ler) | felt like | was re-entering seventh grade. (Sophomore girl) Until | got my notice to teach here this summer, | didn’t even know where Sanderson was. (Mr. Howell) My first day at Sanderson was great. | guess it was the excitement of being in a new school. But throughout the next week | realized how really lost in this place | was . alone, except for a handfull of people whom | hardly ever saw. | think it’s going to take a full year for this school to get things toge- ther and run smoothly. (Amy Hart) reeled ROS: 10 OPENING OF SCHOOL Friends, Forms and Frustrations The first few days of school were confused and hectic. Then everyth- ing settled down and got boring. (Two Sophomore girls) | think Sanderson is just fantastic, because being black and coming from an all black school, | thought it would be rather hard. But | get along just fine with them. After all, why not? Cause we all have the same blood. | like the air conditioners in the classrooms. Now | won't sweat my brains out trying to take a test. Now my brains will freeze. Sanderson and Junior High are two different extremes. In Junior High, we used to see who could dress up the nicest—here it’s the sloppiest. (Joe Hodge) STUDENT LIFE Spartans Settle Into the Routine Sanderson is a good school, but the work is terrible. We should get out of routine. The only reason | come to school is to see people. (Debbie Green) Sanderson High School is a very nice school, but | preferred Ligon High School. | have to come out of my way to come to this school. Sanderson is not my bag. (Dwight and Sheron) If you can force yourself to be- lieve school is endurable, it helps you to make it that way. (Chazz Fo- ret) | think school is very delightful. | enjoy it very much, but there are two problems | find in Sand- erson—That’s having to get up so early to ride the buses and cheering at the football games when no one is there. But other than that | love it. (Vanessa Chavis) At first | was a little scared of coming here, but now | really like it—especially algebra and German. (I’ve got great teachers for them!) HOMECOMING From Powderpuff Games to the Dance—lIt Was a Good Week Being a sophomore this was my first year of being involved in homecoming. | was a little disap- pointed that the cavalcade didn’t get to ride down Six Forks or away from the school because that always seemed to help boost school spirit and also get others interested. | thought the game was really fantastic! | noticed that both par- Kingmtlotsaweresiulles lt seems, though, that people should have as much spirit for other games instead of just for the homecoming game. There seemed to be very little ten- sion between the blacks and the whites—maybe this was because everyone wanted to win so we were all pulling together. Islovedesome,or theiloats: | didn’t realize there were so many creative people in Sanderson. (Me- lissa Storie) The powder puff football game really kicked off the festivities. | think it was a worthwhile effort for all the students. We had our share of problems, but it was a great step ahead. (Debbie Funk) Pretty girls in convertibles, sym- bols of the superficial world we live in—who Cares if education’s a one- way street to nowhere, just so long as you get invited to homecoming. (Sarah Goddin) PEP RALLIES The first pep rally was a real win- ner! The entire school was out on the football field at 8:00 in the mor- ning. Three-fourths of the students were still asleep—until they sat down on the cold, wet bleachers! There were so few people really yell- ing, it was hardly worthy of being called a pep rally. (Diane Mauney) Pep rallies are the greatest thing that has ever happened. To bring everyone together to yell for one unified cause is one step toward unifying the whole school. You have to start from the ground up in order to have a real _ together school. (C.A.) | detest this situation of parti- cipating in this pep rally. | thought Sanderson would have a_ big enough gym to seat everyone in the school. Certainly the other schools have enough room to seat eve- ryone. (Josiah Jones) It is hard to get your spirit out in a pep rally. It really comes out at the games. (Mary Beth Edwards) ee ee ‘Football is the “thang” espe- cially when only the team and the cheerleaders show up. (S. Stewart) | think the student body was more behind the basketball team. Although we didn’t have very many pep rallies for basketball, we had very good crowds. | think the rea- son for the increase in people was due to the fact that basketball is an indoor sport and the gym is heated. Those bleachers get awful cold on a winter's night. (Senior Girl) | think all the sports teams did a great job this season. Our football had a great season as well as our basketball team. The wrestling team also made a fine showing for SHS. | think the student body was behind all the teams 100%. They always seemed to be cheering the team on to victory. | didn’t hear one deroga- tory word about anyone on any of the teams. | think one of the rea- sons for our successful season was due to the great coaches that we have here. They deserve a lot of thanks for all the time and efforts they put in. This is the way things are done in school and throughout the country. Just because something is tradi- tional, doesn’t mean it is right; but there is a certain Way to change things such as assemblies. The Winter Festival assembly is a traditional event which has been held at Sanderson since the beginning. Gradually, through the years interest in it has been decreasing, and this year was no different. There is a way to change an event which is not liked by the majority of the students, but it must be kept in mind that:there are some students who like the assembly and worked very hard to make it a success. Their efforts must not go unreported. (continued next page) iti saline OPP The way in which this event was disturbed this year was very rude and dis- respectful to this group of persons. Now they are left with this memory the rest of their lives. To live with and to know and learn how insensitive people can be towards an event which they have tried to make so great. It’s too bad the audience didn’t match the performance! (Mrs. Alterman) A little more self control should have been used by some but on the whole it was a beautiful assembly. There were people who did their best to ruin it, and | hope by next year they will have either grown up or gra- duated. (Leigh Jones) The program itself was good and pre- sented well, but the behavior of the stu- dent body for certain ones was really embarassing and annoying especially in front of guests. | think the students could have shown a little more respect. and maturity. (Kim) There was such a difference in the two assemblies. Besides being shorter, the second assembly had a much rowdier audience. Most of the boys had never been in the situation of playing with the opposite race before and we just needed a little time to make the adjust- ments. We did lack the unity of the past Sanderson teams, but | feel we ended up more together as a team. | wasn’t really surprised we won the conference championship, but | was a little disappointed we didn’t go further. The high point of the season was without a doubt the Enloe game. The boys just decided before the game that they wanted to win and that’s what can happen when you really give an all out effort. | was really happy for the guys who won honors and scholarships and | want to wish all the boys good luck in the future. The 1971-72 Junior Varsity Football team became the first Sanderson team in any sport to go undefeated. These boys accomplished this feat because they were willing to pay the price. Personal glory was put aside for the good of the team. This was one of the finest group of young men | have had the pleasure to work with. They are winners! If the attitude and desire they displayed this year continues, Sanderson should have exceptional football years ahead. (Coach Lehning) Some of the coaches really didn’t seem to care. They never said anything encouraging. They need to change with the times, and treat people as individuals because everyone doesn’t think the same. (Junior player) 4l The excitement and tension of a tight game; the team- 42 BASKETBALL work, the crowd, the emotion that comes with winning I’m what you would call a sports fiend. The close- ness of the crowd, the teamwork in- volved, the quickness and alertness re- quired, the excitement and tension of a tight game, the coach right there direct- ing the team. Just like football, basket- ball requires every player to do his part. But who in the crowd ever sees the right guard block on the line? In basketball, every rebound, every shot, every block, every steal) every sassist is seen. The crowd knows what each player can do and does. The glory and appreciation of this makes basketball a sport in which fans are as involved as the team. That’s why | love basketball and always will. (R. G. Another reason is that we could learn so much more about how people feel about certain things in the school, and also what can be done about school problems. If we could have a meeting about once a month | think that would be really good. (L.H.) Lease, Tom Leonard, Larry Leonard, Mike Lesher, Pam Lewis, Jeff Lewis, Leah 137 Lichtner, Bill Lindley, Betsy Locke, Susan Long, Brenda Lott, Cathy Lowery, David Loyd, Susan Luciani, Giannina Lynch, Becky Lynch, Kenny Lynn, Amy Lynn, Teresa b Long live the sophomores! If we can possibly make it | 5 through this year, we’ve got it made. We try not to complain too much about the awful, broken-down, ridiculous buses we have to ride, only to be greeted at ‘ the school by criticism and hateful stares. But we know, eventually, we'll rise to a greater power! (Carol Hines) The Student Council should send out forms for stu- dents to comment on and ask questions about stuff and then have a meeting to answer them all honestly and openly about once a month. (A.S.) | think there should be some kind of tournament for the Junior Varsity teams. (M.B.) | think there should be pep rallies for the JV’s and let the Sophomores come—at the pep rallies now we and the team step back and watch. | think we should have more sophomore representa- tion on the executive council. It’s not fair that the president, vice president, secretary, etc. are all juniors and seniors. Sophomores have no représentation and no direct way to let their feelings be known. (B.T.) There’s so much homework and so many tests. And to think I’m just a poor little sophomore!
